Season Wrapups: Wrestling, Basketball

Correction: An earlier version of this post had the girls’ basketball team losing in a regional. That was incorect. They play at Whitnall in a WIAA regional at 7 p.m. Friday. My apologies.

The seasons are over for the South Milwaukee wrestling and boys’ basketball teams. Here’s a quick look at how they finished …

  • Wrestling. Five Rockets made the WIAA state tournament, and congratulations to Tom Mitchell, who finished fifth at 195 pounds. Also competing were Calvin Shilling (152 pounds), Tanner Dorangrichia (160), Ben Zbikowski (170), and Josh Wilkowski (182). See full results here. Congratulations to all five wrestlers and to coach Shilling’s team, which had a great season, including a regional championship.
  • Boys’ basketball. The South Milwaukee boys’ basketball team lost in the WIAA regionals, 48-45, to Whitnall, after beating Cudahy. South Milwaukee finished the year 8-14. Get results and stats here.

Congratulations to all the Rocket sports teams!

South Milwaukee School District Health & Physical Education Department is proud to announce the final count collected during the annual month of February RED OUT/Jump Rope for Heart campaign.

Millions of Americans live with heart disease, stroke or a cardiovascular condition. Your donations will help save and improve lives with research, education and emergency care.

Mixing Sand And Salt

Add South Milwaukee to the list communities dealing with a shortage of road salt.

The Street Department is reporting that “our salt supply has dwindled to the point that we will be adding sand in the mix and reducing spread rates to stretch our supply as much as possible.  Local vendors do not have additional salt available.”

I’ll keep you posted.

And, as always, I ask for your patience when it comes to snow and ice removal. This has been a historically bad winter, and our street crews have had to work extremely hard (at all hours and some holidays) to keep the roads clear. I thank them for their hard work … including ahead of time for this weekend, as more snow moves in.

John McGivern Stops In Cudahy

The latest community to be featured in John McGivern’s “Around the Corner” is our neighbor to the north.

It’s definitely worth a watch. See it here.

From the setup on MPTV …

As John Gurda put it, some communities bring home the bacon, but Cudahy makes the bacon! It was true when Patrick Cudahy put this town on the map – literally – and it’s still true today. Speaking of bacon, know what else John McGivern loves about Cudahy? It offers some of the best scenery and pastimes that Wisconsin has to offer. Trap shooting, archery, bird watching, golf and some of the best trails along Lake Michigan all co-exist in Sheridan Park. And speaking of one-of-a-kind attractions, wait until you see Dretska’s! It’s so great! And speaking of great, the art in Rick Serocki’s yard is just that. Enough speaking! Start watching. Like us, you won’t be able to resist this place that was once known as “Porkapolis!

Now, we need to get McGivern to South Milwaukee!
