I am a big fan of our Little League program and encourage you to consider it for your children.

My 10-year-old son is entering his fifth season in the program, and it has taught him so much, not just about baseball, but life. And it’s the group of hard-working volunteers, from coaches to concession workers, who make it happen.

This program is something all of South Milwaukee should be proud of.

Play Ball! Little League Parade, Opening Day Set For Saturday

cropped-ll-parade1.jpgSaturday is one of my favorite days of the year: South Milwaukee Little League Opening Day.

The festivities start with a parade at noon. It leaves from 12th Milwaukee, heads east on Milwaukee to Ninth, then south to Drexel, then east into Little League Park.

Brief opening day ceremonies follow. Then there’s a full slate of games.

Diamond #1

  • 1:30 Shakes vs Small Fries
  • 2:30 Mets vs Brewers
  • 4:30 A’s vs Yankees

Diamond #2

  • 1:30 Golden Arches vs McFlurries
  • 2:30 Bees vs Emeralds
  • 4:30 Blue Jays vs Brewers

Diamond #3

  • 1:30 McMuffins vs McNuggets
  • 2:30 Blue Claws vs Red Wings
  • 4:30 Iron Pigs vs Bulls

Please line the parade route and cheer on the kids — including my AAA boy! — and then stop by for some great baseball and fun.

We should cherish Little League in this community … it’s an important part of the fabric of this city. And Saturday is one of those special traditions that we should all embrace in South Milwaukee.

See you there!

The South Milwaukee Little League is one of the things that makes this community special. As the proud parents of a soon-to-be AAA player next year — AA All-Star in 2013! — my wife and I continue to be impressed with the organization and what they do.

And our son, Christian, loves it.

Well, registration for 2014 is coming up soon. Here are details from Little League …

  • Pay by Check/Cash $100.00 (Rookie $50)
  • After January 30th the Registration Fee is $110 (Rookie $50)

In an effort to accommodate for Little Leaguers to play with their classmates, and ease the burden on parents and guardians, Little League has amended its residency requirements to allow children to play in the local league whose boundaries where they attend school is located.

And here are the tryout dates …

South Milwaukee Little League Team Falls In Regionals

It was a good run for the South Milwaukee Little League Intermediate boys team, but their season is over.

The boys went 1-2 in three games in the Intermediate Central Regional.

Jerrianne Hayslett has the story in her New Kid’s blog.

Congratulations on a great season!

On To Regionals: South Milwaukee Little League Team Makes History

South Milwaukee’s boys of summer aren’t done yet.

The South Milwaukee Little League intermediate boys team (ages 11-13) beat West Bend Tuesday night to win the state title and advance to the Central Regional tournament in Millwood, Mich., this weekend. This puts them a few wins away from qualifying for the national tournament in San Francisco later this month.

This is a big deal. How big? It’s the first time in 35 years that any South Milwaukee Little League boys team at any level has advanced to regional competition.

The Little League intermediate level is designed to help older boys better transition from “traditional” Little League – those competing to play in the ESPN-televised World Series in Williamsport, Penn., each year – to more advanced levels like high school.

The team needs your help. They are seeking to raise money for the additional travel expenses.

Those interested in helping can contact Madeline McCarrier at 414-429-0001 or at madeemac@yahoo.com.

Here is the tournament bracket. Go South Milwaukee!

A Day To Celebrate Little League

One thing I love about South Milwaukee is its unique traditions. One of them happens Saturday.

That’s when the Little League Parade pushes off at noon from the Salvatore’s parking lot downtown and continues west on Milwaukee Avenue and south on 9th Avenue to Little League Park. Then, it’s the Opening Day celebration, which includes a kickoff ceremony and a full slate of games.

I don’t know of another city that has such an event, and that’s something we should be proud. So let’s celebrate Little League on Saturday, as it begins its 60th season in South Milwaukee.

Learn more about Opening Day here … see you on the parade route!

(And go AA River Cats! That’s my son’s team.)

Happy Anniversary Season: South Milwaukee Little League Accepting Player Applications

The South Milwaukee Little League turns 60 years young this year.

My son, Christian, has been a part of the program for two years now, and not only has he developed skills on the field, he is developing life skills too — skills like humility, perseverance and work ethic.

I’d encourage every South Milwaukee boy or girl to play.

Player applications are now being accepted, and tryouts are in March.

Little League, Big Memories

The South Milwaukee Little League AA season concluded Monday night with the Royals beating the Red Sox in the championship game. Not that the victor matters. It shouldn’t when you’re talking about 7- and 8-year old kids.

What matters at this level is that the kids learn the game in a positive environment with supportive coaches, parents and fans … and have some fun along the way.

The South Milwaukee Little League delivered that and more this season, and my summer is a bit emptier now that it’s over.

Christian, my 7-year-old, was a member of the AA Brewers this season, his first out of Rookie Ball, and he had a blast. So did his family – me included.

Now, winning helped. It’s always more fun when you win, and Christian’s team, led by Coach Bob and Coach Ken, went 11-2 before losing as a No. 2 seed in the tournament semifinals last week.

But my impression of the South Milwaukee Little League was not formed because of the success of his team. Rather, my positive – and, I’ll bet, lifelong – memories will come from the small moments that showed an innocent love for the game that too many of us lose over time.

I’ll remember Christian’s happiness with even the smallest of hits, including his two-out, two-strike game winner late in the season (which I had to celebrate over the phone, as I was out of town) …

His heartbreaking “it’s the end of the world” sadness at making an out (we’re still working with him on that) …

His little legs churning around the bases after a hit (surprisingly quickly, unlike his father) … and

Win or lose, his anticipation of post-game trips to the concession stand (where you can get a lot for $2).

The list of happy memories goes on, and includes the volunteer hours at the concession stand and sneaking up to the press box to run the scoreboard.

I’ll also cherish the time I got to spend with my father, sister and other family members as they, too, became regular and rabid Little League fans.

Of course, not all the memories will be positive. Too often, me included, parents and coaches get too wrapped up in a game being played 7- and 8-year-olds. Perspective can and does get lost. But thankfully those issues were few and far between, and they’ll retreat from my memory.

In their place will be moments like the end of a second-round tournament game between the Red Sox and Royals – the same two teams that would later meet in the finals.

The Brewers and their fans were waiting for this game to end so ours could start, and we had a chance to see first-hand as the Red Sox took a late lead, only to lose it in the bottom of the final inning on a game-winning hit.

I expected crushing disappointment from the Red Sox, to see a bunch of players sobbing into their hands and seeking the calm reassurance of mom. Instead, I saw elation, on both sides … as both teams, seconds after the last out was recorded, happily spilled out on the field and eagerly continued their tradition of racing around the bases after the game.

Smiling kids having fun, win or lose. Isn’t that how it’s supposed to be for these Boys (and Girls) of South Milwaukee Summer?

That’s how it was for my boy. And his dad.
