Jursik And The 2010 Furloughs And Other Headlines

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has a story on the cost of the 2010 Milwaukee County furloughs — and the blame game going around after courts ruled the county must pay back furlough savings to employees.

Here is the story. From it:

So who is to blame?

Abelson points the finger at Walker and two County Board members who helped negotiate the deal – ex-Chairman Lee Holloway and Supervisor Patricia Jursik, who was chairwoman of the Personnel Committee.

“It really was a collaboration,” Abelson said.

Cullen Werwie, spokesman for Walker, said the governor had no comment. Holloway, who retired from politics earlier this year, could not be reached for comment on Friday.

Jursik called Abelson’s remarks “ridiculous.”

She said it was unfair to single out a few people. The full board and the county executive adopted the budget with the furloughs. She said many people disagreed on what the court would do. But county officials needed to act, she said, to eliminate the deficit.

“It was a tough budget,” Jursik said. “These were actions of the entire county.”

More On Black’s Firing And Other Headlines

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel spoke with South Shore Supervisor Pat Jursik about the firing Milwaukee County Parks Director on Monday. According to the story:

Supervisor Jursik, who is a lawyer, said she feared that Abele’s firing of Black exposed the county to potential damages. Jursik said Black likely has a good argument that her 2011 raise given to keep her in her county job created a contractual right to her job. If a judge or jury agreed, the county would be forced to argue the firing was justified for cause, Jursik said.
