So Doug Perry, as you write Erik, a “a longtime teacher in the Greenfield School District” is going to represent us, (the taxpayers of South Milwaukee) in future negotiations with the teachers of our school didtrict. Gee, isn’t that special! No conflict of interest of course he’ll say.

as I understand ACT 10, there is no more “negotiating”…the school board is driving the bus. Having someone on the board that spent his entire career in the classroom should be seen as a positive thing, and that is why I voted for Doug Perry.
Good luck to you, Doug! Remember our children…

  2. I don’t see a problem with a (now retired) teacher serving on the school board. In fact, I think it’s a good perspective to have. In part-time local politics, we all have day jobs, after all …

It’s interesting how the actual numbers compare to your poll on the right side of the screen.

With respect to Mike’s comment, it’s not the fact that his day job happened to be as a teacher. There are all sorts of teachers out there. This issues is his extremely vocal support of the unions, rather than school quality, costs, etc., now that he wants to work the other side of the table in support of the taxpayers. That is why before casting a vote, I ALWAYS check the recall database. If a candidate’s name appears there, they do NOT get my vote…ever.

Welcome Doug. And a great thanks to Joe for his service.

Thanks to the extra-ordinary effort of our teachers, our students continue to increase their achievement.

Mr. Perry now has a seat at the table where the Board works to try to reduce the very real damage of on-going budget reductions (ten million in ten years). This is serious work. To balance the books choices must be made. Cut out a sport. Reduce a music teacher. Larger class sizes. Reduce management. Close the pool. Take another wack at staff compensation. Another increase to the medical deductible. Another increase to medical co-pays. Increase student fees to just beyond bearable. All the choices are bad. Next year will not be any easier.

This is serious work that effects students and property values. This is the work of every Board member. Absent a budget that at least keeps up with inflation, cuts will be make. Our schools will be less than they could be.

The threat to the education is not in the hearts of teachers. It started with Gov. Thompson. Then, Gov. Doyle, the Dems, and a short-sighted teachers union failed to reform. Gov. Walker seems intent on accelerating the damage: first with 5.5% budget cut and now a zero percent budget increase.

Welcome Doug. And thank you for running. Difficult work this way comes.

Thank you to Dave, Joe and now Doug for your service in trying to stem the losses and work creatively to sustain and inspire a generation. I appreciate Mr. Maass’s eloquent description of the challenges facing education in its whole.

well gee Doug, after reading the above, I almost wanted to start crying. Oh the poor teachers! But a quick check of the Verify the Recall site show me that YOU TOO (just like Doug Perry) signed the Walker recall. To me, that says alot of the sort of person you and Doug Perry are. My grip on my wallet tightens.

My above comment directed at David Maass of course

From the earliest days of our nation, we have set aside resources to educate our young. Educating the young remains vital to the success of families, commuities, and our nation. Of course, the details of how we achieve this end will be debated. I first ran for the School Board, and serve, to promote the truly incredible things our schools are doing.

In my support of our public schools, I have found fault in myself, in the Dems, WEAC, and the GOP. To get to where we need to go, we need to have eyes wide open. School funding in Wisconsin is a mess. There is fault to be found on all sides. Thompson, Doyle, Walker, and WEAC all have missed chances to fix school funding.

It is good to see so many community members become informed on the failure of school budgets to keep up with inflation over the last ten years.

Good to hear about the number of people contacting Assemblyman Honadel and Senator Larson to express concern about the zero percent increase in the spending limits for schools in the upcoming State budget
