South Milwaukee Election Results: No Real Surprises As Incumbents Roll

It was a night for incumbents in South Milwaukee.

No challengers — write-in or otherwise — were able to unseat sitting local leaders in the administration, on the City Council or on the South Milwaukee School Board.

Here are the local results:

  • South Milwaukee Mayor Tom Zepecki easily won a fourth term, beating write-in candidates Michael Moeller and Todd Lorino. Zepecki had 78% of the vote to Lorino’s 18.4% and Moeller’s 1.8%.
  • In the First District, incumbent Alderman Frank Van Dusen III cruised past Moeller, also running as a write-in for that seat, 95.1% to 3.8%.
  • Other local offices were uncontested, with City Clerk Jim Shelenske, City Treasurer Karen Skowronski, City Attorney Joseph Murphy and Municipal Judge Bill Fenger all winning re-election.
  • On the South Milwaukee School Board, incumbents David Maass (38.9%) and Kathleen Molus (32.8%) won re-election, with challenger Sophia Williams coming in third (28.3%).

Also winning re-election was County Supervisor Pat Jursik, who was running unopposed. In the locally contested Milwaukee County court races, Carolina Stark and Lindsey Grady won large majorities in South Milwaukee.

Volunteer to Help Make Our City (Hall) Beautiful!

Got the following note from City Clerk Jim Shelenske the other day …

Dear Friends of City Hall,

To me, City Hall is more than the place where government offices are located and city meetings are held. It’s also a symbol, the front door to a community, a place where newcomers build their first impressions of South Milwaukee and a place that current residents point to with pride.

That’s why we need City Hall to have a vibrant and welcoming appearance. With this in mind, the City Hall Beautification Project is well under way!

We have the blueprints and the materials, now we need YOU!  Please join us Saturday, June 4th at 9:00am in front of City Hall.  Bring your shovels, gloves, and gardening tools, and volunteer a few hours to help us plant flowers, trees, and shrubs.  The materials have been purchased thanks to generous donations from the S.M. Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce.

When the work is done, I will provide brats, chips, and soda for everyone.

I hope you join us in supporting this important project and make an investment in the future of South Milwaukee. We deserve a vibrant and beautiful City Hall. Help us make that happen.

Let’s get that front door looking its best!

Thank you,

Jim Shelenske

I you can join us!

An ‘eVentful’ Approach to Keeping Residents Informed

I launched this blog in 2009 as a way to keep residents better informed on local news, information and key issues. That said, I usually don’t do much writing on local events.

Why? Jim Shelenske has those covered.

The city clerk’s (and former alderman’s) monthly eVents newsletter is an invaluable source of information on local happenings, from church dinners to shows at the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center.

You can sign up for Jim’s newsletter at his strong local website: www.southmilwaukee.org. And I strongly encourage you to do so, as Jim looks to increase his email list to more than 1,000.

He published his latest, and newly redesigned, issue this week, with details on Saturday’s South Shore Noon Lions Spaghetti Dinner, the April 9 Divine Mercy Card Social and various South Milwaukee Library activities, among numerous other events.

On a related note: Another good source of local news is County Supervisor Pat Jursik’s monthly Enews. Check out the April edition here.

In an era where we are barely covered by the mainstream local media, these outlets become even more valuable. I hope you agree.
