Improving The Health Of Our Community

I’m really proud of the work the South Milwaukee Health Department does to drive community healthy in our fair city. Consider this another example of how they’re bringing that promise to life.

The short story: The Health Department is joining others in the area in doing a community health assessment that will drive a community health improvement plan.

The goal: To make us all healthier.

To help, I ask that, if asked, you spend a few minutes completing the anonymous, random phone survey, providing input into your health-related behaviors. It’s valuable information that will feed the overall effort.

From the press release …

Hundreds of South Milwaukee residents may soon be contacted to participate in an important phone survey assessing the health of the community. Conducted every three years, the community health survey gathers information on health related behaviors from 400 anonymous, randomly selected residents.   Their responses, along with local and state public health data contribute to the South Milwaukee Health Department’s Community Health Assessment and helps guide its Community Health Improvement Plan.

“The survey provides valuable data for continued evaluation of community needs, and will help inform the health department, as well as other organizations in meeting the most pressing health needs of our community,” says Jacqueline Ove, Public Health Administrator “I encourage all South Milwaukee residents to support this meaningful research effort,” Ove adds. “The survey takes about 18 minutes and is completely anonymous. It’s important that we reach a good cross-section of the community, so whether they receive a call via cell phone or land line, I ask that residents take time to answer the survey questions.”

The survey is being conducted over the next few months by Management Decisions, an independent research firm. It focuses on issues such as access to health care, tobacco and alcohol use, diet, physical activity, cancer prevention, heart health, injury prevention, immunizations, communicable diseases, mental health and chronic disease. Similar surveys are being conducted at the same time across all 12 health departments in Milwaukee County, with support from Aurora Health Care, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Columbia St. Mary’s, Froedtert Health, and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare. The findings will be compared with the 2012 community health survey to analyze health trends over the last three years, and will help:

  • Document the community’s health status related to the health priorities established by the state health plan.
  • Identify local health behaviors or risk factors that present opportunities for health promotion and health care cost reduction.
  • Track the success of community health improvement activities.

To learn more, also check out our annual health report, which provides a terrific report on progress we’ve made in community health over the years, and our five-year community health improvement plan. Really good stuff.

The Scoop On South Milwaukee (Dog) Poop

With spring here (such as it is), the South Milwaukee Health Department is asking dog owners to pick up their pet’s fecal matter … and asking for patience to give them time to do it.

Check out the memo here from the city’s Facebook page. It states no complaints about dog waste removal will be taken until after April 30 … and lays out the penalties after that point.

Please clean up after your pets. On the campaign trail, I’ve too often seen (and stepped in) the results of not doing your doody.

They describe their impact in this press release. Check it out, and then take a few minutes to thank a community health professional this, and every, week. The services they provide are invaluable.

Help Wanted: Community Health Survey

About 400 South Milwaukee residents are being be asked to take part in a community health survey, our Health Department reports.

From the press release:

The South Milwaukee Health Department, Aurora Health Care, Froedtert Health, Children’s Hospital and Health System, Columbia St. Mary’s, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, and the Center for Urban Population Health Research are working in partnership to conduct a community health survey. The effort will supplement a prior community health assessment conducted three years earlier with updated data and the ability to analyze trends over time.

The survey will provide valuable data for continued evaluation of community needs and help guide government, not-for-profit, and volunteer organizations as they fashion services to meet the most pressing needs of the community. It will be conducted between now and mid -October.

About 400 area residents will be interviewed by telephone.

“I would encourage all residents of South Milwaukee to help us with this research,” said Jacqueline Ove, City of South Milwaukee Public Health Administrator, “If you are among those who receive a phone call, please take the time to answer the survey questions.”

Beating The Heat In South Milwaukee

With the heat advisory issued for Thursday – and the heat index expected to soar into the low 100s – please be careful as you head out. Stay cool.

Here are a few local notes on the heat …

  • The South Milwaukee Downtown Market will occur as scheduled, from 3 to 7 p.m., on Thursday. But we have cancelled the outdoor music.
  • The South Milwaukee Public Library and Grobschmidt Senior Center are cooling sites for South Milwaukee and are open to the general public in a health emergency. The library is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The senior center is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Those hours may be extended if necessary.
  • The Grobschmidt Pool is open from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 7 :30 p.m. Thursday.

Remember that the elderly, infants and young children, persons with chronic health problems and people on medication for mental health conditions are most susceptible to heat-related health effects. Please pay special attention to people who may be isolated or unable to recognize the effects of extreme heat.

Here are additional tips from the Milwaukee County Heat Task Force, of which South Milwaukee Health Administrator Jacqueline Ove is a member.

  • Stay out of the sun, avoid strenuous outdoor activities and seek cooling in buildings with AC.  Basements are also generally cooler than upper floor of buildings.
  • Showers, baths and cool rags can also provide relief.
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid beverages containing alcohol or caffeine (2-4 glasses per hour).
  • Wear loose-fitting light colored clothing.
  • Check frequently on elderly relatives and neighbors or those individuals homebound or isolated.
  • Do not leave young children or pets in cars for even a few minutes.

I’ll keep you posted when I get more updates.

Whooping Cough Update: Six Confirmed Cases In South Milwaukee … And Some Advice From The Health Department

The South Milwaukee Health Department is reporting six confirmed cases of whooping cough since March … and is urging parents to be vigilant about pertussis symptoms.

That number also continues to rise, along with numbers across the state, according to Public Health Administrator Jacqueline Ove.

Here is her message: If you suspect your child has whooping cough, take him or her to the doctor, and work to ensure that the doctor tests for the illness. If the test comes back positive, treat with antibiotics. Additionally, those in the ill person’s household and those who had close contact with him or her should also be treated with antibiotics.

Those with symptoms should also stay home from school or work.

Learn more about whooping cough symptoms in this note sent to South Milwaukee Middle School student families last week. One of the confirmed cases involves a middle school student.

Also, keep in mind that because we have children who attend our local schools and daycares from outside of South Milwaukee, all of the local cases may not live in the city. That requires a lot of coordination with other communities, as these large outbreaks do not know jurisdictional boundaries.

Our Health Department is up for the challenge. I’ll keep you posted.
