Homecoming Defeat: South Milwaukee Falls To Pewaukee

South Milwaukee’s bid at perfection is over — but its season far from done.

Pewaukee rolled past the Rockets, 42-17, Friday night, dropping South Milwaukee to 7-1 as they prepare for the Woodland Conference championship game next week and then the WIAA playoffs.

Here is the game story. From it:

South Milwaukee coach John Galewski said his team ran into tough defense in the second half that the Rockets just couldn’t crack.

“We couldn’t run the ball,” he said. “Their defensive line is really good, and we knew that. We had some big plays in the first half, but their defensive line really stepped it up in the second half. I think that made a lot of difference.”

The Pirates next play Brown Deer before beginning the playoffs, while South Milwaukee travels to Greendale on Thursday to play for the conference championship against the undefeated Panthers.

“We go to Greendale to play for the championship,” said Galewski. “The kids played hard tonight. This really doesn’t change any of our goals. We are in the championship game next week Thursday against Greendale, and we’ll take our chances there, and we’ll have our hands full again.”

Here is coverage from WISN.

The Rocket Marching Band has had a successful competition season this Fall. Their season started with a 3rd place finish in AAA band competition at Waukesha South on September 28th. Back-to-back competitions were held October 5 at Greendale and October 6 at Wisconsin Lutheran High School, where the Rocket Marching Band earned their highest score in competition ever at Greendale, and finished in 2nd place at both competitions.  This year’s show, How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse, is a favorite among audiences.  Their full competition show will be performed at the last home football game for Homecoming on October 11th, followed by a final competitive performance at the WSMA State Marching Band competition at UW-Whitewater on Saturday, October 19th.  The performance time at Whitewater is 6:00pm.  Details on admission fees and band schedules are available at the WSMA website.

ALY PINKOS (2010)

TREY McKINNEY-JONES (2008)

Trey took part in the Milwaukee Bucks Fan Fest last Saturday and played in the 24 minute scrimmage. Trey was 0-2 from the field, but pulled down 5 rebounds and had an assist and showed that he can certainly play in the league. Anyone want to guess who the last player (long after any other player was out there) was out on the court after the scrimmage ended signing autographs? Yep, that would be Trey. A Bucks person had to walk up to get him to stop signing and head back to the locker room, otherwise Trey might have been there for 20 more minutes.

Guest Blog: County Supervisor Pat Jursik Provides Budget Insights

I asked South Shore Supervisor Pat Jursik for her thoughts on the county executive’s proposed budget, and I just received the following message. A big thank you to Supervisor Jursik for doing this — and continuing to keep her constituents informed on key issues. One note from her information: It looks like Grobschmidt Pool is not on the chopping block. For now.

The County Executives’s budget proposes a no tax levy increase budget.  Since I agree that our local property taxes are too high and too many services are supported via property taxes, I always appreciate this starting point.  Milwaukee County is still dealing with a 15 million dollar deficit this year and this will again be a budget that has limited ability to address many deferred issues of maintenance.  Much of the deficit is caused by paying legacy (retirees) pension and health benefits, promises that were made dating back into the 1970s.

Since I sit on the Finance Committee, I will have a front seat to both the review and amendment of this proposed budget.  Here are some of the issues that the Finance Committee will be facing in the 2014 budget:

Sheriff:  This department experiences the greatest change.  Like last year, the county executive is proposing that parks be patrolled by the local police with money awarded to local department.  This will eliminate over 30 positions.  Milwaukee gets the largest payment and our local cities would each see about $10,000.  While I opposed this last year, I was disappointed in the actual hours our parks received from the Sheriff.  Our local police departments still provide the primary response to the parks in the south shore.  I will re-examine this in light of the realities of services provided. Several functions that were once under the Sheriff’s Dept. are being shifted to other departments.  This includes Emergency Management, Training Academy, and House of Correction taking on some functions once administered in the Sheriff’s Dept.  The House of Correction is now run by a Superintendent, Michael Haffeman.  I toured the House in September and was impressed with the programs given the short turn around time provided.

Transit:  The good news is no bus service reductions are proposed.  I have had to fight many battles to keep bus service in South Milwaukee in past years.  The main change is a $1.00 reduction in the fares for para-transit riders, disabled users.  A mistake was made in preparing the budget and this actually causes the budged to be 1.5 million out of balance.  The county executive is proposing use of contingency funds to make up this deficit, i.e. reduce the money he put into contingency and shift it to cover this mistake.

Parks:  Even though the Parks Interim Director, John Dargle, stated in Parks Committee that Grobschkmidt Pool was to be closed, it is not shown in the proposed budget.  The only closures detailed are the two indoor pools, Pulaski and Noyes.  I will continue to watch this South Milwaukee amenity.  There are no significant changes to our Parks Dept. except that the county executive is proposing the sale of O’Donnell Square to Northwestern Mutual.  I am highly critical of placing this item in the budget.  The county executive has not done his homework on this and has failed to address significant issues surrounding the users of O’Donnell.  Northwestern Mutual is an outstanding corporate citizen, and this company should not be treated in this manner by the executive’s office.  I want to make it clear going forward that any issues regarding this parking garage do not in any way reflect on this great company.  My proposal is to completely remove the O’Donnell sale from this budget.  Many stake holders must be considered in addressing lake front parking, Summerfest, Milwaukee Art Museum, War Memorial, Betty Brinn Children’s Museum, Coast Restaurant just to name a few without the regular park users and week day business users.

Behavioral Health:  The county executive’s budget continues to plan the redesign of our mental health services.  Significant new money is put into community services as a means of down-sizing the hospital enrollments.  A new Crisis Service Coordinator is created to manage new initiatives.  A Crisis Mobile Team is also new and will work directly with Police Officers on emergency commitments.  A second clinic is created on the Southside to provide community care as an alternate to emergency detentions.  I largely support the direction of these initiatives.  This redesign will cause many job losses in the health fields and will prove to be an adjustment for many workers.  This is always a difficult issue to deal with.

Capital Improvements:  We will see some improvements to Layton Avenue including the intersection of Whitnall and also Pennsylvania.  Kelly Center will get a new front door.  There is some on going maintenance projects for parks and highways although no large projects for our district.  There will be continued funding for Noise Abatement at the airport to cover some 700 affected properties,.  The War Memorial will continue with major capital repairs and the Milwaukee Art Museum will embark on a new project to enhance the museum, these are the most exciting new projects.  The projects were made possible by the new agreements that the board forged with these two institutions.

There are many other areas of the budget that have not been addressed in this short article but will be reviewed.  The public hearing on the budget is November 4 at 4:00 p.m. at the War Memorial Center.    I am always interested in hearing from constituents on these issues:  278-4231 or patricia.jursik@milwcnty.com

On To 7-0: Rockets Dominate St. Francis

Update: The win also clinched the Woodland East title for South Milwaukee … and set up a showdown with undefeated Greendale for the inaugural conference title game on Oct. 18.

From the start, this one wasn’t much of a contest.

Ian Pribyl had five — five! — first-half touchdowns and finished with 164 yards on 13 carries to lead South Milwaukee past St. Francis, 42-13, Friday night and stay unbeaten at 7-0.

More details here.

I was there for the first couple quarters — did some campaigning beforehand — and it was an impressive performance on both sides of the ball. If the Rockets can play like that, they will make some serious noise in the WIAA playoffs, which begin October 25-26.

Next up, however: Pewaukee for Homecoming week. Gametime is 7 p.m. on Friday. Vote here to make it WISN’s Operation Football Game of the Week — and help it close the huge gap with the clubhouse leader (Franklin and Kenosha Indian Trail).

One other note: Please keep St. Francis receiver Brady Wieland in your prayers. Friday, he took a big hit on a pass over the middle in the second quarter and laid motionless on the field for more than 10 minutes before being taken to the hospital. It was a stark reminder about how dangerous this game can be.

I’m Running For Mayor In April … And Humbly Ask For Your Vote

Fresh ideas for South Milwaukee’s future. That’s what I pledge to deliver if I am elected mayor this April.

I humbly ask for your vote.

I announced my candidacy this morning, and I am officially breaking the news here because this platform is one example of my commitment to delivering new ideas and new solutions for the issues facing South Milwaukee.

I launched South Milwaukee Blog to address a need to improve communications – a commitment that I carry through as part of my mayoral platform. We need to do a better job telling our story to our neighbors and prospective residents, businesses and visitors and keeping neighbors informed on key issues.

But that’s just the start. Fixing downtown is job No. 1. And my plan is straightforward: Develop a plan. Then work the plan.

Today, if you ask 20 people what the vision is for downtown, you get 20 different answers. We need a single, community-generated and community-supported plan for our city center – something all of South Milwaukee can rally around in restoring vitality to our struggling downtown. That plan demands short-, medium- and long-term objectives … then we need to make a commitment to achieving those goals.

I don’t pretend to have all the answers here. But there are plenty of smart people who do – and plenty of best practices upon which we can draw. We need to tap those ideas and bring them to life, devoting renewed energy and focus to this critical issue.

My platform includes more than improved communications and a downtown action plan. It also calls for investments in economic development, city services, efficiency and infrastructures. I also want to see increased investment in our city attractions, doubling down to ensure the long-term future of the South Milwaukee Downtown Market, Mill Pond and more.

You can learn much more about my campaign on my website: www.brooksformayor.org., or on Facebook (Facebook.com/brooksformayor) and Twitter (#brooksformayor). And here is the press release I’ll be sending out.

I encourage you to read more about me and my vision, and I appreciate any support you can provide for my campaign.

I love South Milwaukee, I am anchored in this community, and I am excited about the future of this city. Please join me in helping shape that future on April 1.

Council Meeting Recap: Rain Barrels, Recycling And More

A quick summary from Tuesday’s South Milwaukee City Council meeting …

  • The council voted 7-1 to give “first reading” to an ordinance regulating the use of rain barrels, including regulating their capacity (55 gallons or less), function (for use only for watering flowers, gardens or grass), number (no more than two for single-family and duplex homeowners, for instance), location (to be located only in side or backyards and at least 12 feet from any neighbor’s structure) and appearance (requiring various aesthetic treatments), among other technical wording. I voted no. Why? For years, we have had no rain barrel ordinance on the books — and, using a literal reading of our code, one could argue rain barrels were illegal because our ordinance banned all “cisterns,” with little elaboration. I pushed for a way to make them legal — and for common-sense restrictions on their use. Well, with the proposed ordinance, I think we’ve gone from under-regulating rain barrels to over-regulating them. We should encourage rain barrel use, or at least not discourage it. Placing too many restrictions on their use — especially those around location — will accomplish the latter.
  • We voted unanimously to raise recycling fees for 2014, including from $45.92 to $50.51 for single-family homeowners. This decision can be directly tied to reduced state funding to local governments for recycling programs — money removed as part of the Republican state budget several years ago and never fully restored. South Milwaukee has covered much of that shortfall by applying “rainy day” fund balance to the program. And we’ll continue to do so in 2014, just in a more sustainable way.
  • The council also voted to cancel our Nov. 19 and Dec. 3 meetings, leaving our Nov. 26 budget approval meeting in place to consider any necessary items. Here is a list of the upcoming key budget dates.

The council also briefly discussed the recently released fire consolidation report. The upshot: It’s still early in the process, but at least we have a potential roadmap to seriously consider this issue. I will keep you posted … and encourage you to get involved in the debate. Your voices must be heard.

Jursik Publishes News Update

South Shore Supervisor Pat Jursik has published her October E-News newsletter, with updates on various issues facing the county and some good advice on the rollout of Affordable Care Act …

There is much confusion on the roll-out of the Affordable Care Act in addition to the histrionics taking place in D.C. including a government shut-down. I know this is a controversial topic, but I would like to suggest the following: First try to understand the new law. Here is a link to a very easy-to-watch video featuring the “You Toons” produced by the Kaiser Foundation which tries to explain the program without a heavy bias: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZkk6ueZt-U.

Second, since Wisconsin is one of the states that did not accepted the Medicaid extension that would have provided more coverage to low income families, the County Board and Executive responded by funding several programs. The programs are too complicated to fully address in this short article, but there is a service available with the additonal county funding. If you are a family that has received Badgercare, please call the social services hotline at 211. The county funded additonal staff to answer questions and to assist those who will not get the expanded insurance with a substitute program available to Wisconsin citizens.

For more information visit http://www.healthcare.gov, or call the 24/7 hotline at: 1-800-318-2596.
