Thank you for reading!

Here are a few holiday reminders:

Free Falling? Magazine Offers A Rather Unflattering Portrayal Of Milwaukee … And Cudahy

The Atlantic magazine has a piece on the demise of the middle class in Milwaukee and its impact on the region — including inner ring suburbs like Cudahy.

Check out the story here.

I’d like to know what you think about the piece and its conclusions. I guess I take a  more optimistic view. Sure, the Milwaukee area has its problems, and income disparity, joblessness and poverty are among them. But I also see so many good things — positive signs — emerging.

I see hope.

Following Up On Reports Of Grant Park Poaching

South Milwaukee Police Chief Ann Wellens provided the following update to the reports of potential poaching in Grant Park.

Here is her email verbatim …

In order to clear up some of the rumors in the community I personally spoke with Game Warden Ben Mott this morning regarding the deer complaints in Grant Park.  The following is a summary of our conversation:

  • SMPD/Milw County Park notified the DNR of a gut pile (in the compose pile) by the tennis court area.  Officer Olson responded and had a description of a vehicle.  Officer Olson contacted neighboring law enforcement agencies and determined a resident of SM had a deer (struck by a car) tagged in the City of Oak Creek.  Officer Olson contacted this subject and interviewed this subject.  The subject verified the deer was struck by a car in Oak Creek, was tagged by Oak Creek PD, he brought the deer to Grant Park to clean (he didn’t want the mess at his residence – and knew the animals would eat the guts), and then took the deer to the butcher in Oak Creek.  Officer Olson and Investigator Hesse went to the butcher to verify the deer had a tag.  Investigator Hesse examined the deer and stated the front legs were broken (consistent with being struck by a vehicle).
  • SMPD notified the DNR of a deer in the park missing it’s head.  The DNR was aware of this as Game Warden Mott had taken the head of the deer (buck).  Game Warden Mott stated he could not be certain how this deer died but suspected it could have been shot.  He said the body was very badly mauled by coyotes and he could not verify if the deer was sick, injured or shot.  He stated he left the body there for the animals to eat.
  • 3rd & Marquette (behind the pump house) SMPD notified the DNR of a carcass (spine and rib cage) found at this location.  There is no way to determine where this deer came from (the park or someplace else).  Game Warden Mott assumed this was a buck as the head was missing.
  • Hawthorne Ave – SMPD notified DNR of a deer carcass laying in the ravine.
  • There was a deer struck by a car on Nicholson Avenue – OCPD responded and tagged the deer.  The driver of the vehicle did not want the deer.  An off duty South Milwaukee Officer was there and asked if he could have the deer which the driver told him yes.  This was completely legal.

Game Warden Mott stated during/after the 9 day gun season it is common to find deer carcasses in parks, on the road side, etc. as hunters tend to dispose of the carcasses in this manner.  He said some hunters do not want to bring home the “remains” and put them in their garbage or they are too lazy to go to the dump.  He stated it is not unusual to find carcasses not properly disposed of.

Game Warden Mott also stated he has been in the park conducting surveillance and has found citizens in the park shinning deer he has not seen any evidence of poachers.  He stated he does not approach the citizens shinning because it is not illegal to shine them unless it is after 10pm.  In order to check them out he would have to see some other type of violation.  One individual he found shinning was a County Park worker.

Game Warden Mott has offered to meet with the Friends of Grant Park to answer their questions.  I have notified Investigator Mike Hill (Crime Prevention Officer who attends these meetings) to coordinate this meeting.

A big thanks to Chief Wellens and her department for staying on top of this. I’ll keep you posted.

Poaching In Grant Park?

I must admit, this WISN story is quite disturbing …

Apparently, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is investigating potential poaching of deer at Grant Park.

I really hope it’s not true. Grant Park is such a special place and community icon. You hate to see anything like this spoil it.

What’s New With The Farmers’ Market? A Lot … Including Two Indoor Christmas Markets

The South Milwaukee Downtown Market remains a labor of love for me — a chance to take an active role in revitalizing our downtown while at the same time delivering a fun and unique community event.

And our momentum continues.

Following a successful third summer season, we’re holding a pair of indoor Christmas Markets at Caterpillar on back-to-back Saturdays in December.

The markets are planned for Dec. 3 and 10 inside Caterpillar’s Heritage Building and museum, 1970 10th Ave. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.

The events will feature more than 40 regular market vendors – and some new faces – selling arts, crafts, organics, baked goods and other prepared food. Live Christmas music from local acts that played the summer markets is also planned.

The newly remodeled and expanded History Museum, located inside the Caterpillar Heritage Building, will also be open during both markets, giving customers a chance to experience this one-of-a-kind South Milwaukee attraction.

We’re also starting the summer 2012 season a bit earlier, the Downtown Market Committee decided at its meeting on Monday.

Markets will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. every Thursday from May 24 to Oct. 11 on and around 11th Avenue south of Milwaukee Avenue. This is the earliest the market has opened since its inception in 2009, and the 21-week season is its longest to date.

Learn more about the market at our website: www.smdowntownmarket.org.

And I’ll keep you posted as the Christmas Markets and summer season draw nearer.

Going Pink Raises Big Green

South Milwaukee raised $7,142.91 as part of its “Going Pink” efforts to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

You’ll recall the effort included the sale of specially designed t-shirts and other activities across the city and school district spearheaded by South Milwaukee students, Police Chief Ann Wellens and others.

Congratulations on the success, and thanks to everyone who played a role in this!

The money raised this year is almost twice as much as what was raised in 2010.

Do Your Part To Keep It Clean: Oak Creek Watercourse Cleanup Set For Oct. 15

I’ve taken part in the last few Oak Creek cleanups, and, unfortunately, there never seems to be a shortage of trash along the banks of the creek. Fortunately, there are people dedicated to maintaining and improving this South Milwaukee jewel.

I hope you can join the Friends of the Mill Pond and Oak Creek Watercourse for the group’s annual fall cleanup set on Saturday, Oct. 15. Cleanup is from 8 a.m. to noon. Meet at South Milwaukee High School parking lot to receive vests, gloves, bags and water.

The cleanup will address Oak Creek from North Chicago Avenue west to Rawson. Lunch will be provided at the Mill Pond warming house.

I hope to see you there!

VISIT (South) Milwaukee: City To Join Convention And Visitors Bureau

One thing our city doesn’t do well is marketing.

We have lots to promote. Affordable housing. Clean, safe streets. First-class schools. Great community events. An abundance of parkland. Unique attractions and retailers. A downtown ready for rebirth.

We have a good story to tell. I just wish more people knew it.

So when I heard more about VISIT Milwaukee, it became pretty clear to me that we need to join this organization, which is the area’s convention and visitors bureau. Especially when it costs just $495 each year.

And we are. The City Council unanimously supported my motion in September to join VISIT Milwaukee.

For the annual fee (which will be half funded by the South Milwaukee Downtown Market), we get to include city-sponsored events and attractions in VISIT Milwaukee’s print publications and on its website. We also get access to marketing best practices through networking and education events sponsored by the organization, among other benefits.

In other words, this effort will help us better tell the South Milwaukee story to literally tens of thousands of new people each month. It’s a good one to tell.

The Future Of Jazz: Workshop Welcomes Local Students At SMPAC

The South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center certainly has a strong lineup of performers, one that separates it from other community arts centers. It also has a strong educational component — giving local students chances to get an inside look at the musicians that perform there.

That was the case again this week, as more than 100 local students attended a jazz workshop by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which performed to rave reviews at the SMPAC on Sunday night.

Check out the Fox 6 story here.

And here is my posting about the visit by Alpin Hong in the spring.
