Report: Local Caterpillar Exec Leaving Company

Update: This Dow Jones story links the departure of de Leon with the accounting “scandal” in China, although “de Leon wasn’t being accused of accounting misdeeds.”

Luis de Leon, a vice president at Caterpillar’s mining division and Bucyrus International’s former chief operating officer, is leaving the company, according to this story in the Business Journal.

From it:

De Leon was vice president of Caterpillar’s mining products division. Peoria, Ill.-based Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) has its mining equipment headquarters in Oak Creek and operates plants in South Milwaukee and Milwaukee.

“We wish Luis well in his new endeavors,” said Steve Wunning, Caterpillar group president with responsibility for resource industries, in a written statement.

Caterpillar said it will name a replacement for de Leon in the near future.

Also, “Caterpillar Inc uncovered ‘deliberate, multi-year, coordinated accounting misconduct’ at a subsidiary of a Chinese company it acquired last summer, leading it to write off most of the value of the deal and wiping out more than half its expected earnings for the fourth quarter of 2012,” according to this story from Reuters and other reports.

Mining Controversy: Honadel One Of Bill’s Authors

South Milwaukee Rep. Mark Honadel is at the center of the first big debate in the new legislature — the effort to pass a new mining bill.

Honadel is one of four authors of the Assembly bill. Check out the press release here. From it:

“Not only will this provide family-supporting jobs in northern Wisconsin, but it will have a direct impact on businesses in the Milwaukee area such as Caterpillar and Joy Global,” Rep. Mark Honadel (R-South Milwaukee) said.

Of course, not everyone agrees with Honadel, who is also quoted in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Associated Press stories. South Shore state Sen. Chris Larson is among those concerned with the proposed bill. His quote in this story:

“They have the votes to do whatever it is that they want,” added Senate Minority Leader Chris Larson, D-Milwaukee. “But if they go in another partisan direction, if they continue down the wrong path that they did the last two years, it’s going to show that we’re not going to have jobs, we’re going to continue to be divided and the people of Wisconsin are going to be frustrated.”

Of course, I’d like to know what you think about the mining bill. Post you comments below.

Me? I’m concerned that it bends too much toward mining companies. The concerns I raised last summer are still valid, and this line in today’s Journal Sentinel story really concerns me: “The bill would also allow for the filling in of a lake bed in some circumstances and allows for the destruction of wetlands, if the loss is made up elsewhere in ceded territories of northern Wisconsin.”

Really? That strikes me as a bridge too far. I’m no tree hugger, but I hope any mining bill maintains sensible environmental protections. Provisions like that don’t strike me as sensible.

Details Emerge In Plans For Former Delphi Site In Oak Creek … And They Include A Big Box

That is according to stories in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Oak Creek Patch.

From the Journal Sentinel story …

The 191,000-square-foot Meijer store would be on the eastern portion of the 85-acre site, which is west of S. Howell Ave. and south of W. Drexel Ave., said Jerry Franke, president of development firm Wispark LLC.

The Meijer store would occupy about one-third of the site, formerly occupied by Delphi Corp. That auto parts factory closed, and was later demolished.

The western portion of the site would have around 150,000 to 200,000 square feet of commercial space, mainly in the former of smaller stores, restaurants and other services, such as a fitness center and medical offices, Franke said Wednesday.

There also would be around 700 apartments, he said. The apartments and additional commercial space would be developed in stages over several years.

What do you think of the plan and its potential impacts on South Milwaukee? Post your comments below!

Larson Profiled In Journal Sentinel

South Shore state Sen. Chris Larson was on the front page of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel this morning in what was a pretty positive profile.

Check it out here. From it …

At the age of 32, a time when most politicians are just getting started, he finds himself in the middle of a quick political rise.

His youth is an asset, but it could also be a liability.

He can dare to dream and win – he won a Milwaukee County supervisor position in 2008, knocked off a Democratic incumbent to take a Senate seat in 2010 and guided a new generation of Democrats to victories in 2012.

But he could still stumble and fail – three of his Democratic colleagues blew off a caucus meeting in Madison last week, and he faces the prospect of a long season of defeats in a state where Republicans hold the governorship and both houses of the Legislature.

Yet if other more seasoned politicians underestimate him – and some apparently, do – Larson doesn’t appear to be too bothered.

“You know what, I’ve always been an underdog,” he says. “I think it’s greatly appropriate because I like to fight for the underdog.”

Guest Blog: Pat Jursik On Joe Sanfelippo’s Proposal To Make The Milwaukee County Board Part-Time

Update: Be sure to vote in my new poll on the right-hand side of the page!

I asked Milwaukee County Supervisor Pat Jursik for her thoughts on the legislation proposed by state Rep. Joe Sanfelippo to require a binding referendum asking voters if Milwaukee County supervisors should be part time.

Here is what she wrote me …

First, it is hard for any supervisor to discuss this issue since it affects pay and benefits; therefore, I have an automatic conflict of interest.  Any attorney would call such a witness biased.  This being said, I want you and all of my constituent to know that I will serve my constituents throughout my term as promised in my Oath of office no matter how this turns out.

Second, Can this job be done by a part-timer?  Yes, if all you do is attend committee meetings and board meetings.  Sanfelippo has already said he works part-time and therefore knows it can be done.  But I would ask anyone to tell me what Sanfelippo has accomplished for his district?  He has no successful projects because he does not work with others to reach consensus or compromise.  He Votes “NO” on any controversial or budgetary matter which really does not require him to spend much time studying the issue.  But enough about Sanfelippo, I will talk about my district.  When I first ran for this office, I had a full-time law practice.  I thought perhaps I’d be able to do my superviosry duties and still be able to run a scaled-down practice.  Then I ran into the first major issue that effected the South Shore, the move to take down the Hoan Bridge. I reacted with creation of the Coalition to Save the Hoan.  I created a Petition and held town-hall meetings.  I appeared at the Press Club and many other venues to press our case for saving the Hoan.  I soon discovered I had no time for other duties.  I’ve fought for extension of 794, repair of the 7 Bridges, keeping the 128th open, South Shore Option for Economic Development and other projects to benefit our district.  I am proud of my record.  I probably sound like a candidate for re-election (as I said there is an automatic conflict for me to address this issue).  I hold these accomplishments up to those of Sanfelippo to show what working full-time vs. part-time looks like.

Third:   A pox on both their houses.  Yes, this is base politics at its raw, ugly, take-no-hostages level.  I did not vote for the current redistricting plan on the board.  When the Holloway-led board did redistricting, they too used their majority to reduce Republican representation on the board basically redistricting Joe Rice out of his seat.  This ugly act has now come full-circle and perhpas the “board” (some new members were elected and did not participate) has reaped what it sowed.  Should we govern regionally?  SEWRPC is our regional planner, and perhaps our governance should be as well.  The problem with Sanfelippo’s attack from this view-point is that he would only change the rules for Milwaukee County while leaving all others the same.  When you want real change, everyone should sit at that table.

Of course, I’d like to know what your thoughts are on this issue. Post your comments below!

Where Are They Now? More South Milwaukee Athlete Alumni Updates

Thanks to Ante Udovicic for doing the leg work and sending these along … enjoy!

Natalie Marlowe (class of 2008)
Natalie was a multi-time all-conference basketball player for the Rockets, and was a standout volleyball and softball player and an honor student as well! This fall, she was hired as the new assistant women’s basketball coach at Hendrix College in Arkansas.  Natalie recently graduated with honors from Chicago State University following a successful playing career with the Division I Cougars.

During her career at Chicago State, Natalie appeared in 116 games, recording 806 points, 422 rebounds, 386 assists and 171 steals as a four-year starter at guard/forward. She is going to have a wonderful career as a coach!

Steve Bartlein (class of 2008)
Steve was recently selected by his over 30 teammates as Team Captain for the UW Whitewater baseball team. Fantastic accomplishment, and for those that know Steve, there should be zero surprise that he received this honor.

Rich Galewski (class of 2004) & Nathan Marlowe (class of 2005)
Both Rich & Nathan had great baseball careers at South Milwaukee and have gone on to the collegiate coaching ranks, joining the UW-Platteville coaching staff. Rich recently was the freshman baseball coach at Greendale High School and Nathan recently graduated from Edgewood College, where he finished with the 5th most wins in school history as a pitcher (and he turns 26 today – Happy Birthday Nathan!)

Courtney Susedik (class of 2004)
Courtney ran in the 2011 Boston Marathon . She finished in the top 3% of women . Also, she was in the Lakefront Marathon in 2011 and finished took 14th, finishing the 26.2 miles race in 3 hrs. & 16 min. Having seen her running through all kinds of ridiculous weather on the streets of SM, I am sure she has run plenty of more races since then as well. Courtney was on the Track and Cross team while she was at SMHS.

Emily Wesley (class of 2008)
Emily was a 4-year varsity basketball player as a Rocket, and ended up winning 4 conference championships as part of the Concordia Women’s Basketball team. She is now the Varsity Assistant Girls Basketball coach at Nicolet High School! Another former Rocket who was tailor-made to coach!

Jake played baseball and football at South Milwaukee, so why change things now. Jake is also playing baseball and football at Lawrence University! One college sport is tough enough!

Farewell, Dunham’s

Update: Here is a Cudahy NOW story on this.

What the heck is happening to Packard Plaza?

The once-venerable Cudahy shopping center — which has already lost Aldi in the past year or so and is facing the closure of Merchandise Outlet — is about to lose another significant retailer: Dunham’s Sporting Goods.

I confirmed the closure today. I posted a message on their Facebook page, and I got this response …

Yes, our Cudahy location is closing. However, please note that we do have a store in Franklin that is less than 6 miles away (http://www.dunhamssports.com/store-map/) from Cudahy.

This one hurts. Dunham’s is the only business of its kind on the South Shore, and it’s a favorite destination of mine for sporting goods for me and the kids. From batting gloves for Christian to fishing gear for me, our family shops there often.

I’d like to know what you think about the demise of Packard Plaza, and Dunham’s. Remember Gimbels? Post your comments below!

(FYI: Merchandise Outlet is in its “final days,” according to its website.)
