Bug Education: Emerald Ash Borer Presentation Scheduled Before Sept. 18 Council Meeting

I worry South Milwaukee is late in joining the fight against the emerald ash borer … but at least we’re taking the first step. We’re learning about the issue, so we can make informed decisions on what to do next.

That’s why I’m glad Rebecca Lane, Oak Creek’s forester, is speaking at a meeting of the Public Works & Public Property Committee on Tuesday, Sept. 18, starting at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall (before our City Council meeting at 7).

Learn more about the ash borer here … and I’ll keep you posted on our response to this.

Former South Milwaukee AD, Coach Teff Dies At Age 68

Update: Here is the obituary. Services are Monday in Middleton.

South Milwaukee schools lost a respected leader this week.

Jim Teff died Wednesday at age 68, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. See the story here. From it:

“People looked at him with certain reverence just because of all the things that he accomplished at South Milwaukee,” Muskego AD Scott Kugi said. “He had been athletic director of the year a couple of times and was really connected with the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association and the (national association) and with that comes street credit.”

Teff coached football, wrestling and track at South Milwaukee from 1967-’75 before focusing on his role as athletic director, a job he assumed in 1973. He retired in 2001 but remained active with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, serving as program director of the association’s Leadership Training Program.

He was president of the NIAAA board of directors in 1990 and was inducted into the NIAAA’s first hall of fame class in 2009.

Kugi first worked with Teff on the early configurations of the Southeast Conference in the early 1990s.

“He and I spent a lot of time on the phone and behind the scenes working through that and then eventually South Milwaukee did get realigned with Muskego in that next evolution of the Southeast Conference, the 10 teams, so I had the opportunity to work shoulder to shoulder with him,” Kugi said.

“In those days I kept my mouth shut and learned an awful lot from just listening to guys like him and Don Dalton from Burlington and Scott Lindgren from Kenosha.”

Did you know Mr. Teff? Post your comments below … and keep the Teff family in your prayers.

Park Friends Update: Beach Cleanup, Beach Walk Saturday

I got this email from Jody Johnson of the Friends of Grant Park group last week …

Hello Friends of Grant Park!

On Saturday, Sept. 15th from 9  to 11:30 a.m., Friends of Grant Park will host an Adopt-a- Beach Cleanup in conjunction with the Alliance for the Great Lakes.  We will meet at the lower beach parking lot just west of the beach house, and volunteers will be asked to bring back what they find to a sorting area so that we can tally the trash.  Beach Cleanup Volunteers must sign up via http://www.greatlakesadopt.org and plug in Grant Park as the location to do so.  They may contact Betsy Abert by phone or email as well:  betsyacorn@aol.com and 414-764-9244.

Thus far, we have 19 volunteers, but considering the high level of beach use during this long hot summer, we could use many more.  We hope you will pass the word to others and invite groups or individuals to participate. Volunteers should wear long pants for protection and although gloves will be provided, please don’t hesitate to bring your favorite pair from home.

There will be ongoing Family Day activities taking place near the beach lot, including volleyball and an early evening Beach Walk sponsored by the Friends of the Mill Pond.  Lots to do on September 15th!

On Saturday, October 6th, our Fall Weed-Out begins. We’ve located plenty of removal areas across from the golf course where the buckthorn is thick.  Meet us at 9 a.m. in the parking lot next to the tennis court. An afternoon session is also scheduled, so if the morning doesn’t work, please meet at 1 p.m. at the Tennis Courts lot.  Even an hour of dedicated removal will make a world of difference to the health of our woodlands.  Tools and gloves will be provided.  Not suitable for children.

Also, the Friends of the Mill Pond and Oak Creek Watercourse are holding their annual Beach Walk and Star Gazing event on Saturday, starting at 5 p.m. From the group’s Facebook page is this description: A sunset beach walk stroll along an illuminated path, campfire, s’mores for purchase, and gazing at the stars with stargazer Greg Gonia and telescopes. Fun for the whole family.

Crime Data And More: South Milwaukee Police Department Files 2011 Annual Report

It was a busy year full of accomplishments for the South Milwaukee Police Department in 2011.

Check out a good summary of the department’s work in its 2011 Annual Report, which was received by the South Milwaukee City Council on Tuesday.

See the report here.

Among the highlights for the department last year:

  • The department received re-accreditation from the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation Group – 14 years after the department became the first one in Milwaukee County to obtain this honor. See my previous post here.
  • Police partnered with the A Child is Missing Alert Program, a nonprofit organization that assists law enforcement in the early search and recovery of missing children and the disabled and elderly. This participation allows the department to activate an alert system, sending a message via phone when needed.
  • The police department collected and safely disposed of 158 pounds of medicine as part of a program it instituted in 2010.
  • The department also upgraded its radio communications equipment in 2011, purchasing mobile and portable radios and control bases in compliance with national requirements.
  • And the department continued to serve the community through its Drug Abuse Resistance Education and bicycle safety programs. Details are in the report.

The report also includes crime data from 2011, and there is some good news there, too.

  • Total calls for service fell slightly in 2011 to 23,172, down from 23,561 a year earlier.
  • Violent crime stayed static in 2011, with 16 incidents reported, the same as in 2010.
  • Property crime was down 13.7%, with 513 incidents reported. Burglary reports fell from 119 to 77, and thefts fell from 434 to 410.
  • Arrests were down significantly, from 1,166 to 715.
  • Clearance rates improved, from 34.4% in 2010 to 36.9% in 2011.

Thanks again to all the great work our police department does … and please post your comments below.

South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center Season Opens Sunday With John Gurda

Check out the first event of the 2012-13 South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center Performing Arts Series on Sunday, as local historian John Gurda returns to the SMPAC for a presentation called “History of the South Shore.”

Here’s the description from the SMPAC website:

Take a journey with local historian, John Gurda, as he describes the history of the region from Walker’s Point stretching south to South Milwaukee and into Oak Creek. The evening will include light refreshments after the presentation for a chance to reminisce about the days gone by!

Showtime is 6:30 p.m., and tickets are a bargain … just $5 or $10.

I’m looking forward to the event and to the rest of the strong lineup the center is bringing to South Milwaukee this year. The SMPAC is something we should all be proud of.

South Milwaukee Rockets Past Cudahy

The South Milwaukee football team’s losing streak came to big end Thursday night — and against a top rival.

The Rockets rolled up 341 yards of total offense to just 24 for the Packers en route to a 56-7 win in South Milwaukee. Quarterback Justin Oliden ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more — both to Evan Marlowe — in the win.

(That must be why I heard so many cannon blasts last night :))

Check out the stats here

Next week’s game is Friday night at Brown Deer. Game time is 7 p.m.

Go Rockets!
