It's good to hear that the project is FINALLY starting. It's not good to hear that the city is announcing this. The anti-business folks have already started putting up signs in the vicinity again and if you visit their website, it looks like they are planning on being obnoxious at the groundbreaking, as well as some sort of "legal" challenge. Not sure what they would have to go on, but after observing Wisconsin politics during the last year, I'm not sure that it matters.

While the "smokes for votes" and the other isolated incidents you reference are wrong and should be (and were) prosecuted, I feel extremely confident in the integrity of the vote in Wisconsin, Milwaukee County and South Milwaukee. Time and time again, investigators can find no evidence of widespread voter fraud, and I believe them. I have to. Of course, the rhetoric is to the contrary, as many, especially on the right, assume that voter fraud will happen each and every election (and, of course, only benefit Democrats). In that way, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Predict it will happen, and then when there is an isolated case or two, claim you were right, and the cycle continues. I just want to see proof it's actually happening on any wide scale before I buy it as reality.

Space is indeed limited in such a developed city as South Milwaukee, but there are properties available. One -- the CDA site on 11th and Madison, half a black from Caterpillar and home of the farmers' market -- is one. Other development opportunities -- those involving acquisition of vacant private property on Milwaukee Avenue -- would require more creativity, and cost. Still, growth is possible here ... albeit it easier in places like Oak Creek.
