Rocket Sports And Activities Update

From the South Milwaukee Athletic Department …

SOFTBALL

The Rockets Varsity Fastpitch Softball team has started the season out extremely well. They are 10-1 thus far after last night’s thrilling 3-0 win at New Berlin West. The game was scoreless through 6 innings when the Rockets came to bat in the top of the 7th. Caitlin Schwanke (10) reached base and Abby Mahsem (11) hit a 2-run home run to give the Rockets a lead they would not relinquish! Maddie Veres (9) followed that with a solo home run for a little insurance and the Rockets moved to 8-0 in the Woodland Conference!

On Monday night, the Rockets scored a 22-0 win over Shorewood behind 9 (yes…nine) RBI by Abby Mahsem (11) and a one-hitter from Maddie Veres (9). These were timely performances from Maddie since if you look below you will see that she was named the Journal Sentinel Area Player of the Week for last week!

The Rockets crept into the area rankings in the #10 spot, one spot behind Woodland Conference favorite New Berlin Eisenhower, a team that South Milwaukee just happened to shutout 5-0 last Friday (gotta love the logic in rankings)!

Here is there upcoming schedule. Come on out on Friday for a big game as the Rockets take on division foe Whitnall at 4:30pm at the Rawson Softball Complex!

WEDNESDAY – SM @ St. Francis (doubleheader-4:00pm first pitch)

THURSDAY – SM @ Shorewood

FRIDAY – Whitnall @ SM

AREA RANKINGS

Last week

1. Westosha Central (12-3) 1

2. Racine Case (9-2) 2

3. Kenosha Bradford (8-4) 3

4. Union Grove (9-3) 6

5. Wilmot (8-4) 5

6. Muskego (12-2) —

7. Menomonee Falls (13-4) 4

8. Watertown (7-2) 10

9. New Berlin Eisenhower (10-2) 9

10. South Milwaukee (8-1) —

NOTABLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Maddie Veras, South Milwaukee. The freshman first baseman brings a combination of discipline and power to the plate that should be fun to watch the next three years. On Friday her power was on display as she smacked two home runs and drove in every run in a 5-0 victory over New Berlin Eisenhower. Veras’ first homer, a three-run shot in the first inning, was mammoth. “In 13 years of coaching softball, that is the farthest home run I’ve ever seen,” Rockets coach Heather Hanson said. “She was getting close to 300 feet probably.” Veras finished that game 2 for 2 and went 9 for 14 with 13 RBI for the week. She is hitting .515 with 20 RBI for the season.

Eric Klamrowski (Class of 2010)
MSOE standout tennis player (and Rocket standout of course) Eric Klamrowski just finished his senior season being honored for the 4th straight year as a 1st team all-conference performer for the Red Raiders!

DECA NATIONALS
South Milwaukee had 4 competitors at the DECA national competition in Atlanta, GA last weekend:  Nick Herzberg (12), Darrel Clayton (12), Tim Hennessey (12), and Bart Brzezcki (12).  At the DECA national event there were over 17,000 attendees competing in over 25 different events.  Nick Herzberg and Darrel Clayton competed in the Sports and Entertainment Marketing event.  Tim Hennessey and Bart Brzezcki created an advertising campaign for Tesla Motors.

Tim and Bart scored in the top 20 of their event out of 150 teams in the preliminary part of the competition. They qualified for the final competition.  At the grand awards ceremony they were called up as one of the top ten teams up to the stage in front of the crowd of 17,000. Even though they did not place in the top 3 of their event, they did place in the top 10 out of 150 teams from around the country.

FCCLA NATIONALS

Great news!  The SM FCCLA chapter did an amazing job at the State Leadership Conference in early April.  I am so proud of the work they’ve done, and they were a joy to take as representatives of South Milwaukee to the conference.

Rocket Sports Update

From the South Milwaukee School District … apologies on the dates. “Last night” means Wednesday.

ROCKET SOFTBALL

The Varsity Fastpitch had a thrilling come-from-behind victory last night over Greenfield to push their Woodland Conference mark to 2-0 on the young season. This game had everything from key strikeouts by standout pitcher Abby Mahsem (11) to timely hits by freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors alike…a total team contribution.

With the new WIAA rule in place requiring an outfield fence, the Rockets saw their first 2 home runs of the season with an early 2-run HR by Maygen Marcell (10). After trailing 5-2 late in the game, a 2-run HR by Alyssa Sadowski (11) (scoring Maddie Veres (9)) capping a 4 -run inning to put the Rockets up 6-5. Despite not getting a ball out of the infield in the top of the 7th inning, Greenfield was able to tie the game and send the game to extra innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Rockets loaded the bases with Alyssa Sadowski starting it off with a walk. Dani Schwanke (12) hit a solid double to the right field fence pushing Alyssa to third. Melaney Wewers (12) had an infield single to load the bases, setting the stage for Isabelle Parello (9) to line a single through to left field to drive Sadowski home for the winning run. It really was one of the more exciting regular season games I’ve seen in a long time! Nice job Rockets!

The Rockets travel to Wauwatosa West HS (JV at Whitman Middle School across the freeway) on Thursday and to Greendale on Friday to take on the Panthers at 4:30pm (Varsity at the HS & JV at the Community Center). Good luck Rockets!

A Beautiful “Beauty And The Beast” At South Milwaukee High School

IMG_9847 IMG_9611 IMG_9953 smallCongratulations to the cast and crew of the South Milwaukee High School Theatre Company’s “Beauty and the Beast”!

Thanks to Leslie Henry for providing the following …

The South Milwaukee High School Theatre Company produced the show Beauty and the Beast last weekend and it was a tremendous success.  According to production director, Julie Pikulik,” the company was proud to present a show that the entire family could attend.”  About 70 students participated in the cast, stage crew, orchestra and direction of the show.  These youth masterfully learned their lines and the difficult music and performed with ease and grace.  They also designed and constructed imaginative costumes and intricate sets and where some show patrons remarked the show came out of a “Disney Vault.”   It was so realistic that a young member of the audience yelled out to warn the Beast when Gaston the show’s villain was going to get him.

The SMHS Theatre Company’s mission is to create a safe, respectful and collaborative environment for students to learn the values and life skills of teamwork, confidence, honesty, kindness, perseverance and responsibility through the production of high-quality performances.

This highly successful endeavor that drew an audience of over 400 each of the days in the three show run and brought many communities within South Milwaukee together. It was evident by seeing the variety of people including the ages and interests that this show was a true community triumph.

Bravo to the directors, students, volunteers, staff  and community for supporting the dramatic arts for youth of South Milwaukee.

Do you have news or information to share on the blog? Please send it along. I try my best in writing about all things South Milwaukee, but I don’t have much time to do original reporting outside of city issues. That means I’m reliant on others to provide content … so keep it coming!

Footloose At St. Thomas More

FootlooseA quick shoutout to my alma mater, which is putting on “Footloose” this weekend.

The following cast members live in South Milwaukee …

  • Gabriella Hamilton: plays Wendy Jo
  • Francesca Hamilton: plays Urleen
  • Isabelle Branger: featured dancer
  • Hannah Cox: plays the flute

More details from the school …

Numerous other cast members are from Cudahy and Oak Creek and three of the above cast members are graduates of Divine Mercy School in South Milwaukee.

Since the day Matt Zembrowski stepped on the scene as Theater Director at St. Thomas More High School, it has been a family affair. It is Matt’s second year as Director and the program is growing by leaps and bounds since his arrival. Many improvements have been made to the Auditorium and the surrounding areas, including new seats, paint and sound upgrades. This year’s spring musical, “Footloose” has a cast of 34 on stage while last year’s musical had 19.  Zembrowski brings with him a whole cast of his own characters as well. His father Bill is in charge of scene design, while his mother Liz is House Manager. Matt’s brother Zach is in charge of lighting and his sister Rachel is Assistant Director. But the family connections don’t end there; Footloose boosts two sets of siblings on stage as main characters. Playing the lead role of Ariel is senior Kaitlyn Serketich, while her sister, freshman Carly Serketich, plays Vi, Ariel’s mother.  In the role of Wendy Jo is senior Garbriella Hamilton, and her sister Freshman Francesca Hamilton is her side-kick Urleen.

This musical featuring the chart-topping classics “Footloose”, “Let’s Hear It For the Boy” and “Holding Out For a Hero”, is sure to get you on your feet!  Footloose is being performed for the second weekend at St. Thomas More High School Auditorium, 2601 E. Morgan Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53207 – March 14 & 15 at 7:30 pm and March 16 at 2:00 pm.  Tickets are General Admission. They can be purchased at the door, $10 Adults and $5 Students/Seniors.  For more information visit our website at www.tmore.org.

South Milwaukee Cinderella?

Update: Belmont lost.

Looking for a Cinderella to cheer for in the upcoming NCAA Tournament?

Well, a former South Milwaukee star has led his team to one win shy of the Big Dance.

Drew Windler (2009) is a starting forward for Belmont, which plays in the Ohio Valley Conference championship at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday on ESPNU. The winner gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The 6-foot-9 Windler, who transferred to Belmont after two years at Samford, had nine points in the OVC semifinal win over Morehead State Friday and is averaging 10 points and 4.2 rebounds per game for the Bruins.

Belmont won its division and is 24-8 overall after finishing 14-2 in the OVC.
