Also, NOW has published a new police blotter. It includes reports of a couple significant thefts — a car and boat — as well as this item:

A man was arrested for obstructing an investigation in the 1400 block of Marquette Avenue after leading officers on a four-block foot chase that began in the 1300 block of Milwaukee Avenue about 11:40 p.m. Aug. 5. Neighbors said the man and another man had smashed a beer bottle on the sidewalk and were loud and disorderly.

Erik – can you tell your readers how South Milwaukee is promoting their city to lure new businesses to our area? It’s very disheartening to read all the new businesses that are growing and moving into Oak Creek that you post weekly, but nothing new here. Is South Milwaukee on hold until Walmart is open, hoping buisnesses are just going to pop up because of Walmart? Now that the comprehensive study is completed by UW-M students for steps to revitalize the downtown area, what now?

Unfortunately Peggy no new businesses are moving here. With Grant Park Plaza having so many vacancies, you would only hope that City Officials would try to lure Merchandise Outlet to relocate from Packard Plaza as it is rumored that they are leaving Packard Plaza with Aldi’s due to a rent increase. But wait!!! Our City Officials are more concerned over the budget and raising our taxes than luring businesses here…AND what about Caterpillar moving departments late this year to Peoria, IL and laying those people here off in December?????

  3. Peggy: That’s a good question, and it requires a complex answer that I’ll be happy to call you about to discuss further. The short answer, however, is “not enough.” I’ve said for three-plus years that we do not do nearly enough to promote our city to prospective businesses, residents and visitors. I’ve tried to do my part in a variety of ways, including playing an active role in the redesign of the city website, launching this blog and helping create the South Milwaukee Downtown Market. (One key goal of the market is to showcase our downtown area to prospective businesses.) I have plenty of other ideas I want to see us work toward. At the top of that list: Creation of a city marketing website and other materials that state our (strong) case to those looking to locate here. Stay tuned on that one.

In other words, this is a work in progress. But we’re not where we need to be, and I’ll be the first to admit we can, and must, do more.

Rick: I assure you this is a priority for me and will be going forward. Of course, the budget is important, too, and I stand behind the council’s record in keeping city tax increases very low in recent years. We budget conservatively, and the numbers clearly show it.

Erik – you may just want to skip the Alderman position and go straight toward mayor. We need a more progressive mayor, and you may just have the wisdom, foresight, and ambition to do just that. It’s time this city moves forward.
