New Police Chief in Oak Creek and Other Headlines of Interest

Oak Creek has a new police chief, and they didn’t have to look very far to hire him. John Edwards, the interim chief after the retirement of Tom Bauer last summer, was named the new chief last week.

Check out the Oak Creek Patch story here and the Journal Sentinel story here.

Also, Milwaukee County Supervisor Pat Jursik has published her February Enews newsletter. Check it out here.

It contains some pointed criticism of then-Acting County Executive Lee Holloway — a perspective with which I can’t agree more. It also contains updates on the Hoan Bridge and ice skating at Sheridan Park … and the O’Donnell Park parking structure.

On the O’Donnell Park issue, I find myself disagreeing with Pat. I strongly question if pouring good money after bad to repair a deteriorating and unsightly parking structure located on some of the most prime real estate in the state is worth it. I understand the parking concerns, but they are a short-term problem when it’s the long-term future of the site that should be driving the debate here.

The county has an opportunity for a “do-over” on that site, and it should take it. Michael Cudahy has it right. Think big, and act big.

Good Times at Ladish (?) and Other Headlines of Local Interest

The Journal Sentinel has an interesting story about strong profit-sharing gains for Ladish employees as the company is about to be sold to a Pennsylvania firm.

Check out the story here. From it:

It wasn’t a record-high profit-sharing check that Ladish Co. employees received on Thursday, but it was close.

Employees at the century-old company received checks equivalent to 7.26% of their annual earnings in 2010, up from 1% a year ago, when the company had struggled in the recession and a downturn in the aerospace industry.

For an employee making $50,000 per year, this year’s check means an extra $3,630.

More on the Ladish Deal: What Does it Mean for the South Shore?

It sounds like only good news for the South Shore, and Cudahy, resulting from the purchase of Ladish by its largest raw materials supplier, Allegheny Technologies of Pittsburgh.

Here is the Journal Sentinel story on the transaction. From it:

Company executives say they have no plans to reduce employment at the Ladish headquarters and plant in Cudahy. The 105-year-old company has 1,700 employees at operations in Wisconsin, California, Oregon and Poland.

“This is about growth. It is not about consolidation,” said Gary Vroman, Ladish president and chief executive officer.

“This is not putting any blue-collar or white-collar people at risk,” Vroman said. “I want to stay. I look forward to this, and I am sure that we will work things out.” …

The deal is the second blockbuster sale of a Milwaukee-area manufacturer this week. On Monday, Bucyrus International Inc. of South Milwaukee said it was being acquired by Caterpillar Inc. for $7.6 billion.

Ladish also is a major supplier to Caterpillar, which expects to own Bucyrus in mid-2011.

“Years ago, we did quite a bit of work with Bucyrus. And we certainly are looking forward to having discussions with the Caterpillar and Bucyrus combination to see if it will mean something positive to us,” Vroman said.

Also, click here for a Business Journal story on the purchase. From it:

No layoffs are expected as a result of the deal and Ladish brand will remain intact, Vroman said.

“Without question, this merger significantly improves the long-term outlook for Ladish,” he said.

Two South Shore Industrial Fires and Other Headlines of Local Interest

Update: As if Tuesday wasn’t busy enough, there was a house fire in Cudahy Wednesday morning. Read more here.

It was a busy day for local firefighters … which is particularly bad news given the oppressive heat and humidity

First, there was a fire at DIC Imaging Products USA off of Rawson Avenue in Oak Creek. Read a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story here. Then, later Tuesday night, there was a small fire reported at Ladish in Cudahy.

Thankfully, no one, including firefighters, were hurt in either fire.
