9-11 Memorial Bus Pays a Visit

The FireCareers.com and 9-11 memorial bus has made dozens of stops on its long journey already, and it came to South Milwaukee on Sunday — one of three stops planned for Wisconsin.

Check out the bus below … and see my previous post for more information on this cool effort.

One note on that fire scene on the side of the bus: It’s a couple of shots from the massive apartment building fire a few years ago near 18th and Drexel in South Milwaukee. The photos were taken by 4th District resident Nick Szablewski.

(Also, thanks to Lt. Glenn McCoy for sending the below photo along.)

Never Forget: 9-11 Bus Tour Stops Sunday at South Milwaukee Fire Department

On a weekend where we celebrate our independence, South Milwaukeeans also have a chance to remember a defining moment in our nation’s history.

The 9-11 Anniversary Manhattan to Manhattan Bus Tour makes a stop at the South Milwaukee Fire Department around noon on Sunday.

The goal? According to the flier I received from local firefighter Brian Bieganski:

To Visit and have fellowship with hundreds of police/fire departments and other organizations—collecting pictures with the bus at hosted stops while raising donations through the sale of 9/11 Patches, Decals, Pins and Flags. Net proceeds will benefit the FDNY Bravest Scholarship Fund, Terry Farrell Fund and the Feal Good Foundation—donated in New York on 9/11/11

The event is open to the public, so join me and stop by … and celebrate our everyday heroes while remembering the fallen.

More Heroes in Action: Recapping 2010 for the South Milwaukee Fire Department

As I wrote about earlier this week, we had the pleasure of honoring some local heroes at Tuesday’s City Council meeting, a group of police officers, residents and others who risked their lives and safety to keep others safe.

Of course, the South Milwaukee Fire Department has its own share of heroes.

Learn more about some of their great work in the department’s 2010 annual report, which we accepted at Tuesday’s council meeting. Among the highlights summarizing the department’s 117th year of existence:

  • The department responded to 2,985 requests for service. Of those calls, 2464 were for emergency medical service, and 521 were for fire/rescue/service. This compares to 3,003 calls for service in 2008 and 2,940 in 2009.
  • Dollar loss from fires also spiked to more than $2.9 million thanks to three big blazes: the Appleton Electric foundry fire, the total loss of a multi-family apartment building at 1504 Manitoba Ave. and major damage caused by a fire at 500 Willow Lane.
  • The department made one capital equipment purchase in 2010, a 25-foot Steiger Craft rescue boat. The new boat replaces our 1984 Boston Whaler and was purchased primarily with grant funds from the Urban Area Security Initiative Port Security grant program.
The report also contains information the department’s education, inspection and other efforts aimed at keeping our community safe.

According to the report cover note: “We are proud of our member’s efforts and outstanding safety record while performing their duties on these calls and serving with reduced staffing levels since 2007.”

I can’t agree more. Our department does more with less … and we need to make sure we do all we can to preserve this high level of service.

A Special and Well-Deserved Honor For One of Our Fire Captains

Without a chief since earlier this year, the South Milwaukee Fire Department continues to quietly deliver the kind of first-class service that all city residents can be proud of.

The department’s captains, who are essentially the acting chiefs of the department these days, can certainly take their share of credit for that. And one in particular — Joseph Knitter — is doing especially great things.

Capt. Knitter recently completed National Fire Academy training and earned the designation of “Executive Fire Officer,” a status that has only been achieved by a very small group of firefighters throughout the nation.

The mayor and City Council formally recognized Knitter at its meeting Wednesday night.

To become and Executive Fire Officer, Knitter studied and performed research for four years and authored four applied research papers, all of which have been published by the U.S. Fire Administration.

Here is one of them from 2007 on the SMFD’s efforts at unveiling a competency assessment tool.

Police and Fire Commission to Re-Advertise for Fire Chief

The search for a new South Milwaukee fire chief will take longer than expected.

The Police and Fire Commission, at its meeting this week, directed City Administrator Tami Mayzik to re-advertise the vacant fire chief position in hopes of receiving a wider selection of applications from qualified candidates.

The new deadline for applications will be May 18.

As you’ll recall, Chief Jay Behling retired earlier this year.

I will keep you posted as developments warrant.

South Milwaukee Fire Chief to Retire

Update: The City Council accepted Chief Behling’s letter of resignation at its meeting Tuesday night and approved his request for a residency exemption.

South Milwaukee Fire Chief Jay Behling will retire effective Jan. 31 after six years in the role.

The item is on the City Council agenda for Tuesday’s meeting, as well as his request for an exemption to the city’s residency requirements. Chief Behling wants to move outside of the city until he retires.

I wish Chief Behling the best.

While he certainly has not been without controversy, I have enjoyed getting to know Jay over the past 18 months and respect the job he has done in leading the department and our emergency management efforts. Our fire (and police) forces are first-class and, with budgets tight and resources limited, they truly know what it is like to do “more with less.”

I’ll keep you posted on the next steps here, including the search for a replacement. The Police and Fire Commission will do the actual hiring, and they are meeting on this issue Tuesday at City Hall. Here is the agenda.

I’d also like to know what you think about the news. Post your comments below.

Willow Lane Fire Update: How to Help the Family

Updated: Reports in South Milwaukee NOW that arson was the suspected cause of this fire were incorrect. I apologize for repeating the error on this blog. I’ll keep you posted on more information when I get it.

Here is how you can help the family displaced by the recent fire at 500 Willow Lane.

Rawson Elementary is collecting clothes for the two children (girls sizes 6-8 and boys 10-12) until Wednesday, Sept. 22. Donations can be brought to the school office, with the family picking up donations from there.

See my previous post about the fire here.

I’ll keep  you posted as I learn more about this.

Fire Extensively Damages Willow Lane Home, Leaves Five Homeless

Update: Here is the press release from the police department.

Some scary moments overnight for one 4th District family, as five people escaped a house fire at 500 Willlow Lane shortly after midnight Friday morning.

This WTMJ radio report says one child was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation, and this one from WISN says two people were taken to the hospital. Other reports from Fox 6 and CBS 58 say two dogs were killed.

I’ll post more information when I get it. In the meantime, please keep this family in your prayers.
