Tuesday Was a Great Day for a Bike Race!

Update: Here is a link to Journal Sentinel coverage of the race, and click here for some wonderful photos from Peleton-Pix.com.

From our great sponsors to all of our volunteers, a big thanks to everyone who made Tuesday’s Bucyrus International Cycling Classic possible.

It was a huge undertaking, but, boy, was it worth it. What a great day!

I am hoping this becomes a staple of Heritage Week for years to come. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate what makes South Milwaukee a great place to live … and to showcase our community to those who haven’t yet discovered us.

Were you there? Let me know what you think. Post a comment below. Also answer the new poll question on the right hand side of the main page.

  1. It was a great event! Thanks to all the community organizers and volunteers who stepped up! Erik, you’ve done a fantastic job and your efforts in helping get the word out through flyering, this blog, etc. Are fantastic. Thanks for leading by example and really helping to showcase how great our south side truly is.

Special thanks also to Bucyrus for sponsoring such an amazing event and for allowing a large number of their staff to volunteer. It’s doubling great to see a large business still support its local community financially as well as with the manpower.

    Two thumbs up from me.

Even though we had to park our cars somewhere during the day, the races were so much fun to watch. I live along the course route and this event brought out neighbors we have never met before. We all agreed that if it happens next year, we’re having a neighborhood cookout!

I also thought the course itself was very exciting with “hair pin” turns at the Grant Golf course and the bottom of Mill Road.

I hope Bucyrus sees this as a worthy event to sponsor and it comes back next year.

I never made it downtown and hope the vendors were happy. I would like to hear from the racers. Did they feel welcome? Did they like the course? and what could we do to improve the event.

Kudos to the organizers and volunteers on providing a quality event during such a busy busy week in South Milwaukee.

    • Thanks, Rocket Mom. Your reponse is exactly the type of reaction we are looking for from residents. To your points … we didn’t get the traffic we wanted to the vendor fair, but there are some things we learned that we can put into practice next year to change that. Riders I spoke with loved the course, and so did the ICC. The winner said the course was a “rollercoaster” with all of its ups and downs, lefts and rights. And Bucyrus, Wheaton Franciscan, the YMCA and other sponsores seemed really happy with how things went too — and they should be. It was a special night.

So glad the riders liked the course. The word-of-mouth will then take over and more riders will come.

Sorry to hear the Downtown vendors didn’t get the desired traffic. Tuesday nights are rough for people who like routine and for us working stiffs, the downtown “party” atmosphere can be a dilemma for folks who have to get up for work the next day.

I think the pros outweigh the cons on this one. Who can I write to at Bucyrus to thank them for sponsoring this event? (or should I just send a letter to the editor?)

    • I know Azteca was happy with their crowds, Muskie’s not so much. The bigger concern was with with the actual vendor fair on 8th Avenue, which we’ll address in 2011. And I’d write directly to CEO Tim Sullivan thanking them for their sponsorship. This wouldn’t have happened without his support.

One more thing – I would love to see photos posted on the web of this event – I saw SO many photographers there…

Next year, possibly a photography contest for a college scholarship could be added to the idea folder?

  5. Great idea Rocket Mom and great feedback! Thanks so much for sharing.

re: Milwaukee Ave restaurant business during the race – Outside Cafe dining would have definitely brought in business on race night. It’s all about watching the racers.

Maybe Muskies could offer a “night before” carb loading (spaghetti dinner) event – they do have two Halls.

Ex-CNI Photographer, Charles Auer, also covered the event with some spectacular shots featured on his website. (these are definitely PR worthy for future city publicity)
