Union Decries Pay Raise For Caterpillar CEO

Here is the story in The Business Journal …

Awarding a 32 percent compensation increase — from $16.9 million in 2011 to $22.4 million last year — even amid record profits is a tough one to explain given the current situation at Caterpillar … a situation that has up to 300 South Milwaukee employees worried about layoffs.

A Caterpillar spokesman pointed out that 2012 was a record year for company revenue, which increased 10 percent to $65.9 billion, and earnings per share, which were up 15 percent to $8.48. Profit was up 15 percent to $5.7 billion.

“Based on our pay-for-performance philosophy, executive compensation for last year was in-line with our results,” said spokesman Jim Dugan in an email to The Business Journal.

That may be true, but …

More Not-So-Great News For Two Major Local Employers

Caterpillar released its first-quarter earnings Monday, and, as expected, it wasn’t pretty — for the company, or South Milwaukee.

Check out coverage from the Milwaukee Business Journal, Reuters and the Wall Street Journal. From the WSJ:

Caterpillar increased its exposure to the mining sector with its 2011 purchase of Bucyrus International Inc. for $8.8 billion. Caterpillar predicted that sales of Bucyrus machinery lines this year will decline 15%, while sales of big mining trucks, large wheel loaders and other mining machinery traditionally built by Caterpillar are expected to fall 50% from last year.

Chief Executive Doug Oberhelman said he remains upbeat about the Bucyrus purchase and the company’s deeper penetration into mining. “I still firmly believe that our move into mining was a change for the better,” Mr. Oberhelman said during a conference call Monday with analysts. “We’re definitely in a down cycle now [in mining], but long term it’s a great business for us.”

And check out Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Business Journal coverage of Cooper Power Systems deciding to ship jobs in Pewaukee to Mexico. Thankfully, this doesn’t seem to impact South Milwaukee, where Cooper Power Sytems employs hundreds of people at its facility on Ninth Avenue.

You’ll recall that Eaton Corp. acquired Cooper last year.

Jursik: “I’m Not Playing This Game Anymore”

Update: Supervisor Jursik is one of the co-sponsors of Milwaukee County Supervisor Marina Dimtrijevic’s reform plan

South Shore Milwaukee County Supervisor Pat Jursik has called for local, not state, action in restructuring county government in a strongly worded statement issued last week.

Check out the press release (including YouTube links to some of Pat’s comments from a committee meeting last week) here. From it:

The moneyed interests of the Greater Milwaukee Committee and Metropolitan Milwaukee Association Commerce are supporting this shift in the balance of powers. With a large majority of their members living outside of Milwaukee County, these wealthy elites are seeking to control local politics. Make no mistake, Representative Joseph Sanfelippo, who now represents a significant portion of Waukesha County – not just Milwaukee County – is seeking to undermine local representation. Not only my constituents, but all our citizens in Milwaukee County, are losing their local voice. …

About 200 District 8 citizens attended the Restructuring County Government event in South Milwaukee on April 4, 2013. I heard from the local people. Make no mistake, some restructuring will need to be done and I heard loud and clear that the board needs to trim its budget. But I want to work locally to make these adjustments, not with the self-appointed shadow government from outside our county.

The Assembly voted for a bill authored by Rep. Joe Sanfelippo last week and is expected to take a final vote on the matter in May. It’s unclear when the Senate will act, even as a group of county supervisors have come up with their own plan for restructuring

I’ll keep you posted. Of course, I’d like to know what you think about all of this. Post your comments below.

Caterpillar Negotiations Update

Update: Here is Business Journal coverage. Cat reports earnings Monday.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has a brief update — provided by the Steelworkers union — on the ongoing Caterpillar contract talks.

While minor issues are being resolved, big differences remain, according to the story. From it:

“Management is still seeking sweeping changes to our layoff and seniority language, and is demanding unfair concessions in other major economic and noneconomic areas,” the Steelworkers union said.

Negotiations have been under way for several weeks.

I’ll keep you posted.

Job Ready: What The South Milwaukee School District Is Doing To Prepare Students For The Workforce

As I’ve gotten to know the South Milwaukee School District more, I continue to be impressed its people and its programs — not to mention its students.

The district is unafraid to try new approaches to reach kids and help them succeed in a world changing at a dizzying pace.

One great example: the district’s work to ensure students are “job ready.”

I’ll let Chris Daniels, the district’s work-based learning and virtual high school coordinator, explain more in this “guest blog.”

The School District of South Milwaukee has developed a program to promote students to potential employers as “Job Ready”.  Students who possess the attributes of good employees and have demonstrated those qualities in the school setting can apply for and receive the certification.

The program came about after talking with members of the business community and hearing that they want employees with strong work ethics and employability skills.  To address that need, the district formed a K-12 committee to come up with a way to assess those attributes.  From April 15 to May 15, sophomores through seniors can apply for the certification. Once certified, students can take that certification into the business community to show that they would be good employees.

To qualify, students not only have to meet minimum grade point and attendance requirements, but they must complete service to the greater community.  Furthermore, they must be assessed by a sponsor teacher who will review an essay as well as personal traits including Communication, Cooperation/Interpersonal Skills, Integrity, Motivation/Leadership, Problem Solving/Common Sense, and Work Habits and Attitudes.

All students meeting the criteria will be given the “Job Ready” certification, and are encouraged to use it as part of their portfolio when applying for employment. While the district cannot guarantee employment and is not responsible for securing employment for “Job Ready” students, the program has been endorsed by the South Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce, and the district encourages employers to hire students with this endorsement.

If you have children who could benefit from the “Job Ready” certification, please encourage them to apply.  Also, please support local businesses who display the “Job Ready” poster and hire our students.  If you are a business owner or manager, we encourage you to hire some of our amazing students who have demonstrated to us that they are “Job Ready”.  Working together, we can continue to create the next generation of business leaders and quality employees and keep our community strong.

For more information on how the program can benefit you, your children or your business, please contact me at cdaniels@sdsm.k12.wi.us, or at 414-766-5140.  You can also learn more by reviewing the “Job Ready” application at the following link:  http://goo.gl/MMVSD

Council Roundup: EAB Update, Walgreens Property Sale, Council Leadership And More

Rounding up some items from tonight’s South Milwaukee City Council meeting …

  • The council approved awarding a contract to Bluestem Forestry Consulting for a citywide tree survey. The survey should be wrapped up by the fall, as Bluestem identifies each tree on city property and in the right of way (estimated to be between 8,000 and 10,000 trees) using a variety of characteristics, including its relative health (and potential for emerald ash borer infestation). All trees will then be plotted on the city’s GIS system. Bluestem will also present options to the city as to what to do with the data that’s collected, as we determine just how to tackle EAB in South Milwaukee. Here is a previous post.
  • The council approved the sale of the Grant Park Plaza Walgreens parcel to LJL Holdings Milwaukee, a Florida-based company that owns a number of Walgreens parcels in strip malls across the country. This is in line with the plan approved earlier this year allowing for the sale of “pieces” of Grant Park Plaza to be sold individually. You will recall an agreement has also been reached to sell the Pick ‘n Save parcel. We’ll see what happens with the other sections. Of course, the center section of the strip mall remains vacant. Let’s hope that the financial flexibility the selling of these parcels provides the mall owner will lead to added investment in the property, and the filling of the vacancy.
  • The council approved contracts for repaving projects on the Nicholson Avenue frontage road and 8th Avenue from Lakeview Avenue to Drexel Avenue, as well as patching on Columbia Avenue. This is just the start of the summer construction projects. I’ll post more on individual projects as they come before the council.

The council also voted on its 2013-15 leadership and council assignments, and they essentially remain unchanged. Alderman David Bartoshevich remains council president. I was named chairman of the Public Works & Public Property Committee after serving in that role in 2011-12. I was vice chairman last year.

Also, former Alderman, state Rep. and state Sen. Jeff Plale was appointed to the Police & Fire Commission.

Statewide Tornado Drill Set For Noon Thursday

Update: Not surprisingly, this has been moved to Friday.

In case you’re wondering why the sirens are blaring … check out this message from Milwaukee County Emergency Management.

As part of the State Emergency Management’s Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week, on Thursday, April 18, 2013, a statewide tornado warning drill is planned.  The National Weather Service will issue a “test” tornado watch at 1:00 P.M.  This will be followed by a “test” tornado warning that will be issued by National Weather Service at 1:45 P.M for Southeast Wisconsin and the Milwaukee County Outdoor Tornado Warning Sirens will be sounded at this time.  There will be no “all clear” message issued by National Weather Service.  If there is any threat of severe weather on April 18th, the siren test will not be conducted.

Prayers For Boston

Awful, just awful. What kind of people do this?

As the father of an 8-year-old boy — one of the victims of Monday’s Boston bombings apparently was an 8-year-old boy — it’s difficult to comprehend today’s events. Difficult, but not impossible. Nothing surprises me anymore.

For now, please join in praying for those impacted by this senseless tragedy. In some ways, that’s all of us.
