Council Approves Another Tough, but Sensible, Labor Agreement with AFSCME

The City Council unanimously approved a new two-year labor agreement with AFSCME Local 883 at its meeting Wednesday night.

It’s a fair deal, the result of boths sides recognizing the tough economic and budget times. It is effective July 1 through June 30, 2012.

Like contracts recently approved with the police and firefighter unions, the AFSCME deal includes the following:

  • No increase in base salary and wage rates in 2010 and a 2 percent increase in 2011;
  • Increases in the employee contribution toward health insurance (for a family plan, it will be $120 for month effective January 1, 2011, and $130 effective January 1, 2012; it’s currently $110).
  • Increases in monthly dental insurance contributions in 2011 (from $10 to $20).

    Hats off to our AFSCME workers who are setting an admirable examble by taking sacrifices to keep our city running.

    Let’s hope the 5 SM School district unions are listening. We can’t keep spending money we don’t have.
