Big Summerfest Ticket Giveaway At South Milwaukee Downtown Market

I’m happy to report the South Milwaukee Downtown Market is off to a great start in 2012.

With the outstanding weather the last couple of weeks, we’ve begun to really hit our stride, as more than 60 vendors selling produce, organics, arts, crafts, baked goods, dinner options, sweet treats and more gather from 3 to 7 p.m. at 11th and Milwaukee Avenues.

This week will be our biggest week yet.

That’s because Lake 94.5 FM is doing a two-hour live remote from 3 to 5 p.m., and during those hours the station is giving away a four-pack of Summerfest tickets every five minutes. You must be present to win.

Learn more at www.smarket.org. Summerfest runs June 27-July 1 and July 3-8.

Tell your family and friends, and we’ll see you there!

South Milwaukee PAC Announces 2012-13 Schedule

I’m a big fan of the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center. I hope you are too.

Such a first-class venue bringing in such a strong lineup of acts is something about which few communities our size can boast. And 2012-13 won’t be any different.

The SMPAC announced its acts for the new season last week. Check out the impressive lineup here.

The highlight? An appearance by the Vienna Boys Choir on Nov. 23. (I’m also looking forward to the appearance by John Gurda on Sept. 9 and up-and-coming country singer Katie Armiger on Oct. 4.)

Learn more about the series from this YouTube video by Director Chad Piechocki.

Season tickets are on sale now. Individual show tickets go on sale Aug. 6.

Direct Legislation Effort Update: Not Enough Valid Signatures

In April, I wrote about the effort by some local residents to use the direct legislation process to enact an ordinance requiring that all city capital projects costing more than $1 million be put before voters in a binding referendum.

To make this happen – and either compel the South Milwaukee City Council to pass the ordinance or at least call a referendum on the referendum requirement – the group needed 1,197 valid signatures, or 15% of the votes cast in the last gubernatorial election.

Well, the group turned in its signatures recently, and there aren’t enough.

That’s according to this letter sent from the city to Jim Leavens, one of the leaders of the direct legislation campaign.

The letter notes that the city found there were only 1,172 signatures submitted.

And not all of those signatures were deemed valid, either because they fell outside of the 60-day window necessary to obtain them, were missing key information, or other factors – including 17 sheets that were signed and dated by the signature collector before the dates accompanying the signatures themselves.

The group has 10 days to fix some of the “deficiencies,” and if 1,197 valid signatures are not presented within that timeframe, the city clerk will not forward the petition to the City Council.

I’ll keep you posted on what happens … and I reiterate my stance against the proposed city “spending cap.” You can see my argument in my previous post, but it boils down to this: The City Council is elected to make decisions like this, and putting major spending like this to a vote not only is unwieldy, costly and chilling to the prospects of necessary projects, it goes against the whole idea of representative government.

City leaders are up for election every two years. That’s the ultimate referendum.

Celebrating Memorial Day In South Milwaukee

Just a reminder that South Milwaukee’s annual Memorial Day parade starts at 10 a.m. on Monday.

The route begins at Divine Mercy’s 13th Avenue parish (the old St. Mary’s) and continues south on 13th to Milwaukee Avenue, east to 10th Avenue, then north to Veterans Memorial Park, where a ceremony will be held.

The event is presented by the South Milwaukee Veterans Council, Inc., a corporation of the five chartered veteran units in South Milwaukee: the American Legion, American Veterans, Catholic War Veterans, Polish Legion of American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Thanks to all of those groups for holding this special event, and thanks to all of our veterans (and active duty soldiers). Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers this weekend.

(One more note: I’ll be taking a few days off from blogging this Memorial Day weekend. Back on Monday!)

South Milwaukee (And Oak Creek’s) Own: Christine Bolender Honored At 128th Dinner

One of the events I look forward to attending each year is the 128th Air Refueling Wing Civic Dinner Dance. It’s a well-done remembrance of our armed services that always draws a big crowd from around the region.

Thursday’s event had a strong South Milwaukee connection. Former South Milwaukee State Sen. Jeff Plale was the master of ceremonies, and Christine Bolender was the guest of honor.

Bolender — the wife of the late Dick Bolender, the Oak Creek mayor who passed away in December — was born and raised in South Milwaukee and graduated from South Milwaukee High School in 1963. After attending Dick and attending the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, she spent 30 years teaching at Lakeview and Blakewood Elementary before retiring in 2005.

Thursday, she gave a wonderful speech recalling her time as “Mrs. Mayor,” giving a tearful tribute to her late husband.

Congratulations to her, and thanks to all of our military members, past and present. I am grateful for your service.

(One additional note: Next year’s dinner will honor someone from South Milwaukee.)

Celebrating Our Police And Citizen Heroes

Thank a police officer today … and those among us who help them do their jobs and make South Milwaukee a safer place to live.

The South Milwaukee Police Department and the City Council did just that Tuesday night, honoring a number of officers and citizens for their work saving lives and solving crimes.

It’s all a part of National Police Officers Week this week.

See a list of honorees, and their stories, here … and let’s all celebrate these everyday heroes. One example:

Mr. Joseph DeLong

Officer Mick Olson recommended Mr. DeLong for a Citizen Recognition Award for his action on February 17, 2012.

On February 17, 2012 Mr. DeLong was working as a United States Postal Carrier in the City of South Milwaukee.  While on his route Mr. DeLong observed three days of accumulated mail at a residence.  He felt this was unusual and notified his supervisor who then contacted SMPD.  Officers responded to the residence, forced entry into the residence under the community care taker role and located an elderly home owner on the floor of the residence.  The owner had fallen three days earlier and was unable to get up.  Because of Mr. DeLong’s actions this individual was able to get help when he needed it the most.

Although the Police Department has been called to residences by mail carriers in the past, this was the first time a resident was found in duress.  Mr. DeLong’s actions saved the resident’s life.

Stepping Up: Kohl’s Restores The Seven Bridges

The Seven Bridges are the Seven Bridges again — restored by a local company committed to the community.

Kohl’s Corp. invested thousands of dollars and brought forth dozens of employee volunteers this week to rebuild five of the Grant Park trail’s seven bridges. The end result: Rebirth of an iconic South Milwaukee landmark damaged by floods in 2008 and 2010.

Check out the Fox 6 story here. From it:

The project is part of Kohl’s Cares National Go Green Event.  The company provided the labor and thousands of dollars worth of materials needed to complete the task.

“It almost brings tears to my eyes.  It’s just beautiful,” said Milwaukee County Supervisor Pat Jursik, who was emotional when she saw the work being done Friday.  She represents the South Shore district.

“The seven bridges were damaged in the 100 years floods that happened in 2009 to 2010, and we’ve been struggling to get the money,” said Jursik.

“This is something that’s going to be here for future generations and I’m just touched,” said Milwaukee County Parks Director Sue Black.  “The people who are going to use this for the next decades are going to know that Kohl’s cared.”

The bridges will be ready for use this weekend. It’s been a long time coming, and it’s a worthy investment.

Thank you, Kohl’s.

Shepherd Express Honors South Milwaukee Blog

Since I launched it in October of 2009, and nearly 100,000 page views later, South Milwaukee Blog has been a labor of love.

Sometimes more labor than love, sometimes more love than labor, blogging is and will always remain a passion for me.

And while I certainly don’t do this to win awards, it is nice to see a third party (and others) recognize you for your work.

Such is the case with the Shepherd Express, which has named this blog one of two runners-up in the second-annual Best of Milwaukee Web Awards.

The category: Best Neighborhood Blog. The winner was Between the Bars, and joining this blog as runner-up was Cream City and Sugar.

See the story here.

Again, I don’t do this for pats on the back. But I’ll take it.

And ultimately none of this would be possible without you. Thank you for making South Milwaukee Blog what it has become — an online community gathering place that, with your help, will continue to thrive in the months and years to come.

Promising future, indeed.
