Just a quick shout out to organizers and supporters of two great events on Saturday that showed how our community steps up around the holidays.
First, thanks to Walmart for making Christmas a little merrier for eight local families through the Shop with a Cop program. And thanks to the South Milwaukee Police Department for stepping up to bring this program to our city. Our city workers give back to the community they serve, and that’s inspiring to see.
Also, thanks to everyone who helped put on the South Milwaukee Christmas Market on Saturday, for South Milwaukee High School for serving as welcome hosts. With more than 80 vendors, this was the biggest and best indoor market yet.
Check out more photos from both events on my mayoral Facebook page.

The South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center has coined this Bold and Brassy Week, with three contrasting styles of brass performances planned at two local venues.
First, Extra Crispy Brass Band will be at the South Milwaukee Downtown Market this Thursday, September 17. This is a New Orleans-style Brass group with high energy and an old-school, New Orleans swing style. They will be performing from 5 to 7 p.m.
Then, the PAC kicks off its 2015-16 season with a show by Boston Brass at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 19.
Boston Brass is internationally regarded ensemble whose members have performed with the world’s top orchestras and recording artists, and have earned a reputation for delivering highly entertaining concerts with their delightful sense of humor. It’s an audience participation event, as patrons can vote on their favorite songs to be played in the second half of show.
Also, be sure to stop by the pre-show social event starting at 6:30.
For sale will be light snacks, and there will be pre-show entertainment by saxophone player Aaron Gardner and guitarist Steve Peplin, a jazz improv duo.
Tickets are still available to Boston Brass. Learn more here.

Please mark your calendars … and take steps to becoming healthier in the year ahead. (Me included.)
Check out Health Fair flyer here. Here is a flyer for the run/walk.
The South Milwaukee Downtown Market has announced its July music lineup, and it’s as strong as ever.
Many communities offer live music, most several weeks during the summer. Well, South Milwaukee has live music downtown every week from late May through early October. Just sayin’.
Check out the press release here, and check out some of these terrific acts every Thursday evening at the market.
In other words, come for the food, stay for the music.

Happy to kick off another “12 Days of South Milwaukee Christmas” series — an annual look at some of our best local shopping options …
And I start with information on a couple big “shop local” events this Saturday.
First, there is the annual South Milwaukee Christmas Market, set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at South Milwaukee High School. It’s a full house once again, with more than 60 vendors selling terrific locally made gift items. Live music is also scheduled throughout the day.
Learn more on the market Facebook page.
I also want to call out a special event presented by the South Shore Chamber of Commerce. Check out the flyer above, and like their Facebook page for more.
And shop local!
The second (rescheduled) Guardian Credit Union Movie in the Market is this Thursday … and it’s a big one.
The flick: the Disney hit “Frozen.”
Showtime is around 7 p.m., and it follows two other special performances: the South Milwaukee Rocket Band drumline and a South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center concert featuring the Jeannine Rivers Group, a jazz and R&B band. I’m also holding a Meet the Mayor session with school leaders from 4 to 6.
Guardian is offering free popcorn. And bring your lawn chairs.
Hope to see you there!
(And mark your calendars for the final Guardian movie. “Hocus Pocus” plays on Thursday, Oct. 9, as part of the market’s season-ending Fall Family Festival event. Showtime is around 6:30 p.m.)
I can hear “Let it Go” running through my head already …
We have a new date for the Guardian Credit Union Movie in the Market showing of “Frozen.”
It’s Thursday, Sept. 25, following the South Milwaukee Downtown Market, around 7 p.m. This means it will done by in plenty of time to get the kids (including mine) to bed for school the next day.
The movie was cancelled last month due to the threat of inclement weather.
Mark your calendars … and get ready to show off those Anna and Elsa dresses.
More than 20 health-related vendors are expected at the South Milwaukee Downtown Market’s annual Health Fair, set for this Thursday, Sept. 4. Hours are 3 to 7 p.m.
The event is presented by South Shore Family Chiropractic.

From the South Milwaukee Downtown Market Facebook page …
Today’s farmers’ market and the Guardian Credit Union Movie in the Market this evening are cancelled due to storms. Sorry for any inconvenience, but we’ll see you next week. And stay tuned for more details on a makeup date for the movie.
Please help spread the word, and I’ll keep you posted.
Sorry, “Frozen” fans.
The South Milwaukee Downtown Market wants to hear from you.
Let the market committee know more about why you visit (or don’t) and what you do when you’re there. The information is invaluable as the committee looks to improve upon what I say is already a great thing.
Take the survey here. Thanks for your help!

From all reports, the filming of the “Around the Corner” feature on South Milwaukee is going really well.
From Azteca Restaurant to the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center to Grant Park, McGivern and his crew have been all over the city this week, and it’s great to have them.
I can’t wait to see the episode when it airs next February. It should tell a great story.
But first things first: There’s still one more day of filming left. Want to check it out? Stop by the South Milwaukee Downtown Market when it opens at 3 p.m. on Thursday and say hi. It’s good timing for McGivern, as the market returns to its new-and-improved 1tth Avenue location … with a giveaway of market bags to attendees.
Learn more here, and stay tuned for more on the “Around the Corner” premiere event at the SMPAC in February.

I’m excited about the return of outdoor movies to downtown South Milwaukee — and even more excited now I know the films that will be showing.
Guardian Credit Union — which has graciously donated to make this event happen — has chosen three great titles for the Thursday evening flicks following the South Milwaukee Downtown Market …
So, mark your calendars, and stay tuned for more information as the movies get closer.
(FYI: Don’t remember “Hocus Pocus”? Here is more information on what sounds like a fun family-friendly Halloween movie, which caps off the market’s annual season-ending Fall Family Festival event.)
I love Thursdays during the summer.
The South Milwaukee Downtown Market opens its sixth season today, and I hope to see you there.
Hours are 3 to 7 p.m. at its new, temporary location at 12th and Milwaukee Avenue (until the 11th Avenue construction project is complete in July).
More than 50 vendors are expected selling organics, arts, crafts, baked good, prepared foods and more.
