Heritage Days Parade: Do Your Part To Help!

Parade 3 Parade 2 Parade 1

The South Milwaukee Heritage Days Parade team is looking for your financial help … and I can’t think of a better event to get behind.

The parade is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, and it’s quickly becoming one of the largest in the area.

From the parade committee …

The Parade will be bigger and better in almost all facets. More music including the South Shore Drill Team from Chicago (see You Tube). More Veterans. More special guests including a tribute to the 3 past Mayors, and Green Bay Packers Super Fan St. Vincent and his 1957 Packard Packermobile, and all 5 Brewers Racing Sausages! All of this comes at a bigger and better cost however, and the Committee is asking you to help. You can contribute individually or pool your resources. We have a lot of ground to make up in 8 short weeks and welcome any financial relief. We are now a 501(c)3 so your contributions should be tax deductible. This Committee has almost doubled the size of the Parade in 2 short years. … Thanks in advance and keep up the fight.

Find more details on how to give here. And look for 50-50 raffle tickets around town.

And a big thank you to all of the parade committee members. This is truly a year-round effort, but their efforts will pay off with  a terrific event as they take it to new heights in 2015.

Please support them in their work. It’s an investment in what makes South Milwaukee uniquely South Milwaukee.

South Milwaukee Heritage Days: A Shoutout To Our Volunteers

So, Heritage Days 2014 are over. What a week!

The DARE Golf Outing. St. Luke’s Ice Cream Social. Firehouse Spaghetti Dinner. Evening on the Avenue. Heritage Days Parade. Great Duck Race. South Milwaukee Lionsfest.

I had the pleasure of attending all of these, and each was special, true celebrations of our great city.

But let’s keep in mind that none of this would be possible without the hard work and dedication of dozens (hundreds?) of volunteers. I know time is tight and demands are high, but South Milwaukeeans always seem to come through, and not just during Heritage Week.

To all of our volunteers, I say, “thank you.” Your efforts are always appreciated.

Celebrating South Milwaukee Heritage Days

Heritage Days are the best days of the year to be a South Milwaukeean. And with a full roster of events, there is something for everyone, including a few exciting new additions for 2014.

Here is a list …

Monday, July 21

DARE Golf Outing

The big annual fundraiser for the South Milwaukee Police Department’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education program is held at Oakwood Golf Course, with lunch and beverages included. A raffle is also planned. Cost is $80 per person. To sign up, contact Officer Lewison at 768-8060. Learn more in my previous post.

Tuesday, July 22

Ice Cream Social

The event is from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, 2200 18th Ave. There will hot dogs and brats, a raffle and band concert. And ice cream, of course.

Wednesday, July 23

Firehouse Spaghetti Dinner

Dinner is served from 4:30 to 8 p.m. for this outstanding community event held at the South Milwaukee Fire Department, 929 Marshall Court. Di Carlo Trattoria & Pizzeria caters.

Thursday, July 24-Saturday, July 26

Drama at the Depot

In a new Heritage Week event (and hopefully an annual one) outdoor performances are planned for 7:30 p.m. each night at the 121-year-old railroad station at 11th and Madison Avenues. Musicians, dancers and more are scheduled as part of this collaboration between the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center and The Battery Factory. Learn more in my previous post. Performances are free, open to the public and appropriate for all ages.

Thursday, July 24

Evening on the Avenue

What a great collection of downtown events! Food, music, demonstrations and much, much more are on the agenda for the big annual downtown street party, as well as Drama at the Depot and the South Milwaukee Downtown Market. Also scheduled: the grand reopening of Sorce Martial Arts, which is celebrating its terrific expansion and renovation.

Friday, July 25-Sunday, July 27

The South Milwaukee Lions’ biggest annual fundraiser features food, music, rides, games and plenty of family fun. There is a South Milwaukee High School all-class reunion and car show Friday night, and Family Day on Sunday, with lots in between. Here is the Facebook page.

Saturday, July 26

Heritage Days Parade

The city’s biggest parade runs from 8th and Milwaukee, west on Milwaukee to 16th, then north to Lionsfest, with dozens of entrants and surely lots of surprises. Look for me and my family on the fire truck.

The Great Duck Race
This is a really fun event for a great cause put on by the Friends of Mill Pond and Oak Creek Watercourse. Ducks set off in Oak Creek at 2 p.m. from 15th and Milwaukee.

Learn more about all of these events at www.smheritagedays.org. And I’ll see you around town!

Heritage Days: So, What Do You Think?

Heritage Days 2013 wrapped up this evening with Lionsfest.

From the firehouse spaghetti dinner and Evening on the Avenue to Lionsfest and my first time at the Great Duck Race, my family and I had a great time this week.

Of course, I’d like to know what you think.

  • What’s your favorite Heritage Days event? Why?
  • Where can improvements or changes be made to existing events?
  • What would you like to see added (if anything) to Heritage Days?

Post your comments below … and join me in thanking all of the dedicated volunteers who make Heritage Days happen every year. It takes hundreds of people to pull this off, and let’s not take them for granted.

Big Heritage Days Finish: Parade Saturday, Lionsfest Continues

The weather improved, and Lionsfest got off to a good start Friday night with the fish fry, car cruise, all-South Milwaukee High School reunion and more.

(And I sold a fair amount of pull tabs.)

Saturday and Sunday bring more great food, music and activities at 16th and Rawson Avenues … and, of course, the annual Heritage Days parade. The parade starts at 11 a.m. around Eighth and Milwaukee Avenues, heads west down Milwaukee, then north on 16th Avenue to Lionsfest. I’ll be handing out flyers promoting the blog, so be sure to say hi.

And don’t forget about the Great Duck Race presented by the Friends of the Mill Pond and Oak Creek Watercourse. It starts at 2 p.m. at 15th and Milwaukee Avenues.

Check out a full schedule in my previous post.

Enjoy the weekend!

Evening on the Avenue is in the books, and it looked to be another big South Milwaukee Heritage Days success.

Next up: Lionsfest. Here’s a quick summary of the schedule …

  • Friday: Fish fry, cruise and car show and music (Cheap Shots, 4 to 8 p.m., and Caught in the Act, 8 p.m. to midnight). And don’t forget the all-class reunion for South Milwaukee High School.
  • Saturday: Rib dinner and music (Kool Grey, 1 to 4 p.m.; Jamit, 4 to 8 p.m.; and Mount Olive, 8 p.m. to midnight)
  • Sunday: It’s Kids Day, with cookie decorating, a visit from the Racing Sausages, a magic show, face painting, a penny scramble and a chance to win two bicycles. There’s also the famous Lions chicken dinner and music (Chuck Travis Band, noon to 4 p.m., and Ricochettes, 4 to 8 p.m.)

See the full schedule here, and I’ll hopefully see you there. As a new member of the South Milwaukee Lions, I’ll be volunteering throughout the weekend.

And don’t forget about Saturday’s parade and the duck race. See my previous post for more details.

Heritage Days In Full Swing With Evening On The Avenue, Lionsfest, The Big Parade And More

SpaghettiFrom the vantage point of the soda table — where Trinity Lutheran Church volunteers served thirsty guests — Wednesday’s South Milwaukee Fire Department Spaghetti Dinner looked to be a huge success.

And South Milwaukee’s Heritage Days celebration is just getting started.

Thursday, it’s Evening on the Avenue. Friday through Sunday, it’s Lionsfest. Saturday, it’s the Heritage Days parade and the duck race.

My previous post has a full schedule. Hope to see you around the next few days!

(In fact, I’ll be walking the parade route handing out flyers promoting this blog. Say hi if you see me.)

Reminder: Heritage Days Parade Saturday … And A Location Change For The Duck Race

Heritage Week continues with our annual parade today (Saturday).

The parade starts at 11 a.m. It begins at 12th and Milwaukee Avenues, heads west to 16th Avenue, turns north and ends at Lionsfest, which continues through Sunday (Family Day).

Also, be sure to check out the Friends of Oak Creek Watercourse and Mill Pond annual Duck Race starting at 2 p.m. at 15th and Milwaukee Avenues — not the Mill Pond. Please note the change from previous years.

See a full list of Heritage Days events here, and I’ll see you on the parade route!
