The Cost Of Our Harsh Winter

Winter is over. Right? I hope so, because it led to some real costs for the city — and communities across the state.

A couple examples that we discussed at the April 22 South Milwaukee City Council meeting …

  • Water Utility. We had 45 water main breaks between December and March, compared with 22 during the same period last winter. And we had another 15 reports of frozen water lines, compared to none the year before. All in, it’s estimated the winter cost the utility $230,000, compared to $105,000 in 2012-13.
  • Street Department. Costs for snow and ice removal have also been significant. We are already running ahead of our snow and ice removal overtime budget for the year, even though we still have November and December to go in 2014. So let’s hope for a mild start to next winter.

Of course, we are not alone here.

And we may be getting some outside help.

South Milwaukee recently joined other communities in making application with the state to obtain federal disaster status. Gov. Scott Walker recently submitted that paperwork to the federal government, so we’ll see if that leads to any funds coming back to South Milwaukee.

Thankfully, there are still eight months left in 2014. We’ll see where this nets out come Dec. 31.

Welcome The Newest Alderperson

The newest South Milwaukee alderperson is Peggy Clark.

Peggy was chosen over four other candidates from the Fourth District following interviews in front of the South Milwaukee City Council Tuesday night.

She replaces me in the role and will serve through the spring elections in 2015.

I’d like to wish Peggy all the best in her new (old) job, which she formally assumes starting with the May 6 council meeting. You’ll recall that Peggy was the Fourth District alderwoman from 2003 to 2007.

It was a strong group of candidates — and I want to thank all of them for interviewing. It’s good to see so many smart, community-minded people interested in serving in city government.

Fines For Cooper Power After Acid Spill And Other Headlines

Update: And County Supervisor Pat Jursik has published a new e-news update, with information on transit and other items.

There are reports that Cooper Power Systems is facing a $166,000 fine from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration following an October chemical spill that injured seven employees.

Here is the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story. The Business Journal also has coverage.

And check out these other South Shores headlines …

Also, NOW has published a new police blotter, including this …

Police are investigating theft of about $1,000 in cash from the Milwaukee Lounge, 1009 Milwaukee Ave. According to police reports, surveillance video shows a man using a key to enter the bar at 9:49 a.m. April 20, then going to the bar’s office before leaving several minutes later.

And this …

Extensive vandalism was found near the pavilion at Grant Park, 100 E. Hawthorne Ave., the morning of April 19. There was graffiti on the building, saplings pulled from the ground, and garbage cans were found on the roof.

And this …

A 25-year-old South Milwaukee man was cited for reckless driving, criminal damage to property and unlawful use of a vehicle in a park after police received reports of a car driving across parkland in the vicinity of 16th and Marquette avenues just before midnight April 18. The driver abandoned the car, which had struck several trees and crossed Oak Creek before landing on its side. The man, who said he had gotten lost, turned himself in to police April 23. He was also cited for possession of drug paraphernalia after a marijuana pipe was found in the car.

Downtown News: Welcome Two New Businesses From Cudahy

Fancy PawsGraveyardSome encouraging news downtown … and we’re just getting started!

First, let’s welcome two new businesses, both moving from downtown Cudahy after more than a decade there. I had a chance to meet both merchants on Saturday.

  • Fancy Paws, a dog grooming business, is already open on the corner of 12th and Milwaukee Avenue. Owner Donna Mae Straseski offers grooming for all breeds, large and small, and supplies. Above, she is holding Bailey, fresh from a bath.
  • Graveyard Records & Move Maniacs, which bills itself as the “Midwest’s largest horror collectibles store,” is also moving to downtown South Milwaukee, and is expected to open in late May, early June. When you talk about unique destination retail, this is it. Really cool stuff that I guarantee you can’t get at Walmart, Kohl’s, Target or Southridge Mall. Owner Dave Curtis is pictured above outside the store at 1013 Milwaukee Ave., formerly home to Kelvin Schroeder Jewelers.

Please join me in welcoming these two new stores to South Milwaukee!

And two more notes …

South Milwaukee Carpet, located in the former Garden Theater building, is closing after more than 30 years in business. Bonnee and Gary are holding their retirement sale now, and I wish them well. Also, Tai Ping Chinese Restaurant has closed, but will reopen under new ownership, according to a sign at the restaurant.

Five Candidates For Fourth District Aldermanic Spot

The South Milwaukee City Council will choose the next Fourth District alderperson — my replacement — on Tuesday night, and there is strong interest in the job.

Five candidates have applied. They are:

  • John Bordak;
  • Peggy Clark;
  • Rick Kopaczewski;
  • Heather Page; and
  • Nick Szablewski.

Two candidates have experience on the council: Peggy (2003-07) and Rick (1996-2001) previously served as alderpersons in the Fourth District. And others have served the community in other ways (boards, commissions, South Milwaukee Lions, etc.).

You’ll recall that each candidate will interview before the council Tuesday at a meeting beginning at 6 p.m. at City Hall. See you there!

Strong Earnings For Caterpillar

Some good news in Caterpillar’s first-quarter earnings report, which came out Thursday … but mining continues to struggle.

From the Reuters story

Caterpillar said it expected its sales to the global construction industry to increase 10 percent from 2013, up from a previously anticipated rise of about 5 percent.

But it cautioned that 2014 would be “another very tough year” for mining, another key market, and that its outlook reflected an anticipated drop of about 80 percent in sales of large mining trucks from the company’s peak year in 2012.

Adam Fleck, an analyst at Morningstar, said he was pleasantly surprised by the company’s “very solid cost control in construction in particular,” where operating margins continued to grow and “were at their highest quarterly level in several quarters”, even though they were typically more compressed than in the mining equipment category.

Fleck said the weakness in mining “wasn’t terribly surprising” and added that because that once-critical business accounted for just 17 percent of sales and 12 percent of operating profit in the first quarter, any continued weakness in the sector was “more of a headline risk than a true economic one.”

The better-than-expected report was tinged with caution. Chief Executive Officer Doug Oberhelman said the Peoria, Illinois-based company was watching several regions closely. Having visited China recently, he said the construction industry there was facing challenges.

Caterpillar was also concerned about the situation in Ukraine and Russia, he added.

The news followed stories this week of mixed dealer data and of reduced 2013 compensation for the CEO.

Of course, we’ll continue to watch the Caterpillar news closely, especially that from the mining front, given our (and Oak Creek’s) position as the center of Cat’s global mining operations.

With that in mind, I had a really positive meeting with several local Caterpillar officials on Friday, as part of my ongoing efforts to introduce myself to local elected official and business owners.

I look forward to keeping lines of communication open … and I have Caterpillar’s commitment to do the same. Having a strong partnership with our largest employer is a priority for me as mayor.

Clean Up Your Community This Saturday!

Just a reminder that Saturday is the annual South Milwaukee Earth Day Cleanup event …

I really hope to see huge numbers out picking up trash around the community, be it at or around one of the five gathering spots– 16th and Rawson, City Hall, Chicago Avenue and Oak Creek Parkway, the fire dpartment and Grant Park Beach parking lot — or around your neighborhood.

Check out the event listing on the city’s Facebook page, or learn more in my previous post. (And if you haven’t liked the city’s Facebook page, please do.)

As an added incentive, besides the free lunch for volunteers, the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center is offering five pairs of tickets for its weekend shows for participants in the cleanup, including if you’re willing to hand out garbage bags to residents at Saturday’s South Milwaukee Spring Market at the high school.

Spread the word!

Report: Former South Milwaukee Student Found Dead In Atlanta

Fox 6 has the disturbing details on the case of 24-year-old Andre Tripps. From it …

A group gathered at South Milwaukee High, the school Tipps graduated from, on Sunday, April 20th to remember the man.

“It breaks my heart that a good person is gone,” said Heather Vogel. “Wouldn’t you feel his pain? Why would you do that to him?”

Firefighters in Georgia discovered Tripps’ body last week while responding to a brush fire outside of Atlanta. His hands and feet were tied up and his body burned. Officials aren’t sure what circumstances led up to the point where Tripps was found.

“How anyone would want to do that to a person in general is — it doesn’t make any sense,” said Vogel.

Local Churches Doing Great Things

Easter Baskets 011Our local churches make South Milwaukee stronger through volunteerism and helping others.

Two great examples from last weekend …

First, above is a photo of 29 laundry “Easter” baskets filled with food headed to Human Concerns for distribution in time for the holiday. Members of South Milwaukee’s First Congregrational United Church of Christ prepared them on Palm Sunday, and I was happy to stop by and thank them for their efforts.

IMG_0374Also, 66 members of South Milwaukee’s Trinity Lutheran Church (my church) packaged meals for 9,000 kids through the Food for Kidz program. The meals are headed to El Salvador. Check out the group shot above.

Thanks to everyone who helped with these two efforts — and all of the terrific work that happens at our local churches. Their commitment to community is evident at every turn.

Purse Snatchings: Keep Alert

The latest from the South Milwaukee Police crime alert information service

On Saturday April 19th, we took and attempt purse snatching call. It was only an attempt because the lady involved knew enough to strap her purse to her shopping cart. The offender was watching for her to step away from her cart and when she did, the attempt was made but not successful. It all happened in just a few seconds.

Unfortunately these days precautions like this need to be taken, so please do what you can to secure your purse wherever you go.
