More On The Recent Tire Slashings

The new NOW police blotter has details (like approximate location) on many of the recent tire slashing incidents.

Check out the story here.

I count more than 20 incidents primarily in and around downtown, give or take a few blocks, and it wasn’t just tires being slashed. Other vandalism like broken car mirrors were reported.

If you have any information on the incidents, please contact the South Milwaukee Police Department at 768-8060. And I’ll keep you posted.

Got Milk? South Milwaukee Schools Do

Update: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has a photo of milk being delivered to Rawson Elementary in its story.

In light of the closure of the Golden Guerney dairy, I posed that question to South Milwaukee Superintendent Rita Olson, and here is how she responded …

The milk we use is produced by Golden Guernsey. Our supplier is Mapleton Dairy, and they were able to supply us with Kemps milk today and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.  A few nutrition breaks were unable to use milk today because the shipment arrived a little later in the morning than usual. They used juice instead, but we had milk in time for lunches. The differences:

  • No strawberry.
  • Milk will not come in the chug plastic bottle, but will instead be in the traditional cartons currently used at the middle and high schools.

Thanks to Dr. Olson for the information.

Menomonee Avenue Development Update

Following up on the proposed development at 9th and Menomonee called The Mosaic …

The City Council, at its Dec. 18 meeting, denied the rezoning necessary for the townhouse project and cancelled a public hearing, leaving open the option of the developer returning to the Plan Commission with revised plans.

Check out the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story on this here. I’ll keep you posted if this project moves ahead.

Contested Race: Three Candidates For Two South Milwaukee School Board Seats

There will be competition in the race for South Milwaukee School Board, as incumbents Therese Travia and Joseph Weirich face off with challenger Doug Perry for two seats on the April 2 ballot.

That’s according to the school district, which has rotating three-year terms for its board members.

Travia and Weirich were last elected in 2010, with Weirch winning as a write-in.

Perry lives at 1411 17th Ave.

I’ll keep you posted on this race as it unfolds this winter.

Rash Of Tire Slashings Reported

More than 40 people reported having their tires slashed in South Milwaukee and Cudahy last weekend.

From South Milwaukee Police Chief Ann Wellens:

All areas of the city were hit but predominately the center area of the city.  Occurred during the early morning hours of December 29th.  The damage was mostly tire slashings but there were a few side mirrors that were damaged.

I’ll keep you posted on both cases if and when I hear more. In the meantime, please stay vigilant, and safe. Report any suspicious behavior to police.

Flu Hits South Milwaukee

The South Milwaukee Health Department is reporting that seven people have been diagnosed and hospitalized with Influenza A so far this flu season.

That’s up from recent years, and it drives home the importance of getting your flu shots.

Remember, the Health Department has influenza vaccine available, and walk-in flu shot clinics are held from 2 to 4 p.m. every Thursday at the department, located inside City Hall.

The vaccine costs $28 for adults, and it’s free for those six months through age 18.

Learn more on the Health Department website, and the Centers for Disease Control has good information here.

Decision 2013: No Ballot Competition For City Council Members

The deadline for candidate declarations came and went Wednesday with this reality emerging: Barring a write-in challenge, all South Milwaukee aldermen will run unopposed this spring.

Of course, that includes me … and I pledge to work hard to earn your vote on April 2, no matter whose name is on the ballot.

Check out my campaign website here. And look for me on the campaign trail in the next few months.

It’s been an honor serving as Fourth District alderman since 2009, and, with your support, I look forward to two more years on the council.

You can see the list of council members here.

(Look for an update on the South Milwaukee School Board races soon. Incumbents Therese Travia, the board president, and Joseph Weirich are up for re-election, and I’m checking to see if they have any declared competition.)

Mill Pond Update: DNR Requires Dam Upgrades

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has ordered some upgrades be made to the Mill Pond Dam, according to the monthly newsletter from Milwaukee County Supervisor Pat Jursik.

They are:

  • the removal of vegetation from specific areas under the supervision of an engineer;
  • the maintenance of healthy grass cover on the embankments;
  • a structural evaluation by an engineer of the spillway abutments to determine if masonry repairs are required;
  • the repair of the sluice gate, which is currently inoperable; and
  • the installation of two benchmarks.
