Extensive Water Damage Closes Salvatore’s/Papa Luigi’s II

Bad news for downtown South Milwaukee …

“Extensive water damage” has closed Salvatore’s/Papa Luigi’s II “until further notice,” according to the popular local business’ Facebook page.

This story on Fox 6 goes further — and says the restaurant, banquet and entertainment center might be closed for as long as three months, after sustaining up to $500,000 in damage. From it:

It was raining inside of his pizza place. That’s what the owner of Papa Luigi’s said happened on Thursday, January 9th. He saw it from his security cameras at home, rushed over to check it out, and was standing four inches of water.

The incident is another casualty of the bitter cold weather. A pipe burst in the sprinkler system, sending water virtually everywhere.

Papa Luigi’s is expected to be closed for one to three months. Insurance adjusters will be looking at the building Monday to check out the damage. For now, all parties and bowling leagues are cancelled.

I’ll keep you posted — and hopefully this terrific restaurant, banquet center and arcade will open soon. Sal has made a huge investment in this property, and it shows. In the meantime, please support Sal by visiting his Cudahy location.

Good luck, Sal!

Dangerous Cold: South Milwaukee Public Schools Closed On Monday

Update: Divine Mercy School is closed, too. So is Zion Lutheran. And the city is still picking up garbage on Monday, Jan. 6. Recycling, however, is not being picked up. Check out the city’s Facebook page for more.

South Milwaukee public schools will be closed on Monday, as the bitter cold sets in.

Here is the announcement from the South Milwaukee School District. I haven’t heard officially about local private schools.

The announcement came after Milwaukee Public Schools announced they would close — and news that Gov. Scott Walker was considering ordering a statewide school closure, similar to what’s happening in Minnesota.

The state has some tips in dealing with the cold weather here.

Dashing Into A Freezing Lake Michigan

The 2014 Polar Bear Dash is in the books, with more than 250 runners competing in a 5K run through Grant Park, followed by a plunge into a 36-degree Lake Michigan. About 50 actually took the plunge at the end — under the watchful eye of the South Milwaukee Fire Department, of course.

Here are more details on event. And thanks to South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter for the image.

Did you take part? How was it?

Merry Christmas, South Milwaukee

I hope the holiday finds you with family and friends … and with some of the same magic I see in the eyes of my son and daughter. This is a special time, and I vow to cherish every minute of it.

So I’ll be taking a few days off from blogging, barring a major breaking news event.

In the meantime, thanks for your continued support of this blog. And if you haven’t checked out my mayoral campaign site, or liked my mayoral Facebook page, please do. And tell your family, friends and neighbors.

Merry Christmas!

A Word On Our Workers

I just got off the phone with our Street Department, and confirmed that cleanup continues from yesterday’s storm.

So, please be patient, especially considering that many plow and salt drivers have been working off and on since the start of the ice storm almost four days ago. And more snow is predicted a couple days this week … Christmas week.

In fact, I ask for more than patience. I say thank you to these dedicated city workers.

Our street department workers who keep our roads clear no matter when the storm hits. Our police officers and firefighters who keep us safe, 24-7. Our water utility workers who fix mains whenever they break. And the list goes on.

It’s something to keep in mind when we’re probably off from work and gathered with our families in the coming days.

12 Days Of South Milwaukee Christmas: NASCAR Collectibles

IMG_3247

The Brooks house is a NASCAR house. Our favorite driver: Brad Keselowski, driver of the #2 Miller Lite Ford.

That’s why we’re really lucky to live in South Milwaukee, home of perhaps the only NASCAR collectibles store in the area.

Didn’t know about Green Flag Racing? You should stop by. It’s located at 1218 Milwaukee Ave., and it has some terrific gear for race fans of all ages.

Diecast cars, clothing, signs and more — this is the kind of stuff you can’t get at other stores, making this just the kind of destination retail business we should focus on attracting to this city.

People drive to South Milwaukee just to go to Green Flag Racing. We need more of that.

No One Hurt In Willowcrest Laundry Room Fire

This from the South Milwaukee Fire Department …

On Friday night at 23:26 (11:26 PM) the South Milwaukee Fire Department received a call for a fire at Willowcrest Nursing Home. On arrival we encountered an active fire in the laundry room. Firefighters from South Milwaukee advanced hose into the fire room and were able to extinguish the fire quickly. We utilized our mutual aid agreement (working still) with Oak Creek, Cudahy, Saint Francis and the 128th Air National Guard who assisted in moving nursing home patients to protected areas of the nursing home away from the fire. With the frigid weather, evacuation of patients (all of which have mobility issues) was not an option. Nursing home staff and the South Milwaukee Police were also active participants in the patient movement.

The fact that the facility is protected by a well maintained sprinkler system (which activated) is a major contributor to the success of this event. There was an active fire in the laundry room!!! The sprinkler system kept the fire isolated allowing us the window we needed to advance hose and extinguish the fire (which is labor intensive). Without the sprinkler system, combined with the aggressive action by our firefighters this fire would have been catastrophic.

The cause is still under investigation and the Fire Chief can update anyone interested when he returns.

At this time there are no injuries to firefighters or civilians to report.

Thanks again to our firefighters for putting their lives on the line every day to keep us safe … and thank God no one was hurt.

12 Days Of South Milwaukee Christmas: Performing Arts Center

I’ve written a lot about the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center, and for good reason — it’s a unique selling point for our city, an amenity that many communities our size can not boast.

And there are some great shows (Christmas gift opportunities) coming up, including the “Calmus: Christmas a Cappella” on Wednesday, Dec. 12, and a show by the Milwaukee Ballet II on Jan. 25.

Learn more and purchase tickets here.

And check out my 2012 12 Days post on the PAC here.

Council Roundup: Pit Bulls, Chickens And More

It was a busy agenda on Tuesday, in addition to passage of the 2014 budget, so here goes …

First, the Legislation and Permits Committee voted to reaffirm our bans on chickens and pit bulls in separate votes.

I voted to uphold both bans.

On chickens … I understand the arguments for allowing them, and find most of them quite valid, especially the desire to increase the amount of locally grown food and the positive health effects that brings. That is why I strongly considered voting to allow them with significant restrictions (permitting, etc.). But I couldn’t get past this question: “Would I want even one chicken living next to me?” The answer is, “No.” And, with that, I wouldn’t want to ask others to live next to one either. This would be a different story if we weren’t such a densely populated community, where many residents live mere feet from their next-door neighbor. And then there is the question of enforcement. How would we enforce this? Would we at all? My guess is, we wouldn’t. The proper (or improper) keeping of chickens would be a complaint-driven process, as so many of our ordinances are. We don’t need more of that.

On pit bulls … I wish we had more time to give this issue the debate it deserves. I did some homework before the meeting, and we heard from several people for 30-45 minutes during the meeting before a vote was called. I had to vote — and I cast my mine to uphold the ban first passed more than 20 years ago because of precedent. Simply, our pit bull and vicious dog ordinance seems to be working, and I trust in the people who passed it decades ago – and the city staff experts who think we should continue it. Our city attorney also raised a good question several times to various speakers: “How would rolling back the restrictions make South Milwaukee safer?” I thought that was a good way to frame the debate, and with two young kids at home, that argument really hit me. I couldn’t see how taking that action would indeed make us safer. Of course, I’m open to new ideas, new information and approach on all issues, and I suspect this issue will come up again. If and when it does, I hope we give it the full and deep debate it needs. There are good points on both sides of the debate over “breed-specific” dog ordinances.

Among other actions taken Tuesday night:

  • The L&P Committee also agreed to increase many paramedic fees by 4.2%, in line with the medical consumer price index increases over the past two years. (We did not increase these fees in 2013.) Select Health Department fees will also increase 5% in 2014, among other small increases.
  • The council also approved a license for a new bar, yet to be named, at what is now Moran’s, 912 Milwaukee Ave. It is expected to open in December.
  • And we agreed to move ahead with a concept to rebuild 11th Avenue, between Milwaukee and Michigan Avenues, repaving the street and adding more landscaping and other features to make the street more appealing. This work, if and when funding is approved, will be done early in the season in 2014 — and will require the South Milwaukee Downtown Market to relocate for several weeks. Stay tuned.
