Oak Creek’s Planning Priorities And Other Local Headlines Of Interest

Oak Creek reportedly has a pretty long to-do list when it comes to public works and other planning projects in coming years.

At the top of the list: developing the Delphi site and the city’s lakefront, as well as improving Drexel Avenue to make way for a new freeway interchange. Not so high on the list? Widening Pennsylvania/Nicholson Avenue south of Rawson.

That’s according to a story in Oak Creek Patch. From it:

As for Pennsylvania Avenue, the stretch from College to Rawson will still be expanded next year. Officials said that congestion south of Rawson is “not as pressing for the city as are the Drexel Interchange and Drexel Avenue reconstruction projects.”

Celebrating South Milwaukee-Oak Creek Interfaith And Other Local Headlines

Oak Creek Patch has a good news story about the role volunteer drivers play with South Milwaukee-Oak Creek Interfaith.

Check it out here. From it:

South Milwaukee-Oak Creek Interfaith Director Jennifer Rundell calls them the “bread-and-butter of the community.” The people in the passenger side of Maletta’s vehicle have an entire lifetime’s worth of stories. Many lived through the Great Depression, a World War, a moon landing and more. But they’re now left with nowhere else to turn – many of their friends are gone, and a lot of them don’t have family that live in the area.

Not only does Maletta and some 60 other Interfaith volunteers help older residents get from Point A to Point B, the relationships often extend far beyond the drive itself.

Many of them, simply needing someone to talk to, form a strong connection with volunteers, Maletta said.

“I have a motto – we should plant some trees we will never sit under,” she said. “If the nicest thing you can say at my funeral is that my house is spotless, I have not lived a good life. People are more important than things and you realize that (volunteering with Interfaith) and at the end of the day, you feel really good.”

A Downtown For Oak Creek And Other Headlines

Plans for a “town center” development at the former Delphi site in Oak Creek received mixed reviews at a public meeting on Monday.

That’s according to this story from Oak Creek Patch. From it:

The Delphi property, at 85 acres, would allow for several different uses.

According to the plan unveiled Monday, to the east of the City Hall and library would be retail along a “walkable Main Street.”

The type of retail would largely be determined by market conditions, but officials expect restaurants and small- to medium-sized shops to be a part of it. A space for a farmer’s market was also included.

To the west is housing; likely, some combination of condominiums and apartments. A large park and public greenspace is planned for the southwest part of the property.

All Aboard!? Honadel, “The Mine Train” And Other Local Headlines Of Interest

South Milwaukee Rep. Mark Honadel is helping lead the charge to get new mining legislation passed through the Assembly by the end of the year.

The bill would help speed development of an iron mine near Ashland.

Check out the story in the Ashland Current. From it:

Republicans in the State Assembly say they’ll push ahead with a rewrite of Wisconsin’s mining laws and could have something passed by the end of this year.

Ever since the State Senate set up a special committee to study and rewrite Wisconsin’s mining laws, many assumed that any mining bill would have to start there first. But South Milwaukee Republican Representative Mark Honadel says the Assembly won’t wait.

“I think the iron mine train starts today,” Honadel says.

The iron mine in question is being proposed for a stretch along Iron and Ashland Counties. It would be the largest in the state. The company proposing it thinks Wisconsin’s current mining laws are onerous. Honadel says they will be changed.

“Part of our agenda is to make the bill a little more friendly to anybody that wants to come here and mine but yet keep our air and water permits intact to protect our beautiful Wisconsin Northwoods,” Honadel says.

Postal Facility Update And Other Headlines

The U.S. postal facility planned across the street from South Milwaukee’s 4th District may not be a postal facility at all.

That’s according to this story from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. From it:

The Oak Creek Plan Commission, at its Tuesday night meeting, will consider a request to change the development plan to allow for creating an alternate project for the site, said Doug Seymour, community development director.

There are no specific alternatives yet, Seymour said. But it makes sense to begin planning for that possibility given the prospects for the original project, he said.

Seymour said city officials are working with Cobalt and the Postal Service “to try to get something going on that property.” The land, once used for farming, hasn’t been paying property taxes since it was sold to the Postal Service, Seymour said.

The agency hasn’t yet dropped its plans for the site, said Tim Ratliff, a Postal Service spokesman.

“We always like to keep our options open,” he said.

I’ll keep you posted on this story. In the meantime, check out these other local headlines:
