I know the weather isn’t perfect, but the South Milwaukee Downtown Market is prepared for a big start to our 2013 summer season.

We start our fifth season today (May 23), and we’re expecting more than 40 vendors selling produce (in season), organics, arts, crafts, baked goods, prepared foods and more.

We also have live music or a special event every week.

Hours are 3 to 7 p.m. this and every Thursday through October 10 (no market July 4). We’re located on 11th and Milwaukee Avenues.

It seems like just yesterday, doesn’t it?

Well, the South Milwaukee Downtown Market open its fifth season on Thursday, May 23, bigger and better than ever.

As always, the market is open from 3 to 7 p.m., and we’re located at 11th and Milwaukee Avenues. Our season runs for 20 weeks through Oct. 10, taking July 4 off.

I’ll be spending most of my Saturday helping out at the South Milwaukee Spring Market, as more than 60 vendors gather at South Milwaukee High School for what promises to be a terrific event.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., so why not stop by, do some shopping, grab lunch from one of our prepared food vendors and listen to some live music in our new seating area?

Just a reminder …

A sure-to-be-interesting public information meeting on the restructuring of county government is set for Thursday at the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center. Led by Pat Jursik and featuring state Rep. Joe Sanfelippo and others, it runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Get a preview of the South Milwaukee Downtown Market’s fifth season — it’s hard to believe it’s been that long — with our next indoor Spring Market on Saturday, April 6, at the South Milwaukee High School Commons.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

More than 50 vendors are expected selling arts, crafts, organics, baked goods, prepared foods and more. And there will be live entertainment presented by the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center throughout the day.

Our Christmas Market at the high school was a big hit, and we expect this event to be the same. See you there!

The story was a predictable one: The potential impact on food prices due to the ongoing drought.

Some farmers have yet to show up to the South Milwaukee Farmer’s Market so far this season. They say their crops aren’t ready. Others say the drought’s affect on their crops will affect the general public’s bottom line.

Farms like Geneva Lakes in Burlington have been hit hard by the drought.

“It’s been pretty difficult lately. We’ve been irrigating like 24/7, trying to keep everything as much as possible. I know a lot of stuff has been damaged. We don’t have any lettuce,” Rachelle Bergersen said.

Down the road at B.S.W. Farms, they say the drought’s affect on the corn crop has affected their chickens, which has affected the production of poultry and eggs for consumers.

“The price is going to go up. The older (chickens) aren’t laying, and they’re going to have to go,” Karen Stardy said.

The good thing about the South Milwaukee Downtown Market: We are much more than produce. So, drought or not, there are plenty of reasons — dozens of vendors selling produce, organics, arts, crafts, baked goods, prepared foods and more — to stop by.
