This year, setting the trick-or-treat hours was easy.
Since Halloween falls on a Sunday this year, South Milwaukee trick-or-treating will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 31.
I continue would like to see trick-or-treating done at night in South Milwaukee, but I don’t see council support for this. What do you think? Post your comments below.

as an eighteen year-old, I’m in between being able to trick or treat, or not, but in the past, trick or treating at night is what really made it worthwhile. If it’s not at night, then it’s not fun; there’s no thrill; no glow sticks, no giggling with your friends, no fun halloween parties before going trick or treating in groups. no spooks or shadows to squeal at, and certainly not as much fun looking at costumes. Night time is what keeps it alive, along with going home to curl up by a warm fire and look through what you got. Not to mention, alot of people have better things to do during the day than sit and hand out candy, or even walk around while it looks dreary out. That isn’t fun at all.
The Blakewood area has successfully been running a night time trick-or-treat for roughly 10 years now and it has been a great success. The number of kids that go door to door is 10 times more than it is for a 2-4pm trick-or-treat and it is just a great experience whether you walk with a child or sit in your driveway with friends.
I think that trick or treating should be at night because it is fun. Alot of people go to Bay View so they can go at night. Also South Milwaukee should have trick or treating for three hours not two. Then the kids can go out longer.
I’m a mother of a 3 and 4 yr old. I remember trick or treating at night when I was young. I think it should be brought back. The problem is these days most parents are to lazy to take their kids out, so they want it during the day so they don’t have to be bothered. You can’t see all the decorations lite up during the day, and it would much more fun at night. It would be safe at nigght if the parents go along!
Thanks for the comments … and keep them coming! I agree with the points above, and I may push to make this a reality in 2011. Also, be sure to vote in the poll on the right-hand side of this page.
Growing up on the border of St Francis in Milwaukee, we had trick or treat at night. Than after the Racine incident (I believe I was 8 or 9yrs) they moved T or T to daytime hours.
I moved to Seattle to go to school and there, its always held on the 31st and it’s ALL day long. If it is a school day, than one can assume as soon as the kids get home, changed, you can expect your door to be busy! I loved it! My two children got to T or T for hours. They took a break for awhile and than we went back out when it was ‘night fall’ – made for a more spookier atmosphere and it was great fun for all!
My children are now too old to go, but even in the last years they were able to do so, we drove to Franklin so they could T or T at night.
We need to be able to change this – and perhaps with enough adults who sign on to supervise their streets for any signs of trouble, this could once again be a part of childhood that kids can look forward to, as well as look back upon.
I would love for my kiddos to experience trick or treat at night. Also I thought in the past it was 3 hours. 2 hours is extremely short compared to what other communities do.
I would ask if the council members who appose this have children? Please remember you’re representatives of the community and it appears so far everyone supports evening trick or treat and one whole community already does it on their own.
I definitely would agree with everyone here, trick-or-treating needs to happen at night. I am 22 and never really got to experience night time trick-or-treating, but wish I had. Its really quite boring to go during the day and the age of kids who go every year is younger and younger. The point of halloween in the past was to get scared and be scary, now its just a “who has the cutest costume” day. Lame.

I missed this post earlier, so I posted my main comment (about a community party rather that trick or treat) on the other one, but I thought I’d make a couple comments about a few things I read above.
1. I grew up in an area with block sizes very similar to where I live now. My block currently has about 20 houses (counting both sides). Growing up I knew about 75% of those people (enough to call them Mr./Mrs. SoAndSo and my parents would have known them better). So, I would trick or treat to those houses and maybe one additional block (with a 50% “know” rate. That’s a total of 25 houses. With 2 hours for trick or treating, that’s almost 5 minutes per house. We shouldn’t need 3-4 hours unless the purpose is just greed (dressing up as bankers?). No wonder parents have to get their kids candy X-rayed and/or check for “foreign objects”.
2. With respect to the first comment…18 yrs old is “between” trick or treating???? YIKES! I’m quit when I got into high school.
The site says trick or treating is the 31st from 2-4??? Really on a Monday? Maybe consider a 4-7PM slot…daylight for the little ones and darker for the older kids.
Judy: This is a post from 2010. Trick-or-treating this year is Sunday, Oct. 30, from 2 to 4. I wish it was Halloween evening every year, but that’s another story …
