Simply tragic. Tragic.
But not necessarily surprising — not in an era where it seems like weather is more extreme than ever.
Please keep everyone impacted by these storms in your prayers. And hold your kids a bit tighter tonight.

In case you’re wondering why the sirens are blaring … check out this message from Milwaukee County Emergency Management.
As part of the State Emergency Management’s Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week, on Thursday, April 18, 2013, a statewide tornado warning drill is planned. The National Weather Service will issue a “test” tornado watch at 1:00 P.M. This will be followed by a “test” tornado warning that will be issued by National Weather Service at 1:45 P.M for Southeast Wisconsin and the Milwaukee County Outdoor Tornado Warning Sirens will be sounded at this time. There will be no “all clear” message issued by National Weather Service. If there is any threat of severe weather on April 18th, the siren test will not be conducted.

Here is information from the National Weather Service — perhaps three more inches of rain this week, or more.
These better be some pretty nice May flowers …

Update: We hit the four-inch mark as of 7 a.m. Thursday, the Wastewater Treatment Facility reports …
A few updates on local flooding concerns …
I also asked wastewater for an update on its operations, and thanks to Superintendent Andy Bakalarski for providing this …
The South Milwaukee Wastewater Treatment Facility has pumps deployed at the known trouble spots in the city, but at this time, there has not been a need to divert any of the wastewater in the system. At the treatment facility, the upgrade project has caused us to route the flows around the construction areas, but we are treating the wastewater to the best of our ability, while protecting the facility and the areas under construction.

Good news, for now.
The flood warning issued for Oak Creek in South Milwaukee has been cancelled.
Check out the National Weather Service bulletin here.
I hope things remain OK the next two days, with more rain in the forecast. Mitchell International reported more than 1.7 inches on Tuesday alone, according to WISN.
This was the view of Oak Creek, looking north from Rawson Avenue, around 6:15 p.m. I’m a bit concerned what this will look like with another couple inches of rain …

Update: Here is the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story.
Here is the warning from the National Weather Service.
The key detail: The creek is expected to rise above flood stage of eight feet by 4 p.m. today. It stood at 7.4 feet as of 2:15 today.
And more rain is on the way …
I’ll keep you posted. And, of course, I’d like to know what you’re seeing. Post your comments below.

An inch of rain, melting snow, frozen ground and a gutter probably in need of an extension … not a good combination.
Did anyone else get water in their basement the last couple of days? We did — as much as we’ve ever had in the six-plus years we’ve lived in our house.

For all of you hoping for a snow day today (and I’m married to a teacher, so I know that’s not just kids): Sorry.
South Milwaukee Schools are open today, despite the snow. That’s according to the district website.
Meanwhile, some area districts are closed today, including Milwaukee, Oak Creek-Franklin, Franklin, Whitnall, Wauwatosa and West Allis-West Milwaukee. Others are apparently open, at least as of 6:15 a.m., including Cudahy and St. Francis. Divine Mercy also appears to be open.
Here are Milwaukee County school closings.
And I got this message from Dan at the Street Department this morning …
We started salting yesterday afternoon and by 5 we started plowing. Last night at midnight we went to a 5 area plow/salt operation. Right now for today we will have a 4 area plow/salt with alleys being cleaned up as well. Garbage collection will be picked up today as well. We also have 3 front end loaders out cleaning up cul de sac’s and bus stops, corners, municipal lots etc. Today we will also have a city sidewalk crew out as well.

With six to 12 inches expected by the time this is all said and done, I’m just wondering what you’re seeing out there with this latest winter storm. Post your comments below.
This post has a quick reminder on snow removal ordinances. It’s from 2009, but it still applies.
Stay safe!
