New Name (And Aim) For South Milwaukee Chamber Of Commerce
Good-bye, South Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce. Hello, South Milwaukee Community and Business Association.
The change in name — and goals of the group — was recently finalized, with the bylaws for the new association being approved at a meeting on Feb. 18.
The revised objective of the organization: “promoting civic and business interests of South Milwaukee.” And membership is open to “any individual, business, association, organization or any other legally organized group with legal standing interested in the welfare of South Milwaukee.”
So, what does this mean? It somewhat remains to be seen, as the organization plots a new path.
Previously, the mission of the chamber was “to promote the economic development of the South Milwaukee business community” and “enhance our city by offering a variety of social and marketing events; beautification programs; and ongoing support and camaraderie for our business community.” There will certainly be elements of this in the association’s future, including its holiday decoration and street banner programs.
I wish the association well with its new aim — and I remain a proud member of it.
Similarly, I look forward to the new South Shore Chamber of Commerce taking root. This organization should fill some of the void left by the end of a traditional local chamber while taking a broader approach to promoting business from Cudahy, St. Francis and South Milwaukee. The business and purpose of this corporation shall be to advance the commercial and industrial interests of the communities it serves; to interest itself in legislation and administration in said communities; to inform the public as to successful commercial, industrial and civic expansion, all for the general interest and benefit of said communities; strive for a general recognition and understanding of the rights of legitimate enterprises; and generally carry on and conduct any lawful business or businesses whatever for the promotion of this corporation and its interests, the interests of its members and particularly the interest of the communities it serves.
I look forward to joining this organization as well — and to continue in the effort to promote and enhance local businesses. Communities are better off when the voice of local business is heard loud and clear.

SM Chamber to Match Donations for Replacement Holiday Decorations
It’s never too early to think about Christmas …

The Holiday Street Decorations, sponsored by the South Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce, are in need of replacement; but this can only be done with the help of your generosity.
In an effort to accomplish our goal of replacing 90- 100 holiday street decorations at an average cost of $300 each, the South Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce is committed to matching your donation (excludinggovernmentalagencies).Your generosity is appreciated by the end of February to take advantage of “End of Season” reduced pricing.
No contribution is too small. All funds received will be used toward replacement of the holiday street decorations. Contact the SM Chamber Office to indicate your commitment for this worthwhile project.

Business of the Year Golden Key Award: Emerald City Catering (Owners: Steve and Laurie Ozbolt). Active participation in the Chamber, involvement in the community and events held in it and an active interest in the development of the business community in the City of South Milwaukee.

Pride in Premises Award: City Administration Building (Led by City Clerk Jim Shelenske). Must be an established business and located in the City of South Milwaukee. The overall appearance should be considered – decorations, plantings, the building’s interior and exteriors, renovations made to the building, cleanliness, lack of graffiti, refuse. The business should be an improvement in our business districts.

V.I.P Award (Volunteer in Partnership): Donn Powers (Donn Powers Jeweler). Demonstrates involvement, in time commitments or monetary value, in a project that benefits the school or community.

Lakeshore Photography To Close Downtown Studio And Other Chamber News
Downtown South Milwaukee is losing a longstanding business.
Lakeshore Photography is closing its South Milwaukee studio on Saturday, with the owner of the business working out of her home instead of the Milwaukee Avenue storefront.

Storm Update: Plowing, Downtown Snow Removal, Self-Deposit and More …
Here is some new information regarding the Blizzard of ’11 …
- The Street Department has started working on snow removal efforts to clear intersections and alley approaches. Crews will be in this weekend to continue this process.
- The South Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce sent out an update on downtown snow removal today. See it here.
- The self-deposit station will be closed until further notice. It was originally scheduled to reopen on Saturday.
- I also received an email from County Supervisor Pat Jursik specifically relating to 15th Avenue sidewalks, saying: “I have received many concerns about snow removal on sidewalks along 15th Avenue, particularly between Rawson and Milwaukee Avenues. 15th Avenue is a critical route to school for many South Milwaukee pedestrians. This area is the jurisdiction of Milwaukee County Parks Department. These walkways are on the priority list. The Parks Department is currently clearing emergency access areas and sidewalks. I have requested that the Parks staff prioritize clearing these sidewalks.”
- And don’t forget about shoveling out your nearby fire hydrants.
