Cudahy Schools Interested In South Shore Y?

Update: The Business Journal has a few more details.

That’s according to Fox 6. From the report …

The plan was discussed at a school board meeting Monday, January 26th.

“While we are very excited about the potential for a new community center, we have to carry out due diligence to develop a plan and timeline and consider all possibilities. There is a lot of work that will need to be done prior to the end of February when the board will make a formal decision to move forward or not. First and foremost, we need to determine if the building is still available. We then need to explore all financial implications — both today and in the foreseeable future,” School District of Cudahy Superintendent Dr. Jim Heiden said.

I hope something comes of this. Either way, Saturday is shaping up to be a sad day for the South Shore.

The first thing I thought of when I heard the Y was closing, was “what about the pool.” My kid took swim classes there. I took swim classes through the Y. Living near rivers/streams and a large Great Lake, our children need to know how to respect bodies of water, learn to swim and avoid drowning.

If you go back into old records of the 1920’s drownings were a common occurrence and the community demanded pools be put into our public schools.

Gym and pool space are expensive to maintain, but vital to the health of our communities. I hope Cudahy can find a right fit for this property.

South Milwaukee Rec at the SM JH/SH has swim lessons.

  3. Anytime Fitness Cudahy is hosting a Y Membership Conversion weekend/drive for those displaced former Y members. Stop by AF Cudahy, 5879 S. Packard Ave. (next to Pick N Save) to take advantage of the special. AF Cudahy did an expansion and remodel in 2013 so the facility is quite larger than most people realize. Plus, they will also be the new home for the Silver Sneakers classes Monday, Wed. and Friday, 10:15-11am.

Mr. John, there is high demand for our pool, we have a very successful and active swim club and Rocket swim team/practices. My water aerobics class has been bumped a few times due to swim meets. The pool just isn’t available. It’s being used! Indeed, It’s a good problem to have! but a challenge, nonetheless.

They also don’t have open swim time, which includes a warmer pool for little kids, and a whirlpool for relaxing adults. We loved swimming with our nephew at the Y and will really miss it and all of the great staff and members we’ve come to know.
