Big Night At The South Milwaukee Farmers’ Market: SMPAC Concert And Outdoor Movie

Just a reminder about a couple of special events at Thursday’s South Milwaukee Downtown Market …

First, there’s a special South Milwaukee Performing Arts concert starting at 5 p.m., as I’m Not a Pilot plays. See clips from this popular local group here.

Then, at dusk, around 8:15 p.m. or so, it’s the first of three outdoor Groovy Movie Nites planned following the market. This week, it’s Tangled, a fun and modern-day take on the Rapunzel. (My kids, ages 4 and 7 love it. And I must admit it’s pretty good.)

The August 9 movie is The Smurfs. August 16, it’s The Wizard of Oz.

Jursik Publishes New County News Update

South Shore Supervisor Pat Jursik has published her August Enews newsletter, with items on Layton Avenue improvements, an extension of a bus route, an update on the Lake Parkway extension and information on an advisory referendum being placed on all Milwaukee County ballots this November.

Check out the newsletter here.

Here is what Pat wrote about the proposed Downtown Transit Center project:

The County Board passed a resolution authorizing negotiations with Barrett Visionary Development for the purchase of the Downtown Transit Center site.  This resolution addresses many concerns.  It affirms that: the County Board expects to receive fair market value; the Economic Development Director must more closely investigate whether any of the site is filled lakebed subject to the Public Trust Doctrine; and the Economic & Community Development Committee will solicit public input prior to making any final recommendation to the County Board.

The Board also passed a related resolution which aims to protect an open and equitable procedure for the sale of public property.

The recent process used at the transit site was flawed.  It lacked transparency and appeared to be a sweetheart deal for a chosen developer who hired an expensive lobbyist to influence decision makers.  The process was further flawed by lack of a thorough public hearing due in large part to the actions of the County’s Economic Development Director, an out-of-County resident seemingly unconcerned with seeking input from the citizens of Milwaukee County.  To the credit of our Board Chairwoman, Marina Dimitrijevic, a compromise was reached which will assure compliance with the Public Trust Doctrine, aim for fair market value and include a public hearing.

South Milwaukee’s Magnum Fitness Acquired

Another South Milwaukee manufacturer has been acquired.

This time, it’s Magnum Fitness, which is headquartered at 2201 12th Ave. downtown. Taiwan-based Johnson Health Tech announced on Tuesday that it has acquired the firm.

See the Business Journal story here. From it:

In addition to rounding out the existing product portfolio, the acquisition of Magnum also provides production capabilities in North America.

Over the next 12 months Johnson Health Tech management will evaluate how to best integrate the existing Magnum team, product lines, distributors and facilities into its existing operations. Ron Carringi, director of engineering, will serve as general manager of the manufacturing facility.

The company will still be present in Wisconsin with JHT’s global product development, marketing and engineering based in Cottage Grove.

Let’s hope that this is good news for Magnum and South Milwaukee — the similar hope I had/have for Bucyrus (now Caterpillar), Cooper Power (soon to be owned by Eaton), Appleton Electric and Vilter (owned by Emerson) and Ladish (owned by Allegheny Technology Inc.).

Learn more about Magnum and its products here. Click here for the JHT website.

Update: See coverage from Fox 6WISNTMJ4 and CBS 58

South Milwaukee police are investigating a report of an attempted sexual assault that occurred following Lionsfest late Friday night.

From the press release

A teenage girl has reported to the South Milwaukee Police Department that at about 11:40pm on July 27, 2012 she was walking in the area of 15th Avenue at Chestnut with two friends when they were approached by a suspicious male.  The male was able to detain the victim, attempted to remove some of her clothing, and then fled on foot.  The description of the man is as follows:

A white male, about 20 years of age, 5’08” tall, thin, with very short brown hair.

This is the second reported sexual assault in South Milwaukee in two weeks. Here is a post on the other. Police are also investigating potential links between this case and other assaults in Bay View.

Please be extra vigilant as you’re out this weekend.

I’ll keep you posted when I learn more.

Caterpillar Reports Huge Profits

$1.7 billion. That’s how much profit Caterpillar reported for the quarter ended June 30, the company reported on Wednesday.

Check out coverage in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Wall Street Journal and Reuters. From the Journal Sentinel story:

Last year’s acquisition of mining equipment maker Bucyrus International, of South Milwaukee, and engine maker MWM Holding GmbH provided a $1.37 billion boost to sales during the quarter.

Caterpillar is the world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment, and its results are watched closely because they are considered an indicator of industrial activity and the health of the overall economy.

The company’s success this year is occurring even as U.S. construction activity remains depressed and well below the prior peak, and amid problems facing Europe and economic concerns in China, CEO Doug Oberhelman said in a statement.

“The good news is this doesn’t feel like 2008. Interest rates are low, central banks are prepared to inject more liquidity if needed, and housing is coming off lows, not a peak, and seems to be improving,” Oberhelman said.

Of course, word of the huge profits comes amid the ongoing strike in Peoria, Ill., where Caterpillar is seeking significant concessions from workers even during these boom times. WUWM, a National Public Radio station, tackled that issue in a piece this week, following up on a New York Times story published on Monday.

From the story:

At the Caterpillar factory in South Milwaukee, workers are wondering about the implications of the Joliet dispute on their contract. It’s up for renewal next spring.

Barry Lewis is a gear cutter at the plant, and vice president of United Steel Workers, Local 1343.

“Some people are very worried. We’re not sure how it equates to us, I mean, we’re aware that they’re United Auto Workers, we’re Steel Workers. The product lines are completely different,” Lewis says.

Stepping Safely: Council Approves Funding For Sidewalk Repairs

The city’s sidewalk improvement program has made its way to the Fourth District.

The South Milwaukee City Council approved spending just shy of $215,000 on sidewalk replacement and repairs this summer at its meeting last Tuesday.

That includes $189,930 to local contractor EK Construction for replacement of about 29,500 square feet of sidewalk (approximately 1,000 squares) primarily in the Fourth District — the last of the districts to get attention as crews worked their way around the city in recent years replacing sidewalks.

The council also approved spending up to $25,000 on a program to replace sidewalk trip hazards through sawcutting. Last year, 545 minor trip hazards were removed in this manner at a cost of $24,752, or about $45 per hazard. Removal and replacement of the entire sidewalk at all of these locations would have cost an estimated $175,000. You can expect to see similar results in 2012.

In light of the Heat Advisory issued for tomorrow, attendees are strongly encouraged to dress accordingly and consider enjoying their dinner at home as accommodations are going to be made for take-out dinners.

Temperatures are expected to reach close to 100 degrees yet again, according to this advisory from the National Weather Service. Stay cool!

(You’ll also recall that last year’s dinner was cancelled due to heat.)
