Check out the latest edition of Rocket Update, the South Milwaukee School District’s sports news source.

The latest edition, published Tuesday, includes updates on all the fall sports, including information on the WIAA playoff-bound football team — which was named a Preps Plus Team of the Week this week.

The update also has this item on the boys’ volleyball coach from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and this item on the cross-country team …

The Rockets hosted the Woodland Conference Cross Country Championships last Friday on a fantastic fall day. Sophomore Josh Janusiak finished in 6th place in the boys meet, earning first-team all-conference status with a time of 16:37 (a pace of 5:21 per mile in the 5K race). In the girls’ race, senior Abbie Fakler earned 3rd team All-Woodland by taking 18th place in a time of 16:05 (1 pace of 6:29 per mile in the 4K race) and freshman Rebecca Heller earned 2nd team All-Woodland with a time of 15:57 (a pace of 6:25 per mile in the 4K race).

No. 6 Seed: South Milwaukee Plays Brookfield Central In WIAA Playoffs

Note: A previous version of this post had South Milwaukee playing Brookfield East. That’s my error. There’s too many directional schools in Waukesha County. 🙂

South Milwaukee, seeded sixth, travels to third-seeded Brookfield Central for its first-round WIAA playoff game at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Check out the full list of pairings, released Saturday, here.

Brookfield Central (5-3, including a fourth-place 4-3 in the Greater Metro Conference) is coming off a 14-0 loss Menomonee Falls on Friday. Here are some stats on the team.

South Milwaukee Football Team Makes History

Congratulations to the South Milwaukee football team!

The Rockets are headed to the WIAA playoffs after earning their first conference title in 32 years with a 21-16  win at New Berlin Eisenhower on Friday.

The victory gave South Milwaukee (5-3) a share of the Woodland Conference East crown with Brown Deer and Whitnall. Not bad for a team that started the season with two losses.

Check out the standings and stats. Here is the game story. From it:

Before the team boarded the bus, the school’s athletic director let everyone know that the division’s other co-leader lost as well.

As a result, South Milwaukee claimed a share of the division title with Whitnall and Brown Deer. The crown is the Rockets’ first since 1980, according to coach John Galewski.

“It’s big to me,” he said of the title. “We knew we had a young team coming into the season and they came on during the last five or six weeks.”

We should know South Milwaukee’s playoff matchup this weekend. I’ll keep you posted.

Rockets Roll, Earn Postseason Eligibility

Here is a recap from MaxPreps.

The South Milwaukee football team took a big step toward the WIAA playoffs with a 37-6 win over St. Francis Friday night.

The win made the Rockets eligible for the postseason, and a victory over New Berlin Eisenhower on Friday means South Milwaukee will clinch a spot. See Friday’s stats here.

Check out the playoff qualification update here. From it:

Teams that have a conference winning percentage better than .500 are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. Teams that finish with a conference of exactly .500 are playoff eligible, but not guaranteed a spot. However, in most years only a few teams that finish .500 do not make the playoffs.

So, at 4-3 in the Woodland Conference with one game left, it’s win and you’re in for South Milwaukee … and lose and you’re probably in.

Go Rockets!

Former South Milwaukee AD, Coach Teff Dies At Age 68

Update: Here is the obituary. Services are Monday in Middleton.

South Milwaukee schools lost a respected leader this week.

Jim Teff died Wednesday at age 68, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. See the story here. From it:

“People looked at him with certain reverence just because of all the things that he accomplished at South Milwaukee,” Muskego AD Scott Kugi said. “He had been athletic director of the year a couple of times and was really connected with the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association and the (national association) and with that comes street credit.”

Teff coached football, wrestling and track at South Milwaukee from 1967-’75 before focusing on his role as athletic director, a job he assumed in 1973. He retired in 2001 but remained active with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, serving as program director of the association’s Leadership Training Program.

He was president of the NIAAA board of directors in 1990 and was inducted into the NIAAA’s first hall of fame class in 2009.

Kugi first worked with Teff on the early configurations of the Southeast Conference in the early 1990s.

“He and I spent a lot of time on the phone and behind the scenes working through that and then eventually South Milwaukee did get realigned with Muskego in that next evolution of the Southeast Conference, the 10 teams, so I had the opportunity to work shoulder to shoulder with him,” Kugi said.

“In those days I kept my mouth shut and learned an awful lot from just listening to guys like him and Don Dalton from Burlington and Scott Lindgren from Kenosha.”

Did you know Mr. Teff? Post your comments below … and keep the Teff family in your prayers.

South Milwaukee Rockets Past Cudahy

The South Milwaukee football team’s losing streak came to big end Thursday night — and against a top rival.

The Rockets rolled up 341 yards of total offense to just 24 for the Packers en route to a 56-7 win in South Milwaukee. Quarterback Justin Oliden ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more — both to Evan Marlowe — in the win.

(That must be why I heard so many cannon blasts last night :))

Check out the stats here

Next week’s game is Friday night at Brown Deer. Game time is 7 p.m.

Upset Alert: South Milwaukee Baseball Team Two Wins From State

At 14-18, it hasn’t been the best of seasons for the South Milwaukee High School baseball team. That, however, can change with a couple more wins … and a trip to the state tournament.

Following upsets win over sixth-seeded Muskego and third-seeded Franklin, the 11th-seeded Rockets play seventh-seeded West Allis Hale in a sectional semifinal at 2 p.m. on Monday at Hale. The winner of that game plays top-seeded Oak Creek or Greendale with a berth to the state tournament on the line.

Little League, Big Memories

The South Milwaukee Little League AA season concluded Monday night with the Royals beating the Red Sox in the championship game. Not that the victor matters. It shouldn’t when you’re talking about 7- and 8-year old kids.

What matters at this level is that the kids learn the game in a positive environment with supportive coaches, parents and fans … and have some fun along the way.

The South Milwaukee Little League delivered that and more this season, and my summer is a bit emptier now that it’s over.

Christian, my 7-year-old, was a member of the AA Brewers this season, his first out of Rookie Ball, and he had a blast. So did his family – me included.

Now, winning helped. It’s always more fun when you win, and Christian’s team, led by Coach Bob and Coach Ken, went 11-2 before losing as a No. 2 seed in the tournament semifinals last week.

But my impression of the South Milwaukee Little League was not formed because of the success of his team. Rather, my positive – and, I’ll bet, lifelong – memories will come from the small moments that showed an innocent love for the game that too many of us lose over time.

I’ll remember Christian’s happiness with even the smallest of hits, including his two-out, two-strike game winner late in the season (which I had to celebrate over the phone, as I was out of town) …

His heartbreaking “it’s the end of the world” sadness at making an out (we’re still working with him on that) …

His little legs churning around the bases after a hit (surprisingly quickly, unlike his father) … and

Win or lose, his anticipation of post-game trips to the concession stand (where you can get a lot for $2).

The list of happy memories goes on, and includes the volunteer hours at the concession stand and sneaking up to the press box to run the scoreboard.

I’ll also cherish the time I got to spend with my father, sister and other family members as they, too, became regular and rabid Little League fans.

Of course, not all the memories will be positive. Too often, me included, parents and coaches get too wrapped up in a game being played 7- and 8-year-olds. Perspective can and does get lost. But thankfully those issues were few and far between, and they’ll retreat from my memory.

In their place will be moments like the end of a second-round tournament game between the Red Sox and Royals – the same two teams that would later meet in the finals.

The Brewers and their fans were waiting for this game to end so ours could start, and we had a chance to see first-hand as the Red Sox took a late lead, only to lose it in the bottom of the final inning on a game-winning hit.

I expected crushing disappointment from the Red Sox, to see a bunch of players sobbing into their hands and seeking the calm reassurance of mom. Instead, I saw elation, on both sides … as both teams, seconds after the last out was recorded, happily spilled out on the field and eagerly continued their tradition of racing around the bases after the game.

Smiling kids having fun, win or lose. Isn’t that how it’s supposed to be for these Boys (and Girls) of South Milwaukee Summer?

That’s how it was for my boy. And his dad.
