Update: West Milwaukee’s new Walmart opens Wednesday, too.
Two and a half years after it was first proposed, the South Milwaukee Walmart opens Wednesday.
A few notes on the opening:
- The new store will be open 24 hours, joining the Franklin, Greenfield and Sturtevant stores, among several others in the region, in that regard.
- The store will include a Subway restaurant inside.
- It will also sell beer, wine and spirits, as the South Milwaukee City Council approved its liquor license earlier this month. Sales will occur between 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- The store will also have a pharmacy (hours: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m Monday through Friday, 9 to 7 on Saturday and 10 to 6 on Sunday), in addition to groceries and general merchandise.
- The store is also on Facebook.
Now, I know some readers of this blog will never shop at the store, for reasons made abundantly clear in the last 24 months. You have that right, and I understand your concerns. Some will shop there (including me, on occasion). You also have the right.
No matter where you stand, I hope we can all take a step back and see what the real-world impact of this store will, or won’t, be. Only then can we determine if this was the right decision for South Milwaukee or not.

That wonderful solution of all the South Milwaukee tax woes. Hope they hired somebody to comb the neighborhoods. I live 3 blocks away and already this morning I had to vear around a shopping cart at the end of the block, and then after waiting several minutes to get onto S Chicago, had to stop at both the red lights at Badger and then again College…. I’m sure it will only get better. Not! Any stats on how many police were on site yesterday?
And let’s not forget that their property taxes are going towards TIF and not police. That my friends is coming out of your pocket. That juice just got a little bit more expensive didn’t it. Penny wise and dollar foolish!!
Yep.. im sure we’ll get that bill with the taxes this year and beyond… is there a chance we’ll ever see a tax break? … probably not in our lifetime… meanwhile a hundred people are makin minimum. . Just enough to supplement their second and third jobs!! Life is good by the great lake filled with Walmartians littering our parkways and neighborhoods!
This isn’t Walmarts 1st store Erik! We have seen what it has done. And it ain’t good. Now if you need me to list all the negative I will be more than happy to. It’s all been said before. Now choosing to ignore all of that for a dollar off your juice it leaves me SMH! There are other alternatives to shopping at Walmart.
