South Milwaukee Spring Cleanup Set For April 27

2011 cleanup smallUpdate: The South Milwaukee Public Library is offering paper shredding from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

The city’s annual Earth Day cleanup is Saturday, April 27, at various sites around town.

The details are essentially unchanged from last year, with the cleanup running from 9 a.m. to noon at most locations. A hot dog lunch is set for noon at City Hall.

Not sure where to help or how to start? I’ll put a plug in for the Friends of Oak Creek and the Mill Pond, which recently put this call out for volunteers …

We’ll meet down at Grant Park Beach house to sign in and pickup vest, gloves, bags and water.  If you have boots that would be great, bring an extra pair of socks or shoes in case you get wet.  If any students come from you classes, packs or groups, we’d like to have some responsible adults along also.  We start at 8:00am and work till 12 noon. Also planned for April 27: a drug “take-back day” sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and South Milwaukee Police Department. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day, police will be accepting, anonymously, unwanted or expired medicines.

200,000

That’s 200,000, as in the number of page views South Milwaukee Blog has tallied since I launched it in October of 2009.

The blog passed the milestone earlier today, and I want to thank you.

This website is nothing without its readers … and I appreciate your continued support. We may not agree on everything, or anything, but I still hope you find this website informative — a source of South Milwaukee news and information you can’t get anywhere else. I am excited about what the future holds for the blog. I hope you are too.

My ask: Please tell your family and friends about the site. And on to 300,000!

South Milwaukeean Tells Organ Donation Story

Fox 6 has touching story from South Milwaukee about the importance of organ donation. From it …

It was July 6th, 2005 when Vicki Maloney received that phone call, telling her Alyssa, who was 22 at the time, had been in a terrible car accident.

As Alyssa was on life support in the hospital, officials had to ask Maloney the difficult question about donating her daughter’s organs.

“We knew because of the life she led, very caring and giving, that that’s what she would’ve wanted to do,” Maloney said.

With April marking National Donate Life Month, Maloney is urging people to follow in her daughter’s footsteps and register to be a donor.

Flood Update: More Than 3.2 Inches So Far

Update: We hit the four-inch mark as of 7 a.m. Thursday, the Wastewater Treatment Facility reports …

A few updates on local flooding concerns …

  • The South Milwaukee Wastewater Treatment Facility reports the city had 3.23 inches of rain from Monday morning through about 1:30 on Tuesday. And there’s more coming overnight and Wednesday.
  • While Oak Creek was receding today — not sure what the added rain will do overnight, however — areas of concern continue to be Oak Creek Parkway near the high school railroad trestle and the Mill Pond.
  • The high school baseball field is flooded.
  • The city had also received a couple calls about water in basements … and a report of a basement wall collapse.

I also asked wastewater for an update on its operations, and thanks to Superintendent Andy Bakalarski for providing this …

The South Milwaukee Wastewater Treatment Facility has pumps deployed at the known trouble spots in the city, but at this time, there has not been a need to divert any of the wastewater in the system. At the treatment facility, the upgrade project has caused us to route the flows around the construction areas, but we are treating the wastewater to the best of our ability, while protecting the facility and the areas under construction.

Good news, for now.

The flood warning issued for Oak Creek in South Milwaukee has been cancelled.

Check out the National Weather Service bulletin here.

I hope things remain OK the next two days, with more rain in the forecast. Mitchell International reported more than 1.7 inches on Tuesday alone, according to WISN.

Walmart Opens Wednesday

Update: West Milwaukee’s new Walmart opens Wednesday, too.

Two and a half years after it was first proposed, the South Milwaukee Walmart opens Wednesday.

A few notes on the opening:

  • The new store will be open 24 hours, joining the Franklin, Greenfield and Sturtevant stores, among several others in the region, in that regard.
  • The store will include a Subway restaurant inside.
  • It will also sell beer, wine and spirits, as the South Milwaukee City Council approved its liquor license earlier this month. Sales will occur between 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • The store will also have a pharmacy (hours: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m Monday through Friday, 9 to 7 on Saturday and 10 to 6 on Sunday), in addition to groceries and general merchandise.
  • The store is also on Facebook.

Now, I know some readers of this blog will never shop at the store, for reasons made abundantly clear in the last 24 months. You have that right, and I understand your concerns. Some will shop there (including me, on occasion). You also have the right.

No matter where you stand, I hope we can all take a step back and see what the real-world impact of this store will, or won’t, be. Only then can we determine if this was the right decision for South Milwaukee or not.

More Health Services Coming To South Milwaukee Walgreens

The Business Journal has the story. From it …

In the Milwaukee area, Walgreens runs seven Take Care Clinics. They are in Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, South Milwaukee, Mequon, Brookfield and Waukesha.

The new services include assessment, treatment and management for chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and asthma, Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreens said Thursday.

Walgreens said it is introducing the service to address the nation’s physician shortage, aging population, growing prevalence of chronic diseases and the estimated 30 million people who are expected to gain insurance coverage in 2014 through the Affordable Care Act.

The Chicago Tribune has more details.

The South Milwaukee Walgreens is at 2985 S. Chicago Ave.

Caterpillar Layoffs: South Milwaukee Is Not Alone

Caterpillar is not just laying off 460 people at its Decatur, Ill., plant — it’s cutting those jobs permanently.

That’s according to various media reports, including this one from the Business Journal of Milwaukee and this one from Reuters.

Of course, the Caterpillar plant in South Milwaukee is facing up to 300 layoffs of its own, but they’re being called temporary. Let’s hope it stays that way.

Good Turnout, Informative Debate At South Milwaukee’s County Board Restructuring Meeting

An estimated 200 people attended Milwaukee County Supervisor Pat Jursik’s public information meeting on proposed Milwaukee County Board restructuring legislation — and I’m glad I was one of them.

I found the event informative, as it provided a deep dive on the Assembly and Senate bills calling for a referendum to reduce the role (and pay) of supervisors to part-time, reduce the board’s operating budget (i.e., staff) and transfer some powers to the county executive, among other changes.

The point-counterpoint debate between Rep. Joe Sanfelippo, the former supervisor and author of the Assembly bill, and Supervisor Theo Lipscomb Jr., who spoke out against most of the proposals in the legislation, was also lively and thought-provoking. And the question-and-answer/comment section added to the meeting as well.

I left the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center much more educated on this important issue — as did Pat, who pledged to take all that she heard into consideration in formulating her opinion on the issue of county board restructuring.

I credit Pat for once again showing her commitment to keeping constituents informed on key issues, and for taking a measured approach to her approach on this topic. I also thank the two panelists for the robust debate — and having the courage to sit in front of a room of 200 people and argue their case.

Both had reasonable and strong arguments for their positions, and I left feeling like the best solution — as it so often is — is somewhere in the middle … somewhere between the status quo and the sweeping changes proposed by Sanfelippo.

Of course, I’d like to know what you think. Here is the presentation from the meeting. Read it … and vote in my new poll!
