South Milwaukee Fire Department Responds To Deadly Plane Crash

Two people were killed Saturday in a plane crash off of Cudahy in Lake Michigan, according to various reports. Check out coverage from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, WISN, TMJ4 and Fox 6.

And here is information from the South Milwaukee Fire Department on their response to the incident …

At approximately 5:25 this evening, the SMFD Rescue Boat, “Guardian II”, was requested by the US Coast Guard to assist in performing surface searches at the site of the reported plane crash in Lake Michigan off the shoreline of Cudahy.  The Guardian II responded and conducted surface searches for approximately 1-1½ hours.  After being released from that operation, the Milwaukee Fire Department, who was conducting underwater search and recovery operations, requested the use of the side and bottom scan sonar on the Guardian II to further search the crash site and debris field.  The SMFD rescue boat worked side-by-side with the Milwaukee Fire Boat “Trident” until approximately 8:50PM when operations were terminated due to darkness and the crash scene was turned over to the US Coast Guard.

The US Coast Guard and Milwaukee Fire Department will be returning to the site tomorrow for further operations and may be requesting our assistance again.

And South Milwaukee’s Heritage Days celebration is just getting started.

Thursday, it’s Evening on the Avenue. Friday through Sunday, it’s Lionsfest. Saturday, it’s the Heritage Days parade and the duck race.

My previous post has a full schedule. Hope to see you around the next few days!

(In fact, I’ll be walking the parade route handing out flyers promoting this blog. Say hi if you see me.)

Busy Year: South Milwaukee Fire Department Files Annual Report

The South Milwaukee Fire Department has published its 2012 annual report, and it does a great job  detailing all that the work this team does to keep us safe every day.

See it here. From it:

  • The department responded to 2,931 incidents in 2012, essentially static from previous years.
  • That includes responses to 2,494 emergency medical service calls, up slightly from the previous two years.
  • They also responded to 85 fires, the highest figure since at least 2009. Of those, 44 were building fires.
  • Fire dollar loss topped $541,000.

Of course, the report goes into much more detail and includes sections on equipment, training, youth education, incident photos and much more.

Thanks again to our South Milwaukee firefighters!

Donation Gives Pets Breath Of Life

A big thank-you to South Chicago Veterinary Clinic … filling a need that I honestly never gave much thought to until now.

Late last week, Dr. Frederick “Rick” Ruhl, of the South Chicago Veterinary Clinic in Oak Creek, generously replenished our supply of animal oxygen masks.  Dr. Ruhl originally donated two sets of these masks to our department, as well as the Oak Creek Fire Department, several years ago to use on animals suffering from respiratory distress.  As a result of his donations, emergency responders are now better equipped and more aware than ever of the importance of providing supplemental oxygen to animals that suffer from respiratory distress, especially when exposed to the smoke and fumes from fires.  SMFD recently used a mask to assist a dog at the fire we responded to a few weeks back on Blakewood Avenue.  In addition, this equipment allows emergency responders to support families in crisis by taking care of what is important to them – their pets. The focus of the fire department in supporting families that have suffered loss due to fire revolves around the Four P’s – People, Pets, Pictures (personal belongings), and Pills (prescriptions).  The peace of mind this gives pet owners is tremendous as pets are often considered one of the family and their loss can be devastating, especially when compounded by the damage and destruction resulting from a fire.

South Milwaukee House Fire Causes Extensive Damage To Kitchen

Details from South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter on the fire at 3410 Blakewood Ave. …

At 6:25 PM, South Milwaukee Police received a 9-1-1 report of a house fire at 3410 Blakewood Avenue. The caller reported there was smoke coming out of the rear patio door and the occupant was outside yelling for his dog to come out.  Upon the arrival of SMFD, a confirmed house fire was transmitted and the alarm was upgraded to a Working Still, bringing in our mutual aid neighbors. The sole occupant was encountered out of the structure and reported no other occupants.  Hoselines were stretched to the rear of the single-family structure and crews encountered a kitchen fire spreading to the cabinets and other furnishings in the immediate area.  A quick knockdown of the fire was made and the remainder of the house was searched to confirm that there were no occupants unaccounted for. No other occupants were found and overhaul was conducted to assure the fire did not spread into the void spaces and attic.  Extensive damage was done to the kitchen with moderate smoke damage to the rest of the house.  The lone occupant was evaluated by EMS for smoke inhalation, but declined treatment and transport. No further injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by SMFD.

Fire Damages Lake Drive Home In South Milwaukee

1212 Lake Drive - Exterior (1)Update: Check out coverage from WISN

Thankfully, no one was hurt in the fire Friday night 1212 Lake Drive in South Milwaukee.

South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter has more details …

At approximately 11:31 PM Friday evening, South Milwaukee Police Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call from the occupant of 1212 Lake Drive reporting a possible fire in the walls of her upstairs bathroom.  The occupant and her Grandson self-evacuated from the residence prior to arrival of SMFD.  Upon arrival of SMFD crews, heavy smoke was issuing from the front door of the dwelling so the level of alarm was immediately upgraded to a Working Still (equivalent to a first alarm assignment) and mutual aid companies from our neighboring communities responded with the exception of the St. Francis Fire Department who was not available due to a simultaneous call in their community.

Since reports were that all occupants of the structure had evacuated, crews deployed hoselines to the second floor and discovered fire burning through the wall and ceiling area of the bathroom.  A primary search of the building was conducted by the first arriving mutual aid company.  Upon attacking the fire and pulling more lath and plaster to check for fire extension, it was discovered that the fire had progressed considerably, to the extent that it had completely burned through several ceiling joists and wall studs.  Extensive overhaul was necessary and crews were rotated through to expose all areas of possible fire extension.  The fire was declared under control at approximately 12:14 AM.  The last apparatus cleared the scene at 2:23 AM.

Our Fire Investigator is currently on the scene attempting to determine the origin and cause of the fire.  Dollar loss is not available at this time, but damage was extensive to the second floor.  A great effort was put forth to cover furniture and other valuables on the first floor with plastic tarps to limit the amount of water damage.

During the fire, an Oak Creek Fire Department Paramedic Unit had to cover a call for chest pain at Southtowne Village Apartments since there were no SMFD personnel available.

Technology Used To Catch Boston Bombings Suspect Being Used In South Milwaukee, Too

Some interesting information from South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter …

I’m glad to see we are keeping up with the latest technology in our quest to save lives (and potentially capture terrorists).

Since the capture of the second Boston bombing suspect a few weeks ago, there has been a lot of media attention around the Forward Looking Infra Red (FLIR) Unit that was used by the helicopter to spot the suspect in the boat. More recently, the Milwaukee Police Department was spotlighted on the evening news demonstrating their FLIR Unit on the MPD Rescue Boat.

I thought I would let everyone know that SMFD, too, has a FLIR Unit on our rescue boat.  In fact, the unit was used last year to assist in locating the adult and two juveniles who were missing after dark from Bender Park on their personal watercraft.  At that incident, our boat was deployed after dark and located the group attempting to push their watercraft back to Bender Park after having run out of fuel. The three boaters were taken aboard our rescue boat and their watercraft was towed back to Bender Park. Had they not been located, the outcome would have predictably been quite worse considering the water temperature and where they were located.  In addition, only one of the three was wearing a flotation vest. …

This equipment, which was fully funded by an Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) Port Security Grant, has great potential, especially considering the weather conditions (fog, etc.) and darkness we may be called in to respond.

Our boat is currently being prepped for placement in it’s mooring spot at the SM Yacht Club.

Check out pictures here, here and here, including a screenshot that shows a human figure standing amidst the department’s training tower and vehicles.

Update: Boy Taken To Hospital In Downtown Apartment Fire

1231 Milwaukee Avenue - Exterior1231 Milwaukee Avenue - Apartment

A boy suffered burns to his fingers in Thursday afternoon’s apartment fire at 1231 Milwaukee Ave.

Here is the update from South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter …

At approximately 2:50PM, SMFD received a call from SMPD Dispatch of a cell phone call from the apartment building at 1231 Milwaukee Avenue reporting a fire in an apartment.  Upon arrival of SMFD units, SMPD officers were evacuating the residents and reported one juvenile male with burns to the fingertips of both hands.  This patient was treated at the scene and transported to St. Luke’s – South Shore Hospital by ambulance for further treatment.  SMFD units gained access to the 2nd floor and encountered heavy smoke conditions and a well-involved fire in one apartment, extending to the common hallway and attic area.  Extra assistance was immediately requested from our mutual aid partners and additional units arrived and were put to work. One apartment towards the rear of the building suffered extensive damage with heavy smoke damage to most of the second floor and minor water damage to the first floor apartment and business.  The fire was kept from extending into the attic.  The origin of the fire appears to be in the 2nd floor apartment with the cause still under investigation.  All of the occupants were accounted for and the Red Cross Disaster Team was on the scene providing them with assistance.  The Building Inspector was requested to the scene as overall damage to the 2nd floor is extensive.  No other injuries were reported.

Ready To Help: South Milwaukee’s (Limited, So Far) Role In Fighting The Big Burlington Fire

Just got this update from South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter …

I thought I would bring you up to date on Milwaukee County’s involvement at the ongoing fire at the Echo Food Processing Plant in Burlington.  First off, SMFD has not sent any apparatus to the scene.

At approximately 11:30 last night, I received a phone call from Deputy Chief Bill Rice of the Wauwatosa Fire Department in his role as the Southeast Wisconsin Regional Coordinator of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS).  Deputy Chief Rice responds to either the Command Post or Communications Center on all MABAS alarms over the 3rd alarm level.  As Vice-President of MABAS Division 107 (Milwaukee County), I was asked to begin efforts to coordinate the assembly and response of an Interdivisional Task Force (a combination of 3 fire engines, 2 ladder trucks, and two Fire Chiefs), to respond to the staging area in Burlington for a 6-hour operational period.  I contacted our MABAS Dispatcher, the Wauwatosa Police/Fire Dispatch Center, and, according to our MABAS Box Cards, requested engines from Greendale, Wauwatosa, and the North Shore, ladder trucks from Greenfield and West Allis and Chief Officers from Greenfield and the North Shore.  The Interdivisional Box Card also contains EMS units, which our paramedic unit would have been one of, but Burlington Fire decided that they did not need the EMS units. The Task Force units assembled at a pre-determined muster point at Oak Creek Fire station #3 and then responded to Burlington.  As of 6:30 this morning, some of those units were being released and were returning to their respective communities.

While monitoring our mutual aid radio channel throughout the night, I was contacted once again by Deputy Chief Rice who was requesting three more Chief Officers to serve on the Incident Management Team at the incident.  Chiefs from West Allis, Greendale and Hales Corners were called upon to respond.

As of this writing, most media outlets are reporting that this is an 8-alarm fire.  In reality, it is a 5-alarm fire with approximately 10 special alarms for Interdivisional requests for Task Forces as far west as Dane County and down into Illinois.  The fire is not yet under control and there will be much more work to be done.  I would not be surprised if our division is called upon again sometime today to provide more resources.

I’ll keep you posted if and when I hear more.

So, What Was That Smell?

If you smelled something like natural gas on Friday evening, you weren’t alone.

Check out this update from South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter …

At approximately 5:45 this evening, the police department received numerous reports of a strong odor similar to natural gas in the area of the 500 blk. of Marshall Avenue. The fire department responded and canvassed the neighborhood from Madison Avenue to the north, Columbia Avenue to the south, 5th Avenue to the East and 9th Avenue to the west and could not locate any positive source. Andy Bakalarski was contacted to determine if the odor could have been coming from the Wastewater Treatment Facility and reported that the probability was minimal. WE Energies Gas Operations was notified and had crews in the area, but could not locate anything either. We then rec’d subsequent calls from the area of Pick ‘n Save and Aldi’s and that area, including the Grant Park Square Apartments and associated buildings on Marion Avenue, was thoroughly investigated as well with nothing found. WE Energies remained in the area and was going visit each of the homes that called WE Energies directly and was asked to notify SMFD if they located the source. WE Energies did report that they received reports of the odor as far west as Howell Avenue in Oak Creek and had a crew in the area of 120 East Drexel.

I’ll keep you posted if I hear more.

Significant Damage: Garage Fire In South Milwaukee

Here is the update from South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter on the blaze early Saturday morning at 918 Marquette Ave. …

At approximately 3:56 AM this morning, South Milwaukee Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call from a tenant at 2315 10th Avenue (the office / condo building at 10th & Marquette) reporting a garage on fire to the rear of their building.  The actual location of the garage was to the rear of 918 Marquette Avenue.  When SMPD & SMFD units arrived, they encountered a well-involved detached garage with fire impinging on a vehicle parked adjacent to it.  Fire had already consumed the side entrance door, part of the overhead door and was venting through the roof.  In addition, the electrical service line supplying power to the residence at 916 Marquette had burned through and was lying in the alley behind the garage, limiting access to the scene.  Assistance was provided to SMFD by an engine company from Cudahy.

The fire was extinguished and is currently under investigation by SMFD. The owner of the property was notified and was present at the scene during fire department operations and the subsequent investigation.

Due to the structure having masonry side walls, the exterior of the building is still intact.  However, a majority of the roof structure and the contents of the garage are a total loss.  In addition, the vehicle parked next to the garage received significant heat/flame damage to the driver’s side.
