Milestone: 400 Wins For Coach Galewski

Congratulations to South Milwaukee baseball coach John Galewski, whose Rockets recorded his 400th win on Monday!

South Milwaukee is also contending for its first conference title since 2000. From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story

“I was hoping they didn’t because we’re chasing a conference championship,” Galewski said. “I know they know about that, so that’s more important.”

It looked like the Rockets were unaware after their 4-0 victory over Shorewood behind pitcher Matt McCarty’s two-hitter on Monday at Henry Aaron Field.

There were the usual handshakes, but nothing out of the ordinary.

“Yeah, we all knew,” McCarty said. “We talked about it on the bus on the way here and maybe doing something if we got the win.”

So, as Galewski was being interviewed near his dugout, two players dumped the Gatorade bucket on their unsuspecting coach.

“It’s a real honor to play for him,” said South Milwaukee’s Anthony Marlowe, who had two brothers and a cousin compete in the program.

Only 14 coaches in summer baseball have more victories than Galewski (400-388), who is in his 27th season.

“It’s really about the history of the kids that have gone through the program,” Galewski said. “My son played for me. There’s some emotion there.”

Added McCarty: “It’s so awesome to know I could give my coach his 400th win. It’s a great achievement for him and the program.”

Here is the team’s schedule the rest of the way.

WIAA regionals begin next Tuesday.

(The photo is of my son, Christian, pitching to one of the Rocket players Saturday, when Little Leaguers were invited to practice with the team. Very cool.)

Upset Alert: South Milwaukee Baseball Team Two Wins From State

At 14-18, it hasn’t been the best of seasons for the South Milwaukee High School baseball team. That, however, can change with a couple more wins … and a trip to the state tournament.

Following upsets win over sixth-seeded Muskego and third-seeded Franklin, the 11th-seeded Rockets play seventh-seeded West Allis Hale in a sectional semifinal at 2 p.m. on Monday at Hale. The winner of that game plays top-seeded Oak Creek or Greendale with a berth to the state tournament on the line.

Learn more here, and click here for more on the Franklin win.

And go Rockets!

South Milwaukee Baseball Team Performs “Call Me Maybe”

Check it out on YouTube.

And while you’re at it, check out the versions from the baseball teams at Florida and Harvard (who started this parody craze, as best I can tell). There appear to be dozens of others.

YouTube is a wonderful thing, isn’t it?

Celebrating South Milwaukee’s Baseball And Football Coach … And His Wife

South Milwaukee NOW has a great story on South Milwaukee High School baseball and football coach John Galewski and his wife Sandy — who both will be honored by the  Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association in February.

John will be inducted into the WBCA Hall of Fame. Sandy is the organization’s Woman of the Year.

Check out the story here. From it:

“Throughout the 25 years, the most dependable person I had was her,” said John, who nominated his wife in October. “She picks up any job I need her to do. The only thing I always knew from year to year was I’d always get help in any area I needed from her.

“It was something where I didn’t know if she’d win or not, but at least she’d find out I was thinking of her.”

John and Sandi’s relationship has always included baseball, softball or coaching. For eight years of their marriage, John played softball five days a week and on the weekends from April to October, many of those years when the couple had young children.

At times, he was coaching as many as three high school sports, including girls basketball and football.

Even today, John is South Milwaukee High School’s head football and baseball coach. But never once did Sandi issue an ultimatum and make John choose between her and athletics or coaching. As she puts it, how could she? The family loved traveling around on the weekends, taking mini-vacations to watch John play softball, and coaching, well, that brought out a special side of her husband.

“Once he started coaching, you could tell it was his passion,” Sandi said. “The passion he had for it, and how many lives of kids he’s changed, kids that didn’t have that fatherly figure … I just saw how much he loved it, and I wouldn’t want anyone to tell me I can’t do something that I loved.”

Congratulations to John and Sandy. Well deserved!
