Rockets Season Ends With Loss To Waterford

For the second straight season, the South Milwaukee football team’s season ended with a postseason loss to Waterford.

The sixth-seeded Wolverines, down 14-0 at halftime, dominated the second half en route to a 21-14 victory over the third-seeded Rockets in the first round of the WIAA playoffs Friday night at Spaltholz Field. Here is a game summary.

While the end was disappointing, the Rockets had another strong season. South Milwaukee began the season 8-0 and took home its third straight Woodland Conference East title. The team scored some big wins — including a homecoming shutout of Cudahy and a Woodland crossover win at Pewaukee — and some terrific individual seasons, with quarterback Justin Oliden, running back Ian Pribyl and receiver Mitchell Dess putting up big numbers.

I already can’t wait for 2015!

Here is Racine Journal Times coverage of the game. TMJ4 also had a few highlights.

ROCKET FOOTBALL

The Rockets fell last Friday to Greendale 42-7 to go to 8-1 on the season. The Rockets showed they were right there with the Panthers through the first half of the game, but a couple of plays made the difference in the second half against the #1 ranked team in the state as the Panthers broke it open. With that loss the Rockets ended up earning the #3 seed in their D2 bracket and a home game this Friday at 7:00pm at Spaltholz Field against the #6 seed Waterford (6-3 regular season record). Please come out and support the Rockets in their first playoff game. There isn’t a team in Division 2 that they cannot beat! Let’s hear that support loud and strong on Friday!

Ready For Some Football? I Am

From South Milwaukee Athletic Director Ante Udovicic, who rightfully calls Thursday night’s game against Greendale “one of the biggest games in school history” …

THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL IN SOUTH MILWAUKEE

On Thursday, the 8-0 Rockets will be hosting the 8-0 Greendale Panthers in the Woodland Conference Championship game. The game will be broadcast on Time Warner Cable 32 (1332 in HD) with a 7:05pm kickoff, so for those within a 50 mile radius, set your DVR’s to record it and make sure to come on out to the game! You do not want to miss out on the event that this game will be. It is with no exaggeration when I say that this is one of the biggest games in school history!! We need everyone who can possibly come out and cheer the Rockets on! Let’s show the state how great our home field advantage is, how much spirit we have and how much support we have for our kids!

Unlike last year’s game when as visitors many of you were surprised to see higher ticket prices, we are not raising tickets prices!

So once again, come on out to Spalholtz Field and hopefully join the rest of the City of South Milwaukee in cheering on your Rockets to the Woodland Conference Championship.

OCTOBER 10 RECAP

The Rocket Football team traveled to Pewaukee on Friday night with a 7-0 record on the year. After lighting up the scoreboard, the Rockets left Pewaukee with an 8-0 record and a 56-41 victory!

While Pewaukee put up a lot of points, the defense stood strong when it needed to and if it weren’t for a couple of trick/fluke plays, I could argue that we could have won by 35 points. Joey Nelson (11) led the way with 14 tackles (and a 56 yard TD reception as well!). Mitchell Dess (12) had 6 passes defended and an interception. Chuks Ozodi (11) had 8 tackles and Calvin Shilling (12) and Robbie Fields (12) had 7 tackles each.

Justin Oliden (12) was on fire and was 15-21 for 397 yards (a school record) and 5 TD’s passing. He also had 15 carries for 50 yards and a TD rushing. 397 yards is almost certainly one of the top 5 biggest passing days in Woodland history as well. Justin now has 1521 yds passing, good enough for 20th best in the state. His 21 TD’s passing is good enough to tie for 9th in the state!

Ian Pribyl (12) had another monster game as well finishing with 30 carries for 175 yards and 2 TD’s raising his rushing total to 1214 yards on the season, good enough for 19th best in the state. His 19 TD’s rushing is good enough to tie for 11th best in the state as well.

Mitchell Dess (12) had one of the best receiving nights in STATE history. Mitchell had 10 receptions for 317 yards and 4 TD’s including a remarkable catch while essentially being hit and spun into a backflip in the back of the end zone. The 317 yards is good enough to rank 3rd all-time in WIAA Football history!!! Mitchell’s 928 yards receiving is 2nd best in the state! His 14 TD’s receiving is tied for the most in the state!!!

Eight Is Great: Rockets Roll To 8-0 With Offensive Explosion At Pewaukee

What a show.

South Milwaukee racked up 606 yards of offense — including some huge individual performances — on their way to a 56-41 victory over Pewaukee on Friday night.

The win moved the Rockets to 8-0, with a Woodland Conference showdown against undefeated Greendale looming Thursday night in South Milwaukee.

From the Lake Country Now story

Check out some of these fantasy football numbers.

By halftime, South Milwaukee senior quarterback Justin Oliden had 311 yards passing, including three touchdowns and one on the ground. He finished with five touchdowns and no interceptions, with the longest covering 88 yards to senior Mitchell Dess late in the second quarter. Dess was also off the charts with 10 receptions for 305 yards and four scores. One of his touchdown catches was remarkable, pulling in an 11-yard score from Oliden with defenders all over him in the middle of the end zone. Dess also had an interception on a fake punt by Pewaukee on their own 1-yard line in the fourth quarter.

The Rockets also sported a healthy running attack. Senior Ian Pribyl had 28 carries for 171 yards and two touchdowns.

“They’re strong, they’re good, but this one hurts a little bit right now,” said Justin Fritzke, Pewaukee’s head football coach. “Tonight, we just couldn’t get our defense off the field. We got behind a little bit and couldn’t afford to against a team of that caliber.”

Oliden finished with 386 yards passing and five touchdowns, giving him this stat line for the season: 83-of-123 passing for 1,521 yards, 21 touchdowns and just six interceptions.

Dess has 45 catches for 916 yards on the season and 14 touchdowns. Pribyl has 177 carries for 1,214 yards and 19 scores.

Pretty amazing numbers. And, from the looks of it, this team is just getting started.

Thursday’s kickoff is 7 p.m. at Spaltholz Field, before the team opens WIAA playoff play.  To get things started right for Thursday’s game, the school’s Future Career and Community Leaders of America chapter is planning a Color Run starting at 5 p.m. in the student parking lot. Check out the flyer here. See you there!

Note: WISN also has highlights of Friday’s game.

Taking A Cardboard Boat Ride … Across The Middle School Pool

A cool event (and program) from the school district … this sounds like fun.

Students from South Milwaukee High School’s new Technology & Engineering Academy will be conducting their first annual cardboard boat regatta on Monday, October 13.

While learning about engineering concepts, teams of three students are designing full-sized boats for two of them to actually row across the middle school pool and back.  The boats are built out of only cardboard, clear packing tape, and a little hot glue.  Their engineering success or failure will be evident when they enter the water for the first time.

Come cheer the students on beginning at 4:00 (doors open at 3:30).  We hope to see you there, and please bring family and friends!

Big Homecoming Win — And Another Conference Title — For South Milwaukee

Lucky 7-0 … and a third straight Woodland East Conference championship.

Not a bad Homecoming for the South Milwaukee football team, which rolled to a 42-0 victory over Cudahy on Friday at Spaltholz Field.

The offense continued to dominate, racking up 273 yards on the ground. Ian Pribyl ran 16 times for 152 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Justin Oliden had 11 carries for 124 yards and two scores, including a 72-yard second-quarter TD run. The Rocket defense held the Packers to 188 yards of total offense.

Now come two huge challenges for the Rockets — two Woodland West “crossover” games against powers Pewaukee and Greendale. First, it’s at Pewaukee this Friday at 7 p.m., and then South Milwaukee hosts Greendale on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m.

Then it’s WIAA playoff time. Bring it on!

Report Cards Out: South Milwaukee Schools Meet Expectations

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instructions is out with its 2013-14 school and school district report cards.

The verdict for South Milwaukee? The district as a whole solidly “meets expectations” with a score of 68.9.

As for individual schools …

  • Blakewood exceeds expectations, with a score of 74.5.
  • E.W. Luther meets expectations, with a score of 70.1
  • Rawson meets expectations, with a score of 68.1.
  • Lakeview meets expectations, with a score of 63.7.
  • South Milwaukee Middle School meets expectations, with a score of 67.9.
  • South Milwaukee High School meets expectations, with a score of 69.2.

You can search for report cards by district here. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Wisconsin State Journal offer some context.

Of course, the best context is what you see with your own eyes. And, as the parent of a Rawson first- and fourth-grader, I see a school (and school district) committed to first-class education.

We should all be proud of our South Milwaukee schools.
