12 Days Of South Milwaukee Christmas: Studio 915

South Milwaukee’s only art gallery has plenty of Christmas gift options at all price points — and some truly remarkable pieces from a variety of local artists.

Original paintings, sculptures, ceramics, jewelry … Joe and Dawn Mader have something for every taste, making this a must-stop for those wanting to shop local this holiday season.

One suggestion: Consider an art class. The studio offers a variety of workshops throughout the year, including one coming up on Saturday on window painting.

Or how about an art party? Studio 915 hosts all types of special events and receptions, including birthday parties — something I will surely remember when my 5-year-old’s birthday rolls around.

Part of Studio 915’s mission statement is “to discover and reveal the ‘inner artist’ in every person.” Find yours at the gallery this holiday season.

12 Days Of South Milwaukee Christmas Shopping: Studio One Art Glass

Black Friday has passed. Cyber Monday is approaching.

How about making it a “South Milwaukee December”?

With that in mind, I’ll be posting a series of items encouraging people to shop locally this holiday season — focusing on a different local business for each post.

I start with Studio One Art Glass, a business near and dear to the Brooks house. Literally. If you’ve ever been to my home, you’ve probably noticed that almost every first-floor window has a beautiful stained glass piece hanging in it.

I buy one of these pieces, handcrafted by Kim and the crew at Studio One, each Christmas, and I encourage you to do the same. Their work is outstanding, and uniquely Studio One. It’s also available in all price points — from inexpensive candle holders to costly custom pieces. Imported items are also available, but I prefer the locally made pieces.

Check out the craftsmanship for yourself this holiday season … and tell them Erik sent you.

What’s For Sale: Wanna Buy A Gas Station?

Just noticed a “for sale” sign up on this property

I’ve long wondered why a gas station couldn’t work at 10th and Manitoba. It certainly has the traffic and visibility.

If you’ve got $400,000 to spend, here’s your chance.

Also, it looks like 14th Precinct is for sale, and DC Connection remains on the block.

Caterpillar’s Continued Gloomy Outlook

Caterpillar further reduced its 2012 forecasts and reiterated its concerns for global growth as it reported its third-quarter earnings on Tuesday.

Check out coverage from Reuters, the Wall Street Journal and Associated Press. From the Journal:

Last month, Caterpillar predicted revenue for the year would be about $2 billion lower than the midpoint of its July revenue range of between $68 billion and $70 billion. On Monday, it chopped an additional $1 billion from its revenue forecast and shaved its 2012 profit outlook, reinforcing a view of rapidly deteriorating end-market demand.

“As we’ve moved through the year, we’ve seen continued economic weakening and uncertainty,” Chairman and Chief Executive Doug Oberhelman said. “It’s definitely impacting our business with dealers intending to lower inventories and mining customers delaying some projects and reducing orders.”

Caterpillar has dialed down production rates, temporarily idling some assembly plants and laying off workers. It said lowered production rates would likely accelerate during the fourth-quarter and extend into the first quarter of 2013. But executives stressed that the slowdown is likely to be temporary.

“We think the opportunity for growth still exists in 2014 and 2015, and you have to make sure you’re ready,” said Chief Financial Officer Ed Rapp during an interview.

Report: South Milwaukee Man Arrested In Oak Creek Bank Robbery

Oak Creek Patch has the story …

According to the Oak Creek Police Department logbook, a security guard at Caterpillar’s South Milwaukee facility reported seeing a man matching the description of the suspect talking with a Caterpillar employee.

The employee told police the suspect is his roommate. A detective then went to the suspect’s South Milwaukee apartment and arrested him.

Online court records show the man, who had not been charged as of noon Monday, has open cases in Milwaukee and Racine counties for misdemeanor retail theft. He remains in Milwaukee County Jail.

Nice job, Caterpillar security guard.

Report: South Woods Of Cudahy Closing

The South Shore is losing an institution.

South Woods is closing later this month after 42 years in business, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

See the story here.

Owner Larry Burss cited factors including the rising price of beef and seafood and the prohibitive expense of making the lower-level banquet room fully accessible for customers with disabilities.

It’s been an emotional week since making the decision to close, he said. “A lot of people, I’ve known for 40 years,” he said.

Burss started working at South Woods in 1974 as a dishwasher; at 16 he was cooking, and at 18 he was tending bar. In 1992, he bought the business.

Although he and his wife are closing South Woods, he’s not leaving the restaurant business.

Starting Nov. 5, he’ll manage banquets at Joe’s K Ranch, about two miles away at 4840 S. Whitnall Ave. in Cudahy.

Is Franciscan Villa Liable For Alleged Rape, Death Of Resident?

That’s the question a Milwaukee County jury will decide in a trial that is now underway, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

See the story here. From it:

The estate of the victim sued Franciscan Villa and its parent, Catholic Health Initiatives, for wrongful death in 2010.

After the January 2009 attack, Mary Spiegl simply lost the will to live, Jeffrey Pittman, the plaintiffs’ attorney, told jurors in an opening statement. She stopped eating or drinking and died 18 days later.

He said evidence will show that administrators at the South Milwaukee home failed to adopt specific policies and procedures regarding resident-on-resident sexual assault, despite the fact the problem had become a well known issue within the industry as early 1999.

Had they done so, the perpetrator may not have been left alone minutes after attacking a different woman at the home, and loudly declaring his interests and intent to have sex with someone, Pittman suggested.

South Milwaukee Dollar General Eyes Expansion

The Dollar General store in Marquette Plaza may be expanding.

The topic was discussed at Monday’s South Milwaukee Plan Commission meeting, when commissioners heard about a proposal to expand the current store at 1131 Marquette Ave. from 8,000 square feet to just shy of 15,000.

Commissioners decided no changes to the conditional use permit were necessary since it’s a tenant expansion, and that the city engineer’s office could approve the change.

The store will take over the space currently occupied by the Marquette Plaza thrift store, which will move to the space formerly occupied by several restaurants.

The expanded location would be larger than your typical Dollar General and even bigger than a larger-format Dollar General under test, according to this story in Supermarket News.

“Anemic” Growth: Bad News For Caterpillar

Update: Here is the Journal Sentinel story.

Caterpillar has lowered its profit expectations, with the company saying it expects “fairly anemic and modest growth through 2015.”

Check out coverage from Bloomberg and Reuters. From Reuters:

The company now expects to earn $12 to $18 per share in 2015, down from its previous forecast of $15 to $20.

“It’s prudent, especially with what’s happened in 2011 and 2012 in the economy, to readjust,” Oberhelman said. “I, for one, am still thinking $15 to $20 (earnings per share by 2015), but we need better economic growth.” …

The new forecast comes a year after Caterpillar paid $7.6 billion for mining equipment maker Bucyrus International, the most in Caterpillar’s 87-year history.

The buyout added mining shovels and draglines to the company’s lineup of trucks and excavators to become the world’s largest producer of mining equipment. Given the weak economy, though, some on Wall Street have questioned the timing of the deal.

Among the world’s eight largest miners, only three are boosting capex spending next year. Vale (VALE5.SA), which has the largest capex budget among miners, plans to cut its 2013 mining budget by 4 percent from 2012 levels.

Capital expenditures in the mining sector could slip at least 10 percent by 2014, JPMorgan estimates.

Since roughly 70 percent of spending in mines is for large trucks, capex cuts are not good news for Caterpillar and peers that include Komatsu (6301.T).

Caterpillar spends roughly 30 percent of its own capex and most of its research and development dollars on mining products.

Funeral Home Competition Coming?

Molthen-Bell & Son Funeral Home may be getting some local competition.

Max A. Sass & Sons Funeral Home is eyeing the former St. Mary’s school building at 1314 Manitoba for a new location.

It would be the funeral home’s fourth.

A public hearing is planned on the project before the South Milwaukee Plan Commission’s meeting on Monday. The commission will then consider a conditional use permit for the development. Here is the agenda.

I’ll keep you posted.

Here is the Molthen-Bell website. Here is the Sass website.

South Milwaukee’s Magnum Fitness Acquired

Another South Milwaukee manufacturer has been acquired.

This time, it’s Magnum Fitness, which is headquartered at 2201 12th Ave. downtown. Taiwan-based Johnson Health Tech announced on Tuesday that it has acquired the firm.

See the Business Journal story here. From it:

In addition to rounding out the existing product portfolio, the acquisition of Magnum also provides production capabilities in North America.

Over the next 12 months Johnson Health Tech management will evaluate how to best integrate the existing Magnum team, product lines, distributors and facilities into its existing operations. Ron Carringi, director of engineering, will serve as general manager of the manufacturing facility.

The company will still be present in Wisconsin with JHT’s global product development, marketing and engineering based in Cottage Grove.

Let’s hope that this is good news for Magnum and South Milwaukee — the similar hope I had/have for Bucyrus (now Caterpillar), Cooper Power (soon to be owned by Eaton), Appleton Electric and Vilter (owned by Emerson) and Ladish (owned by Allegheny Technology Inc.).

Caterpillar Reports Huge Profits

$1.7 billion. That’s how much profit Caterpillar reported for the quarter ended June 30, the company reported on Wednesday.

Check out coverage in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Wall Street Journal and Reuters. From the Journal Sentinel story:

Last year’s acquisition of mining equipment maker Bucyrus International, of South Milwaukee, and engine maker MWM Holding GmbH provided a $1.37 billion boost to sales during the quarter.

Caterpillar is the world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment, and its results are watched closely because they are considered an indicator of industrial activity and the health of the overall economy.

The company’s success this year is occurring even as U.S. construction activity remains depressed and well below the prior peak, and amid problems facing Europe and economic concerns in China, CEO Doug Oberhelman said in a statement.

“The good news is this doesn’t feel like 2008. Interest rates are low, central banks are prepared to inject more liquidity if needed, and housing is coming off lows, not a peak, and seems to be improving,” Oberhelman said.

Of course, word of the huge profits comes amid the ongoing strike in Peoria, Ill., where Caterpillar is seeking significant concessions from workers even during these boom times. WUWM, a National Public Radio station, tackled that issue in a piece this week, following up on a New York Times story published on Monday.

From the story:

At the Caterpillar factory in South Milwaukee, workers are wondering about the implications of the Joliet dispute on their contract. It’s up for renewal next spring.

Barry Lewis is a gear cutter at the plant, and vice president of United Steel Workers, Local 1343.

“Some people are very worried. We’re not sure how it equates to us, I mean, we’re aware that they’re United Auto Workers, we’re Steel Workers. The product lines are completely different,” Lewis says.
