Local Growth: Littlest Flowers Center For Achievement

Peggy image image 7  image 4 image 6

Let’s welcome our newest local business: Littlest Flowers Center for Achievement.

From owner Peggy Clark, who is replacing her current daycare with this one in a former medical office building at 1725 College Ave. …

Littlest Flowers Center For Achievement officially opened November 30, 2015. Our goal is to bring a child-centered, play-based learning environment.  We are family centered and actively involve the whole family in the learning experience! We are very proud to build our future here in South Milwaukee!

I got a tour recently, and it’s easy to see the significant investment Peggy has made in making the space welcoming and functional for children from six weeks to 12 years old. She is looking to cap enrollment at 50 to keep the teacher-to-child ratio low.

Thanks for investing in South Milwaukee, Peggy and Littlest Flowers.

Feasting On A South Milwaukee Holiday Tradition

What a night.

I can’t thank the South Milwaukee Music Parents for asking my wife and I to serve as Ladye and Lorde of this year’s Ye Olde Christmas Feaste.

This is the 36th year, and I can’t think of a more cherished local holiday tradition. It was an honor to be a small part of it.

Congratulations to everyone helps make the two shows this weekend happen — from the student musicians and performers to the student chefs and servers, and the adults who lead them.

I toast you all!

Power Restored For Thousands Of South Milwaukeeans

It looks like power is back on for the thousands of South Milwaukee and Oak Creek residents who were in the dark this evening.

Around 5 p.m., more than 6,300 customers in Oak Creek and South Milwaukee lost power, according to the We Energies outage map.

A downed branch apparently caused the outage, according to WISN.

Also check out coverage from Fox 6 and TMJ4.

Fraud Alert: Scary Scam Alleges Abduction

From the South Milwaukee Police Department …

SMPD has received some reports from citizens who are being called by an unknown person claiming that a relative of the citizen has been in an accident and is now being held against their will by the caller and his associates. The caller threatens bodily harm to the person they claim to be holding if the citizen does not produce money or if they hang up the phone.

The scammer …tries to keep the citizen on the phone with them while directing them to obtain cash and bring it to a specific drop off location. Many times the scammer will be vague in their description of the relative they claim to have abducted (they will give vague physical characteristics and/or vehicle) which then causes the citizen to fill in information. This makes it appear that the suspect/caller knows details about that relative. In the reports that we have taken on incidents of this type the relative who was alleged to have been held hostage was contacted and found to be fine, never abducted, and knew nothing about any accident or situation.

This is not a new scam and is one that has been seen in many jurisdictions. If you receive a call of this type, please contact the police. Calls have been reported to have come in to both cell phones as well as land line phones.

Shopping With A Cop, And Shopping Local

Just a quick shout out to organizers and supporters of two great events on Saturday that showed how our community steps up around the holidays.

First, thanks to Walmart for making Christmas a little merrier for eight local families through the Shop with a Cop program. And thanks to the South Milwaukee Police Department for stepping up to bring this program to our city. Our city workers give back to the community they serve, and that’s inspiring to see.

Also, thanks to everyone who helped put on the South Milwaukee Christmas Market on Saturday, for South Milwaukee High School for serving as welcome hosts. With more than 80 vendors, this was the biggest and best indoor market yet.

Check out more photos from both events on my mayoral Facebook page.

MEARS Online Auctions is one of my favorite local business.

What Troy has done with the former St. Mary’s Hall is amazing — you have to see it to believe it. And you have that chance on Saturday.

That is when MEARS is holding its Autograph Expo, with a special appearance by Henry Winkler.

More details here … and be sure stop by and grab a unique Christmas gift at one of the most unique (and coolest) businesses in the area.

Council Passes 2016 City Budget

It’s the most important thing we do every year, and I’m proud of the work done by so many to craft the 2016 city budget — one that allows us to maintain our city services in some really difficult times.

The South Milwaukee City Council approved the budget, 8-0, at its meeting on Tuesday night.

You can see the budget here, and you can read more about the budget in my previous post, including some much-needed context around the levy increase.

Tax bills are expected to go out next week, reflecting a 5.1% increase in city the tax rate, from $8.39 per $1,000 of assessed value to $8.82. Recognizing that no two circumstances are exactly alike, here is how the budget will impact your tax bill …

  • For the owner of a hypothetical home assessed at $160,000, the city portion of your taxes would go up $69.
  • Your overall tax bill (including all taxing entities) would increase $90.

Giving Back This Holiday Season

On this Giving Tuesday, here’s another potential local gift this holiday: Give to one of South Milwaukee’s terrific charities or organizations.

There are too many to list here, obviously, but I’ll offer a few …

Or donate some toys that the Brooks family will take to area homeless and domestic violence shelters on Christmas Eve. (We are doing this for the third straight year this year; if you can donate money or new toys, please comment below or email me at erikbrooks32@gmail.com).

In other words, there are plenty of ways to give this holiday season. Please consider doing so.
