Arrest Made In South Milwaukee Liquor Store Robbery

South Milwaukee police have made an arrest in the B.J.’s Liquor robbery last month.

Here is the press release I receive today from South Milwaukee Police Chief Ann Wellens …

Through the efforts of Lt. Cary Fischer and Investigator Mike Hill, the suspect in the BJs robbery has been arrested.  The suspect was caught while perpetrating a similar crime in Wauwatosa.  Information provided by Lt. Fischer and Inv. Hill aided the Wauwatosa Police Department in catching him in the act.  Without their efforts, he would likely still be free to continue to commit crimes.  He has been referred to Milwaukee County for charging.

Congratulations and thanks to Lt. Fischer for his work — and to the entire department for all they do to keep us safe.

Celebrating Our Police And Citizen Heroes

Thank a police officer today … and those among us who help them do their jobs and make South Milwaukee a safer place to live.

The South Milwaukee Police Department and the City Council did just that Tuesday night, honoring a number of officers and citizens for their work saving lives and solving crimes.

It’s all a part of National Police Officers Week this week.

See a list of honorees, and their stories, here … and let’s all celebrate these everyday heroes. One example:

Mr. Joseph DeLong

Officer Mick Olson recommended Mr. DeLong for a Citizen Recognition Award for his action on February 17, 2012.

On February 17, 2012 Mr. DeLong was working as a United States Postal Carrier in the City of South Milwaukee.  While on his route Mr. DeLong observed three days of accumulated mail at a residence.  He felt this was unusual and notified his supervisor who then contacted SMPD.  Officers responded to the residence, forced entry into the residence under the community care taker role and located an elderly home owner on the floor of the residence.  The owner had fallen three days earlier and was unable to get up.  Because of Mr. DeLong’s actions this individual was able to get help when he needed it the most.

Although the Police Department has been called to residences by mail carriers in the past, this was the first time a resident was found in duress.  Mr. DeLong’s actions saved the resident’s life.

Updating The February Liquor Store Robberies

As you may recall or may have heard, Chicago Avenue Liquor and Marquette Avenue Liquor in South Milwaukee were both robbed on the same day in February. So was a Mobil gas station in Oak Creek.

The suspect — a 24-year-old South Milwaukee man — in the Oak Creek case was arrested, and South Milwaukee police have told me that the same man was involved in the two South Milwaukee cases.

For a variety of reasons, the man isn’t expected to be formally charged with the South Milwaukee incidents, but the incidents will get “read in” to the record as part of the man’s court proceedings.

Turnell Lewkowski has pleaded not guilty to the Oak Creek charge, according to online court records.

Thanks to the Police Chief Ann Wellens for the update, and for their work these cases.

Decision Made In South Milwaukee Sex Offender Case

Update: Be sure to vote in the poll on this issue!

A Milwaukee County Circuit Court judge has ruled in favor of the city in the case against a sex offender who challenged unsuccessfully the constitutionality of South Milwaukee’s sex offender ordinance.

Judge Maxine A. White has ordered that Todd Kester move from his residence at 809 Manitowoc to a residence that complies with the city’s sex offender ordinance — one more than 1,000 feet from schools, day care centers, parks and other “specialized facilities” — by June 30.

Read the ruling — and a good history of the case and the ordinance — here. Kester is appealing the ruling.

White had already declared the city’s ordinance constitutional in a previous ruling, and a state Appeals Court declined to take up the matter.

Man Shot To Death In Cudahy

A 19-year-old Cudahy man was fatally shot at a house party early Saturday morning, and it was an “apparent homicide,” according to reports.

Check out the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story here. From it:

Cudahy police described the shooting as an isolated incident and said residents of the area are in no danger.

The St. Francis and South Milwaukee Police Departments and the Wisconsin State Patrol have helped in the investigation.

The last homicide in Cudahy occurred in June 2010, Poellot said.

In that incident, John Weinhold of Oak Creek was found shot to death inside a minivan. James Szuta of South Milwaukee, who told investigators he owed Weinhold money for drugs, was sentenced to life in prison last October.

Couple Quick Notes From Law Enforcement

Update: And here is the police report from South Milwaukee NOW.

Oak Creek Patch has a story about how Oak Creek police eventually caught two men suspected in a robbery over the weekend in South Milwaukee’s 4th District.

Check it out here.

Also, I got this email from the South Milwaukee Police Department over the weekend, in case you were wondering why Flight for Life was in South Milwaukee on Saturday …

On August 27th 20011 at 659 pm South Milwaukee Police Officers were dispatched to [Manitoba Avenue] in response to a report of a male subject who had shot himself in the head.  Officers arrived and did locate a [redacted] male subject with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. This person was transported to Froedert Hospital by Flight For Life at 803 pm.

I took out the complete address and a few other details to protect the man’s privacy.

“Stupid” 4th District Shooting? It’s Also Scary

Jim Stingl had a somewhat light-hearted column in today’s Journal Sentinel about a South Milwaukee man who allegedly had himself shot by a friend … all in the name of love.

This bizarre story would be laugable if the shooting hadn’t happened right in the heart of the 4th District — on Beech Street and the Oak Creek Parkway. In that way, it’s a bit scary (and a good argument for stiffer gun control, but that’s another blog post, another day).

Anyway, check out the story here. And don’t try this at home.

Odd Report of Suspicious Person at Tri-City in South Milwaukee … With Photos

South Milwaukee police are asking for your help in identifying a suspicious person who came into Tri-City National Bank in South Milwaukee on Tuesday, July 12.

Check out the press release for more, including a photo of the person. From the release:

The male was obviously disguised and made certain he did not touch the door with his hands, pushing it with his covered forearms when he came in and out. The man approached the teller who asked him how he was doing, the man replied “good” then said, “okay” and left the bank without doing any business.

Odd, indeed. Anyone with information can call the department at 768-8060.

Hearing Set in Frozen Rope Case

The City Council’s Legislation and Permits Committee voted tonight to set a hearing in The Frozen Rope case for 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 13, at City Hall.

The city received a formal complaint from a neighbor of the bar following the shooting Saturday night — the second shooting outside the tavern in less than two months.

The first incident helped lead to a 14-day suspension of the bar’s license. It remains to be seen what the punishment will be this time around.

I will keep you posted. The hearing is also open to the public.
