Tragic Story: Carbon Monoxide Kills Two South Milwaukeeans
Accidental carbon monoxide poisoning was the cause of death of two South Milwaukee cousins over the weekend.
Check out the Journal sentinel story here. From it:
Juan H. Vasquez and his cousin Noe Ramirez-Abriz, 28, had gone to a dance in Milwaukee Saturday night and borrowed their cousins’ car. Saturday was Vasquez’s 29th birthday.
The men lived with their cousin Sebastian Corona Ambriz and his wife Silvia Corona in the 700 block of Minnesota Ave. Silvia Corona told authorities that she awakened around 2 a.m. Sunday to attend to a baby, looked outside and noticed the garage door was partially open and the light was on, according to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s report. She thought the two men had come home from the dance and then she went back to bed.
Sunday morning when Vasquez and Ramirez-Abriz could not be found inside the house, Silvia Corona went outside to the garage, found the overhead door closed and then saw the men dead in the front seat and the family’s two pit bulls dead in the back seat.
I’ll keep you posted as I get more details.

Couple Uplifting Stories of Local Interest
Update: Here is a Journal Sentinel story on Buddy, the heroic dog.
In these times, we need some good news, don’t we?
Here are a couple uplifting stories from the past couple of weeks involving South Milwaukeeans …
- This one from WISN shares the story of a heroic dog who saved his South Milwaukee owner from freezing to death during the Blizzard of ’11.
- And this one on Jerianne Hayslett’s South Milwaukee NOW blog is about an effort to help a 99-year-old man who had $1,500 stolen from him last month.
Unfortunately, there is some bad news. The South Milwaukee boys basketball team’s season came to an end on Saturday with a 56-53 loss to Milwaukee Pulaski.

New Police Chief in Oak Creek and Other Headlines of Interest

Also, Milwaukee County Supervisor Pat Jursik has published her February Enews newsletter. Check it out here.
It contains some pointed criticism of then-Acting County Executive Lee Holloway — a perspective with which I can’t agree more. It also contains updates on the Hoan Bridge and ice skating at Sheridan Park … and the O’Donnell Park parking structure.
On the O’Donnell Park issue, I find myself disagreeing with Pat. I strongly question if pouring good money after bad to repair a deteriorating and unsightly parking structure located on some of the most prime real estate in the state is worth it. I understand the parking concerns, but they are a short-term problem when it’s the long-term future of the site that should be driving the debate here.
The county has an opportunity for a “do-over” on that site, and it should take it. Michael Cudahy has it right. Think big, and act big.

$16 Million Settlement in Oak Creek Power Plant Case and Other Headlines of Local Interest
A $16 million settlement has been reached in the lawsuit stemming from the explosion at the We Energies Oak Creek power plant in February of 2009.
Read the Journal Sentinel story here. From it:
On Feb. 3, 2009, an explosion and fire occurred in a dust collector at the power plant in Oak Creek. Eight ThyssenKrupp Safway employees who were building scaffolding inside the dust collector were injured, Trecek said.
The Safway employees had been hired by United States Fire Protection to build the scaffolding.
After an investigation, federal safety regulators cited the Waukesha scaffolding company and We Energies. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration alleged “willful and serious” safety violations by We Energies and contractor ThyssenKrupp Safway Inc. in the explosion.
There were several strong South Milwaukee connections to this incident. Our fire department was among the first on the scene, and one of the workers, Alex Trevino, the most seriously injured, lives in South Milwaukee.

Good Times at Ladish (?) and Other Headlines of Local Interest
The Journal Sentinel has an interesting story about strong profit-sharing gains for Ladish employees as the company is about to be sold to a Pennsylvania firm.
Check out the story here. From it:
It wasn’t a record-high profit-sharing check that Ladish Co. employees received on Thursday, but it was close.
Employees at the century-old company received checks equivalent to 7.26% of their annual earnings in 2010, up from 1% a year ago, when the company had struggled in the recession and a downturn in the aerospace industry.
For an employee making $50,000 per year, this year’s check means an extra $3,630.

One Way MMSD Plans to Address Flooding Problems and Other Headlines of Local Interest
As you probably know, South Milwaukee has its own wastewater utility — one independent of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District.
I think this is a positive for our city, giving us local control over this important public works responsibility.
That said, I think it’s important to keep an eye on what MMSD is doing in response to basement backups and other flooding problems arising from last July’s storms. The district’s latest proposal: potentially charge homeowners an average of $3,000 to repair sewer laterals and disconnect foundation drains.
Learn more in this Journal Sentinel story.
I’ll tell you that there are no plans for a similar response in South Milwaukee, where we are planning to focus on some bigger picture solutions, rather than going home by home and putting the cost of some of these fixes directly on the backs of property owners. Learn more in my previous post on this … and stay tuned for more details on some of the projects we’ll be undertaking in 2011 and beyond in coming weeks.

Oak Creek Power Plant Update and Other Headlines of Interest
So, the Oak Creek power plant is finally complete.
Read the full Journal Sentinel story here. From it:
The biggest unknown: the project’s final cost. We Energies will file reports detailing the final cost this year when it seeks to adjust rates for 2012 and 2013, Kuester said.
Regulators approved a $2.15 billion price tag for the project, and set a cap allowing overruns of up to 5% to be passed along to utility customers.
“We hope customers won’t have to pay for any cost overruns associated with the construction of the power plants,” Charlie Higley, executive director of the coustomer group Wisconsin Citizens’ Utility Board. “We’re also hopeful that the plants continue to run well, and that We Energies doesn’t charge customers for any costs associated with uneven performance” of the first coal plant last year.
