The “False Dichotomies” Of The Transportation Debate And Other Local Headlines

Milwaukee County and South Shore Supervisor Pat Jursik had a thought-provoking editorial in Sunday Milwaukee’s Journal Sentinel, in which she criticized the “false dichotomies” that pervade the debate over road building and transit.

From it:

Community columnist Nancy Ettenheim on Sept. 2 mischaracterized my “really, big millennial” idea as just another new freeway. In effect, Ettenheim is singing the same old song: the Milwaukee blues. This is the blues of false dichotomies: If you support a bike trail, you can’t have a road; if you support buses, you can’t have a bike rack; if you support road building, you can’t have bikes or buses.

Walker Names Plale To Railroad Post And Other Local Headlines Of Interest

Former Democratic South Milwaukee State Sen. Jeff Plale has been named the state’s railroad commissioner — his second job under Gov. Scott Walker since being defeated in his re-election bid last fall.

Here is the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story. From it:

Plale as a senator from South Milwaukee took positions with Republicans on issues last year such as rejecting union labor contracts and opposing failed legislation to fight climate change. He will make $90,000 a year in the railroad commissioner job.

“As commissioner of railroads, I will improve rail infrastructure and safety,” Plale said in a statement. “I understand the importance of a comprehensive transportation infrastructure and the profound impact that rail has on commerce and job creation.”

Plale has been serving as facilities administrator in the Walker administration — a role he had come under some scrutiny for due to the timing of the appointment, which came shortly after he broke with party ranks to vote against the legislation mentioned above.

I had raised similar questions.

I wish him well in his new position, and I think Jeff’s qualified for it given his experience in dealing with transportation issues while in Madison. I also like Jeff and think he was a good legislator and strong voice for South Milwaukee — and we agreed on many issues (even on his vote against the state union contracts).

Anyway, here is the press release. And check out these other headlines of interest from around South Milwaukee and the South Shore:

From it: An in-depth inspection was initiated in 2010 to determine future needs of the Hoan Bridge.  The findings indicate that the structural integrity remains intact and safe. Although continued maintenance projects have kept the bridge functional, a long-term solution is needed to keep this key route open for business.

Interview With Pat Jursik, Missing Tortoise, State Fair Mob Violence and Other Headlines

Check out these headlines from around the South Shore:

Also, an Oak Creek man tells a harrowing story about the mob violence at State Park on Thursday. Check out the Journal Sentinel story here. From it:

“You could just tell they were after white people. That was the main thing. If you were white, they were coming after you,” said Jon Stikl of Oak Creek.

He said he was stuck in traffic as a group of young people blocked cars near the fair gate on S. 84th St. near I-94 after he picked up family members attending the fair.

“We noticed a group of five to 10 young black males run up and jump a young white male for no other reason then him being white,” Stikl said.

They knocked him to the ground, and then a group of 15 black men kicked and stomped on him, Stikl said.

“My wife’s brother jumped out of the car – his natural reaction was to try to break it up. Before you knew it, five or 10 guys were on him and started punching at him. My wife was able to pull him back in the car. So now they surrounded my car and just started punching through the windows, kicking and shaking the car, screaming racial things.”

He said there should have been more police presence, given that disturbances were reported inside the fairgrounds shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday.

“I was disgusted by the lack of security. It’s a black eye on the State Fair” and police, he said.

I’ve also posted a new poll question about the violence. Cast your votes!
