Dashing Into A Freezing Lake Michigan

The 2014 Polar Bear Dash is in the books, with more than 250 runners competing in a 5K run through Grant Park, followed by a plunge into a 36-degree Lake Michigan. About 50 actually took the plunge at the end — under the watchful eye of the South Milwaukee Fire Department, of course.

Here are more details on event. And thanks to South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter for the image.

Did you take part? How was it?

I’ve been going to South Shore for years but because of the temps this year it was frozen solid so I found out that Grant had a race and a polar bear dip. Glad I did, it was a good time (Watching of course), but we had to keep going back to the truck to warm up as the temp and especially the windchill was freezing cold. I could never jump into that water this time of year! My idea of a polar bear dip was going from the hot tub to the lap pool at the YMCA this morning! Glad to see so many people participated in this race/dip though. I think we’ll change our new years routine to watching at Grant rather than South Shore in the future!
