Decisions: Recall Absentee Voting Now Open

The recall primary for governor and lieutenant governor is coming up quickly — May 8 — and you can now vote in the race.

In-person absentee voting — for real and “fake” candidates alike — is allowed at City Hall until 5 p.m. on Friday, May 4, and absentee ballots will be mailed soon to those who have requested them.

Check out sample ballots and other election information on the city website.

And keep in mind that it looks like voter ID laws will not be in place for the May 8 primaries, and maybe beyond, due to the ongoing court case.

Also, be sure to vote in the poll on the right side of this page!

South Milwaukee Election: More Thoughts On Tuesday’s Results

Paging through some of the South Milwaukee election results …

  • Turnout was about as expected: 36.2%. More than 4,200 of 11,641 registered voters went to the polls.
  • It was a clean sweep across all four districts for Mayor Tom Zepecki — even in the First District, where he scored big wins over district resident and write-in candidates Todd Lorino and Michael Moeller. Zepecki had 546 votes in the First, compared with 371 for Lorino and 31 for Moeller.
  • David Maass got the most votes for South Milwaukee School Board in all but the Third district. He won big in the First, picking up 690 votes to 463 for challenger Sophia Williams and 433 for Kathleen Molus. Molus won the Third with 595 votes to 559 for Maass.
  • Remember when Newt Gingrich was a Republican presidential front-runner? He got all of 96 votes Tuesday in South Milwaukee.
  • The results tabulated Tuesday did not include 27 outstanding absentee ballots, including seven military ballots and six from overseas. Forty total absentee ballots sent out were not returned. See this.

So, what stood out for you as you look at the results?

Here is reaction from Verhalen.

In St. Francis, CoryAnn St. Marie-Carls beat Jeffrey L. Mayer in the mayoral race. See the story here.

South Milwaukee Election Results: No Real Surprises As Incumbents Roll

It was a night for incumbents in South Milwaukee.

No challengers — write-in or otherwise — were able to unseat sitting local leaders in the administration, on the City Council or on the South Milwaukee School Board.

Here are the local results:

  • South Milwaukee Mayor Tom Zepecki easily won a fourth term, beating write-in candidates Michael Moeller and Todd Lorino. Zepecki had 78% of the vote to Lorino’s 18.4% and Moeller’s 1.8%.
  • In the First District, incumbent Alderman Frank Van Dusen III cruised past Moeller, also running as a write-in for that seat, 95.1% to 3.8%.
  • Other local offices were uncontested, with City Clerk Jim Shelenske, City Treasurer Karen Skowronski, City Attorney Joseph Murphy and Municipal Judge Bill Fenger all winning re-election.
  • On the South Milwaukee School Board, incumbents David Maass (38.9%) and Kathleen Molus (32.8%) won re-election, with challenger Sophia Williams coming in third (28.3%).

Also winning re-election was County Supervisor Pat Jursik, who was running unopposed. In the locally contested Milwaukee County court races, Carolina Stark and Lindsey Grady won large majorities in South Milwaukee.

South Milwaukee Republicans Back Romney

And it wasn’t even close.

South Milwaukee voters in the Republican primary supported Mitt Romney with 49.7% of the vote, topping Rick Santorum (34.9%) and Ron Paul (10%) locally, according to a summary of South Milwaukee results.

Statewide, Romney won easily, but by a smaller margin over Santorum.

For what it’s worth — and it’s hard to read tea leaves on this one given voting dynamics in a primary — President Barack Obama got 1,195 votes locally on Tuesday compared to 2,813 combined votes in the Republican primary.

Second Write-In Candidate For South Milwaukee Mayor

A second South Milwaukeean is running as a write-in candidate for mayor.

Todd Lorino announced his candidacy this week and has a number of yard signs around town. He joins Michael Moeller as write-in candidates against incumbent Mayor Tom Zepecki, who is seeking a fourth term.

Lorino has launched a Facebook page about his candidacy. On it, he explains his reasons for running as this:

Why run for mayor? After attending many common council meetings, I became concerned about the lack of communication and collaboration. I decided that if I expectd changes, I would have to get involved in the process. The goals for our city are well defined in South Milwaukee’s 2020 Comprehensive Plan. These goals of having a strong business district, maintaining the parks and improving the schools are all ones with which we can agree. Reaching these goals given our current debt will be a challenge. We need to curb the TIF spending that puts the tax burden on the citizens to make up lost revenue.

Lorino has also been an outspoken critic of the Walmart development.

More On Moeller For Mayor (And Alderman)

Mayoral and aldermanic write-in candidate Michael Moeller has launched a campaign website. Check it out at www.michaelmoeller.org.

Moeller also put out a press release about his candidacy on Friday. See it here. From it:

Long-term South Milwaukee resident Mike Moeller has officially announced his intent to run as a write-in candidate for South Milwaukee’s upcoming regular election for Mayor and special election for 1st District Alderperson scheduled for April 3. This is a historical event in local politics to have both elections occurring at the same time and one man running for both positions.

“South Milwaukee is an ideal community, and my family and I are proud to call it home,” Moeller shares. “But we are missing out on key opportunities that can make our city stronger and move us in the right direction for a more promising future.”  He adds, “South Milwaukee must strengthen its name and have a clear direction as to where the city wants to be in the short and long-term. As the country and state works to pull out of the recession, we need to have a solid plan in place to attract new businesses and residents.”

Challenger Carolina Stark and incumbent Nelson Phillips III have advanced to the April general election for Milwaukee County Circuit Court judge in Branch 17 — and the race was almost a tie in South Milwaukee.

Check out the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story here. And here are the South Milwaukee results, which showed less than 20 votes separating first and third place …

  • Nelson Phillips III: 373
  • Carolina Stark: 360
  • Christopher Lipscomb: 353

If you don’t mind sharing, who did you vote for and why?

(And check out Oak Creek Patch for their local results. Oak Creek had mayoral, aldermanic and clerk races onthe ballot Tuesday.)

Reminder: Voter ID In Effect Tuesday

The biggest news about Tuesday’s primary election is not necessarily what’s on the ballot — it’s the start of the new voter ID requirements.

Learn more about what you can expect on the Government Accountability Board website here.

The most basic changes: Voters must show a photo ID in order to vote beginning this year. And all voters must sign a poll list before being issued a ballot. But it’s more complicated than that. Learn more in my previous post on this.
