Meet Your South Milwaukee School Board Candidates

While there are contested races for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, state school superintendent and a county judgeship on the April 2 ballot, the only locally contested election is for South Milwaukee School Board, as incumbents Terri Travia and Joseph Weirich face challenger Doug Perry.

The top two finishers will serve three-year terms.

SouthMilwaukee.org has posted candidate profiles — and it’s clear to see that there are some points of difference among the three.

Check them out here. And vote in my new poll!

I will NOT vote for Doug Perry as he signed the recall petition on Gov Walker!

Yes I did sign a petition calling for the recall of Governor Walker. Considering that he and the legislature cut $1,600,000,000 from public school funding in the 2011-2013 biennial budget and has proposed no increase in public school funding while at the same time increasing funding to voucher schools by 40% in the 2013-2015 biennial budget, which are unaccountable to taxpayers like us (reference the voucher schools just last week who were funded by the state without the proper paperwork completed to be a voucher school). As a public educator and strong proponent of public education (why would anyone run for a position on a public board of education if one was not a proponent of public education?), I felt it was important to make a stand against these obvious attacks against public education by signing that petition.

My three children and thus my family have benefited from our great school system in South Milwaukee. I am a candidate for this position to work hard to keep the school system great so other individuals, families and the society as a whole will continue to benefit from our public schools.

      Doug Perry

      you’re welcome!

I’d rather we BOTH be informed of his position than not knowing where he stands, so we can vote acordingly

I agree, if you take the money you should be bound by same standards that apply to the public school system.

I think understanding the issues is very important. 1st south Milwaukee ranks 206 out of 460- not a ranking that should be acceptable to any resident of South Milwaukee.I would not say that south Milwaukee has a great public school system. According to the DPI South Milwaukee has fallen over 100 spots in the last 8yrs. This needs to be addressed. Scott Walker is not attacking public education, he is trying to improve it. We need a school board that acts on behalf of the kids and the tax payer and can make the tough choices. I fear that the damage and the dumbing down of our education, something that is perpetuated by the teachers unions/teachers will take years to undo. We need to start now.
