Wondering About Those South Milwaukee Welcome Signs?

You see that sign at the top of this page? It’s the city’s welcome sign at the intersection of Nicholson and College Avenues.

Well, it went missing several weeks back … and it’s been found again.

Apparently, all of the city’s welcome signs are being (or have been) temporarily removed to be cleaned and otherwise touched up to address fading from the elements. The new one looks great — it’s really eye-catching.

And that’s what a welcome sign should be, shouldn’t it?

when I travel to smaller college towns, at major intersections there are city signs that list major attractions, shopping, city hall, etc. and arrows pointing towards them.

Should South Milwaukee consider this? It could point to the downtown district, city hall/police, library, Bucyrus Museum, Grant Park, SMPAC, etc?

  2. I completely agree. In fact, it’s something I’ve brought up as part of my call for improved communication between the city and others, as well as part of new thinking that’s necessary around marketing our city. More signage is also necessary because of our geography; South Milwaukee is kind of off the beaten path, so giving people directions to major landmarks is even more important for us than other communities. Of course, funding would be an issue, but there have to be creative ways to do this (asking local businesses to sponsor signs?).
