School On In South Milwaukee

South Milwaukee students will have school on Monday, according to the district website.

The message from the district: “All South Milwaukee Schools will be OPEN on Monday January 27th, 2014.  Please check back in the morning for any new developments but at this point we plan on holding classes on Monday.”

I’ll keep you posted, and we’ll see about Tuesday. With a predicted low of minus-18 and a wind chill of minus-50 possible overnight Monday, leading to a wind chill warning, it’s hard for me to see schools being in session Tuesday morning.

Monday has obviously been a tougher call. Some large districts like Milwaukee and Racine are closed. Others are open, including, from the looks of it, all of the Milwaukee County suburban districts. Many local private schools are closed, including local high schools like St. Thomas More, but not all (including Divine Mercy and Zion Lutheran).

I don’t think that schools and businesses should close down just because it’ll be cold. This is WI, Deal with it. Up until recently schools and stores never closed because of some cold! And what about people in Alaska, Canada, or even northern WI. They’d be closed for weeks or months if they closed down because the temperature drops to 3-20 below. And another thing…. How about the utility workers from water and electric department, ups/fed ex, tank truck drivers for gas stations, trash collectors, mailmen and women that are outside all day wether it’s hot or cold???? Yep, they’ll be out there in the weather while schools and some businesses are closed down (and the places that are closing down have heat and AC whereas these people have nothing!). I feel that if anything it should be up to the parents wether they want their kids to go to school or not, maybe just not hold attendance against them for missing these days if the parents decide to keep them home these days. I’m sure most would be able to get a ride for the kids or they’d be ok for the short walk. All of the closing just keep adding on to the end of the year and how many parents have to miss work to stay home with their kids, pay a sitter, or just go on with their schedule and leave the kids home alone. Not trying to start any kind of argument or anything, just my 2 cents worth..
