A Day To Celebrate Little League

One thing I love about South Milwaukee is its unique traditions. One of them happens Saturday.

That’s when the Little League Parade pushes off at noon from the Salvatore’s parking lot downtown and continues west on Milwaukee Avenue and south on 9th Avenue to Little League Park. Then, it’s the Opening Day celebration, which includes a kickoff ceremony and a full slate of games.

I don’t know of another city that has such an event, and that’s something we should be proud. So let’s celebrate Little League on Saturday, as it begins its 60th season in South Milwaukee.

Learn more about Opening Day here … see you on the parade route!

(And go AA River Cats! That’s my son’s team.)

Fit For Continued Growth: Cudahy’s Anytime Fitness Celebrates Grand Re-Opening

It’s a bit north of South Milwaukee (less than a mile), but I wanted to give a shoutout to Anytime Fitness, which is celebrating its grand re-opening this weekend.

The 24-hour fitness center, 5879 S. Packard Ave. in Cudahy, recently completed a large expansion and remodeling, and it’s planned a series of events through Saturday. Activities include fitness classes, educational seminars, exercise demos and more. A formal ribbon cutting is set for 6 p.m. on Friday.

See the full schedule on their website, and check them out on Facebook. And there’s a lot more detail on the growth of the business in this press release.

I wish Jennifer and the gang at Anytime Fitness well on their expansion in the South Shore — and offer a continued thanks for their involvement in the South Milwaukee business community.

Jursik Publishes New Newsletter … And Weighs In On Effort To Oust Board Chairwoman

Check out Milwaukee County Supervisor Pat Jurisk’s latest constituent newsletter here, including this item on her decision to not support the ouster of Board Chairwoman Marina Dimtrijevic …

A number of District 8 constituents have asked me to join five other supervisors in seeking removal of the County Board Chairwoman. I have also received a number of questions regarding the issue of negotiating with a non-certified union, which is not permitted under Act 10, the legislation that removed significant provisions of municipal employee bargaining rights. To respond, I have consistently stated and reiterate in this Open Letter to all of my constituents:

I believe that communications, conversations, discussions, interactions or, if you like, “negotiations” did take place between the County’s labor negotiator Fred Bau and AFSCME’s Rich Abelson. I believe these two gentlemen have both stated as much. I do not know who directed Mr. Bau to act as he did. The Finance Committee, the Board Chairwoman and County Executive each have the ability to direct Mr. Bau. I know the following are the facts:

  • Fact: The Finance Committee, of which I am a member, has taken no formal vote to  direct negotiations or to enter into a contract with AFSCME (Discussions with legal counsel took place in closed session. Our legal counsel has always provided legal advice consistent with the directives of Act 10. Closed session discussions are confidential).
  • Fact: The Chairwoman never placed a negotiated contract with AFSCME on any committee agenda for a formal vote.
  • Fact: I have never had an opportunity as your representative on the Board to vote against such negotiations. My position has always been that AFSCME is not a certified union and therefore cannot act to represent employees of the County under Act 10.
  • Fact: There is no contract with a decertified union in violation of Act 10.

I will continue to work within the realm of facts. I do not intend to react to political requests that are not factually based. For this reason, I will not join any group seeking to remove the Chairwoman based on hearsay or “he said, she said” conjectures or any other politically charged statement surrounding this issue. Please call or e-mail my office if you wish to discuss this further.

South Milwaukee Caterpillar Steelworkers Say “No” To New Contract

Update: Business Journal coverage has a statement from the union. And here is a story from the Chicago Tribune. Also, check out stories from the Wall Street Journal, BizTimes.com and Fox 6.

Here is the news from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. From the story …

The union representing about 800 employees at the Caterpillar Inc. factory in South Milwaukee has voted down a proposed six-year labor contract that would have frozen wages but provided additional protection against permanent job losses.

Members of United Steelworkers Local 1343 rejected the contract that, among other things, would have resulted in lower wages for new hires and increased health insurance costs for some employees.

Despite turning down the proposed contract, union officials said, the membership will return to work and will resume negotiations with Caterpillar for a new contract.

So, what does this all mean? Is a strike looming? A lockout? I hope not. That would be good for no one — including South Milwaukee as a whole.

I’ll keep you posted … and post your comments below.

Technology Used To Catch Boston Bombings Suspect Being Used In South Milwaukee, Too

Some interesting information from South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter …

I’m glad to see we are keeping up with the latest technology in our quest to save lives (and potentially capture terrorists).

Since the capture of the second Boston bombing suspect a few weeks ago, there has been a lot of media attention around the Forward Looking Infra Red (FLIR) Unit that was used by the helicopter to spot the suspect in the boat. More recently, the Milwaukee Police Department was spotlighted on the evening news demonstrating their FLIR Unit on the MPD Rescue Boat.

I thought I would let everyone know that SMFD, too, has a FLIR Unit on our rescue boat.  In fact, the unit was used last year to assist in locating the adult and two juveniles who were missing after dark from Bender Park on their personal watercraft.  At that incident, our boat was deployed after dark and located the group attempting to push their watercraft back to Bender Park after having run out of fuel. The three boaters were taken aboard our rescue boat and their watercraft was towed back to Bender Park. Had they not been located, the outcome would have predictably been quite worse considering the water temperature and where they were located.  In addition, only one of the three was wearing a flotation vest. …

This equipment, which was fully funded by an Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) Port Security Grant, has great potential, especially considering the weather conditions (fog, etc.) and darkness we may be called in to respond.

Our boat is currently being prepped for placement in it’s mooring spot at the SM Yacht Club.

Check out pictures here, here and here, including a screenshot that shows a human figure standing amidst the department’s training tower and vehicles.

Caterpillar Contract Would Reportedly Freeze Wages And Pensions, Increase Health Care Costs And More

Update: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has more details on the proposed contract … and the Business Journal is saying a strike won’t be called immediately even if the deal is voted down on Tuesday.

The Chicago Tribune has more information on the proposed Caterpillar contract for its approximately 800 unionized South Milwaukee workers. From the story:

Members of the United Steel Workers in Wisconsin are set to vote Tuesday on a proposed six-year contract with Caterpillar Inc. that would freeze wages, increase health care costs and give senior employees fewer protections.

The proposed agreement covers roughly 800 workers in South Milwaukee who, under the current contract, make about $18 to $34 per hour. Caterpillar acquired the South Milwaukee plant in 2011, when it purchased Bucyrus International Inc., a mining equipment maker, for $8.8 billion.

“Wages at the South Milwaukee facility are significantly above market, which puts our facility at a competitive disadvantage,” the company said in a summary of the agreement given to workers on Sunday at a union meeting.

A Caterpillar spokesman declined to comment further.

The proposed contract also calls for a lower wage rate for workers hired after May. It would additionally freeze pensions and would, instead, direct employee retirement contributions toward a new 401k plan. …

On Sunday, some workers who attended the union meeting expressed frustration over the contract.

“There was a lot of anger in the room,” said Dewey Lewis, who was the union’s president when the current contract was negotiated. “It’s totally unfair. No self-respecting union would accept it.”

Caterpillar is also offering a $2,500 ratification bonus and annual bonuses through a new employee reward program.

More Caterpillar Job Cuts — This Time In Illinois

Check out stories from the Peoria Journal Star and the Business Journal.

From the Peoria newspaper …

After months of temporary layoffs and short-term shutdowns, as well as a 45 percent drop in first quarter 2013 profits, Caterpillar Inc. announced layoffs at its Mapleton foundry.

Nearly 60 employees will be placed on indefinite layoff, the first of which will be effective in early May, the first long-term measure to “align manpower with production,” Caterpillar announced Thursday.

A statement from Caterpillar said the recent first quarter statement — which included a 17 percent drop in sales and 45 percent drop in profits from a year ago — showed that its manpower numbers did not align with the 2013 build schedule.

“We regret the impact to our employees and their families,” the statement said.
