Tuesday Is Election Day: Vote!

The South Milwaukee mayoral primary is tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 18, and I ask that my readers get to the polls.

Of course, I humbly ask for your vote. But even if I’m not your guy, please cast a ballot. It’s our duty as citizens, an important part of what makes America America.

Here are some details …

  • Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • There is only one race on the ballot — the mayoral race. Here is a sample ballot. You’ll note I’m listed third; that’s the result of a random drawing done in January.
  • First District voters vote at Divine Mercy School, 695 College Ave.
  • Second District voters vote at Lakeview School, 711 Marion Ave.
  • Third District voters vote at City Hall, 2424 15th Ave.
  • Fourth District voters vote at Rawson Elementary, 1410 Rawson Ave.
  • Not sure what district you live in? Here is a map.

Mayor’s Race Update: Primary Set For Feb. 18

Update: Here is the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story.

It’s official — there will be a primary in the South Milwaukee mayoral race.

The Feb. 18 ballot will feature me, Tom Zepecki and Jim Leavens, with the top two finishers in that race advancing to the April 1 general election.

So mark your calendars and be sure to vote.

Of course, I humbly ask for your support.

It’s time for new ideas, perspective and energy around some of the key issues facing this city … and I look forward to delivering those. I pledge to continue to be a responsible steward of taxpayer money, while putting a fresh focus on redeveloping downtown, building local business, investing in community attractions, seeking efficiencies and enhancing communications.

With growing support across the city, my campaign has some really good momentum, and I look forward to continuing that into the spring. Join me! Check out my campaign website here. And please “like” my campaign Facebook page.

Also of note: The three South Milwaukee School Board positions up for election this spring will be uncontested. Only incumbents John Haslam, Patricia Bordak and Carol Dufek will be on the April 1 ballot, according to the district.

Second Write-In Candidate For South Milwaukee Mayor

A second South Milwaukeean is running as a write-in candidate for mayor.

Todd Lorino announced his candidacy this week and has a number of yard signs around town. He joins Michael Moeller as write-in candidates against incumbent Mayor Tom Zepecki, who is seeking a fourth term.

Lorino has launched a Facebook page about his candidacy. On it, he explains his reasons for running as this:

Why run for mayor? After attending many common council meetings, I became concerned about the lack of communication and collaboration. I decided that if I expectd changes, I would have to get involved in the process. The goals for our city are well defined in South Milwaukee’s 2020 Comprehensive Plan. These goals of having a strong business district, maintaining the parks and improving the schools are all ones with which we can agree. Reaching these goals given our current debt will be a challenge. We need to curb the TIF spending that puts the tax burden on the citizens to make up lost revenue.

Lorino has also been an outspoken critic of the Walmart development.

More On Moeller For Mayor (And Alderman)

Mayoral and aldermanic write-in candidate Michael Moeller has launched a campaign website. Check it out at www.michaelmoeller.org.

Moeller also put out a press release about his candidacy on Friday. See it here. From it:

Long-term South Milwaukee resident Mike Moeller has officially announced his intent to run as a write-in candidate for South Milwaukee’s upcoming regular election for Mayor and special election for 1st District Alderperson scheduled for April 3. This is a historical event in local politics to have both elections occurring at the same time and one man running for both positions.

“South Milwaukee is an ideal community, and my family and I are proud to call it home,” Moeller shares. “But we are missing out on key opportunities that can make our city stronger and move us in the right direction for a more promising future.”  He adds, “South Milwaukee must strengthen its name and have a clear direction as to where the city wants to be in the short and long-term. As the country and state works to pull out of the recession, we need to have a solid plan in place to attract new businesses and residents.”

Write-In Candidate Surfaces For Mayor, Alderman

Mayor Tom Zepecki will have write-in competition on April 3.

Michael Moeller is running as a write-in candidate for both mayor and First District alderman, he announced this week.

You’ll recall that Moeller ran unsuccessfully for the First District aldermanic seat in April of 2011, losing to Mike Karbowski and Craig Maass. Karbowski passed away later that summer and was replaced by Frank Van Dusen III. (Moeller also applied — and was ultimately not selected by the City Council — for that role.)

Van Dusen is already on the April 3 ballot to fill the one year remaining on Karbowski’s term.

Zepecki is seeking his fourth term and will still be the only name on the April 3 ballot for mayor.

I’ll keep you posted on this as the election draws nearer. Of course, I’d like to know what you think about this. Post your comments below!

Decision 2012: Little Competition In South Milwaukee

Uncontested races have become the norm in South Milwaukee in recent years — and that won’t change this April.

All candidates running for city office will run unopposed, as the 5 p.m. Tuesday deadline for prospective candidates to declare their intentions to run and submit the necessary signatures came and went with no challengers stepping up.

So here is who you will see on the April 3 ballot:

  • Mayor: Tom Zepecki
  • City Clerk: Jim Shelenske
  • City Treasurer: Karen Skowronski
  • City Attorney: Joseph Murphy
  • Municipal Judge: William Fenger
  • 1st District Alderman: Fran Van Dusen III

You’ll recall that Frank, appointed to his seat this summer to replace Mike Karbowski, must run for the seat and the chance to serve a one-year term. He will be up for re-election again with the rest of the aldermen in April of 2013.

The South Milwaukee School Board will see some competition in April, as incumbents David Maass and Kathleen Molus and challenger Sophia Williams vie for two seats. I will post more information on this race in coming days and weeks.

At the county level, Supervisor Pat Jursik, who represents South Milwaukee, is also running unopposed (as is County Executive Chris Abele).

Frankly, I’m surprised at the lack of competition at the city level, especially in the political climate were in — and given the rancor surrounding the Walmart debate last fall. There was so much anger over that issue — along with threats of ballot challenges and recalls — that I was certain that that votes taken by the council (and mayoral support) would lead to at least one candidate for mayor (and perhaps a couple of the other seats).

I was wrong.

In  a way, that’s disappointing. I think competition is a good thing. It makes everyone better.

Of course, I’d like to know what you think. Post your comments below!
