One more cool event happening at the park …
From South Shore Supervisor Pat Jursik’s new e-newsletter:
A BioBlitz is a scientific “race”– a 24-hour species count by a team of scientists and surveyors that produces scientifically valid data, as well as interesting discoveries and public education about the biodiversity that exists in an urban setting. You can read and hear two WUWM stories about Milwaukee’s first-ever BioBlitz here and here. The first BioBlitz (run by MPM at Schlitz Audubon Center) counted 820 species in 24 hours, identified several Federal or State-listed endangered species that Audubon didn’t know it had onsite, as well as discovered an invasive Asian worm that could, if left unchecked, devastate the Audubon Center’s landscape.
The Grant Park BioBlitz will take place June 10-11, 2016 and the public will be welcomed to base camp from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday to meet the scientists, participate in activities with MPM educators, and watch the action. Grant Park was specifically selected because of the variety of landscapes and habitats it holds. More information forthcoming.

Mark your calendars for Sunday, November 29 … and be sure to check out the tree lighting.
Fireworks are back!
That is thanks to our sponsors: Guardian Credit Union and Max A. Sass & Sons Funeral and Cremation Service. I am so appreciative of them for their continued support of community events. Without partners like this, we could not do what we’re doing.
We’ll see you the Sunday after Thanksgiving!

My next Meet the Mayor session is this Saturday, November 14, at one of the more unique properties downtown.
It’s the Fenno building, 916 Milwaukee Ave.
This building is home to a variety of small businesses — including a few that I bet you didn’t know about: Memory Lane Antiques and Grandma’s Attic, Acetime Disc Golf, Dynamic Sign and Graphix, Styled Aesthetic, Wolf’s Dry Cleaners and more.
Be sure to stop by between 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and, check out the local businesses and discuss what’s on your mind.
My door is open!

From the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center … tickets are still available!
The South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center is proud to present the Hot Club of San Francisco: Cinema Vivant. Be transported into the 1930s when gypsy caravans would set up camps outside of town and lure locals out for an evening of music and movies, which flickered to life on the side of a barn. Gypsy musicians would play guitars and fiddles, matching every movement on the screen with virtuosity, passion and humor. The Hot Club of San Francisco (HCSF) celebrates the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli featuring lead guitarist and HCSF founder Paul Mehling, the violin of two time Grammy Award winner Evan Price and a swinging rhythm section: Sam Rocha, Isabelle Fontaine, and Jordan Samuels.

One event we were proud to add to the list of Rocketober activities last year: a downtown trick-or-treating event.
It was a hit. Hundreds of families took part, supporting local businesses while collecting some candy along the way. Well, it’s back in 2015 — bigger and better than ever.
Nearly 40 businesses and institutions are taking part this time, and you can see the full list in the flyer posted above. Be sure to stop at them all from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and visit Moran’s Pub for a raffle drawing afterwards. Then head to the Mill Pond Zombie House a few blocks away, or the Human Concerns Haunted House.
(Check out the full list of Rocketober events here.)
Thanks so much to Julie Arnold from Lovenote Creative and James Moran from Moran’s Pub for organizing this year’s trick or treating. This should be a lot of fun.
Be sure to use this flyer as you travel to the various businesses. Either print it, or pick one up at a participating location.
See you Saturday!

Go Rockets!
Join me as we kick off Rocketober with Homecoming festivities this weekend – starting with the return of the Homecoming parade, pep rally and bonfire Thursday night.
The parade starts at 6 p.m. and runs from the corner of 15th Avenue and Maple Street north to Oak Creek Parkway, where the pep rally and bonfire will take place at the baseball diamond.
Then it’s game time on Friday, as South Milwaukee hosts Brown Deer at 7 p.m. at Spaltholz Field.
Be sure to get to 15th Avenue and cheer on the school and other local organizations taking part in the parade. (And look for me and my family in the fire truck.)
Also on the Rocketober calendar this weekend is …
Check out a full Rocketober schedule here … and be sure to check out these great community events.

There is lots of economic development happening in the South Shore, and much more to come.
Local leaders (me included) will have a chance to tell that story at the fourth-annual South Shore Option event set for Wednesday, October 14, at the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center.
The meeting — presented by the South Shore Chamber of Commerce — begins at 6 p.m.
It will feature presentations from representatives from South Milwaukee, Cudahy, Oak Creek and St. Francis, including summaries of recent developments, a look at what’s on the horizon and development opportunities.
Thanks to the chamber for driving this event, and to Milwaukee County Supervisor Patricia Jursik for creating the concept and leading in executing the first several South Shore Option gatherings.
We need to be more vocal about economic development in the South Shore. We have a good story to tell, and it’s getting better as it’s being written, especially in South Milwaukee. I’m excited to be a part of it.
